View Full Version : I"m Not A "Cringe" Fan

I've never understood the appeal of "cringe humor" or even viewing disturbing images or videos. For example, there was a thread yesterday that apparently linked to a vid of a chick getting beaten by her dad. I have absolutely no desire to watch anything like that. I don't like watching clips of people getting seriously injured or killed either.

I also believe comedy has a line, and there are certain topics that make me uncomfortable when people joke about them. It's the main reason I've never listened to a complete Opie and Anthony show. I'm not saying people don't have the right to make such jokes or view such material, and I'm not judging anyone who enjoys those types of things. I'm merely stating my stance that I simply cannot fathom the somewhat morbid curiosity and taste of others.

I can take a little cringe humor. Like the last time Gail-O was in studio. It was pretty bad to laugh at a mentally ill woman, but I did anyway.

But I have no interest in gross out stuff. I googled "smashed" for the att.whore/spam thread and got an image of a guy with a smashed head. I clicked off instantly.

When O&A were talking about the 55 gal. drum thing I just switched to music for a while. I didn't get sick by what they were talking about, I just think that stuff is boring.

The joke isn't about the grossness or watching the stuff, it's about crossing boundaries in an unexpected way. No one is looking at a video of a girl getting beat and laughing at that (well, not anyone in his right mind).
I didn't think anyone was laughing at disturbing images or videos. I was questioning why they would want to look at them at all.

I'm not a fan of the title "cringe humor."

Funny is funny, regardless of whether or not it is cutting edge, or uncomfortable. I've always felt that by adding "cringe" to title gives the performer permission not to be funny, as long as it is perceived to be shocking or unconventional. Mostly it's hack and lazy.

I agree that people have the right to listen to any kind of comedy they want... but some things are just not in good taste. I think allot of people don't have the courage to think for themselves and just go along with things because it's what's cool. That's why I listen to O&A in small doses and don't get Jimmy's humor at all. But there are allot of sheep who will listen to O&A and Jimmy hear cringe humor that's not funny and just go with it... that's just my own independent opinion.

I guess I just have a "well unless it's me, it's funny" attitude.
Shit most of the time even when it is me.
