I've moved a few times in my life, but never completely by myself. There was always family invovled and I always knew when and where I was going. This time around.. things are a little more dubious and I've got no one to count on but myself. Does anyone have any kind of advice for a drastic move across the country? I could use all the help I can get.

(And why the fuck are U-Hauls so friggin expensive? Uuugh.)

U-Hauls are expensive one way. In town they're pretty reasonable.

My ultimate goal in life is to own only as much stuff as I can pack and move in one day. I'm sick of useless shit lying around and collecting dust. The only things I really want to drag with me to Arizona (aside from my bare essentials) is a couple pieces of furniture, my tv, home theater system, and computer. I would love to bring my books, but I don't think I'm going to have enough room for all of them. ::sob::

And U-Haul should be shut down. They quoted me for approximately 3 G's!
Try renting a mini van one way from Hertz or the others. My g/f did that, she was luck enough to get onein NY that came from Ca were she was going. I dont remeber the price, but know where near Uhaul that's for sure.

Have a great and safe trip!

Also, when she was comparing the cars, she got the Nissan Quest. With the seat folded, it had the most cargo space. Trust me, she took alot of shit with her.

Well, here's my question: are you moving FOR yourself, or are you moving for a
dude? The reason that I ask is, if you're moving for yourself, then go for it, feel
great about it, and make the best of it. At some point, you have to go out and
make your own way in the world.

BUT, if you're moving for a dude, don't do it. Phoenix is really far away, and kinda
white-trash-ville. In other words, if you're doing it for yourself, then you'll find a
way for Phoenix to work for you. If you're doing it for a dude, you'll hate Phoenix..

When making a big move like yours...it's worth checking out moving companies. They can schedule you as part of a larger move. They charge by weight and you only pay for your part.

I moved from Florida to Los Angeles, and then from Los Angeles to Dallas in the past six months (all for work/promotions) by myself to both places.

It cost around $2200 to have a single bedroom apt moved from Florida to LA - with the movers doing all the lifting (I packed). I suguest using Allied Van Lines - they may seem more expensive, but there is NO bs with them. Moving companies are the BIGGEST crooks in the US now, so if you use one, saving a couple bucks on an unknown company is insane.

Good luck with the move, its stressful but it is a lot of fun too. And dont be worried, you will meet people no problem. If youre moving into an apartment complex, try to go somewhere with an activity group. Its usually cheesy but you will definately meet people through it.

I had suggested this to her last night, but I'll put it out there publically - with all the prices they are quoting, and this is a single woman moving, it might be cheaper just to take clothes and necessities, and re-buy at Ikea and Target once you're out there.

You can really get all you need for less than 2500 at IKEA and Target. Even less, depending on how fancy you want to go.

I had a friend once that worked at a gas station/towing company. He told me over and over that they rented Ryder trucks and towed U-Hauls. I've always rented from UHaul for locals and the trucks have never left me on the side of the road -- even though they are running on 7 out of 8 cylinders and not all the parts are usually there. I rented a 15' Ryder to go from MS to NJ about 8 years ago and it was around 900 dollars. Good solid truck with only 10K miles on it. All in all a worry-free move.

THe minivan idea is the best so far though. You can fit tons of shit in a regular work-van and you can rent those from UHaul too. I can't imagine how much gas would be cross country in a full sized U- Haul........
