View Full Version : New Terrorist Attack in Madrid?

CNN just reported that there was a 'strong explosion' in Madrid's airport, and the authorities claim it was a 'car bomb'. So far there have been no confirmed deaths, and there was evidently a warning to police before the bomb went off, but the story is still unfolding so more on this as it develops. Can't find anything about it on the internet still, so I'll post a link when it shows up.

The Euskadi declared a cease fire back in March and were trying more diplomatic tactics to achieve their state aim of an independent homeland. I wonder if a rebel faction has not broken off from the main group, tired of the talk-tactics and hungry for attention.

Being from Spain I can say this pretty much sucks. Prior to the cease-fire things had gotten pretty troublesome. I usually visit every summer and it is incredibly disgusting the levels they will go to. They have actually buried bombs on crowded beaches.

I will, however, say this about ETA. Their intention is usually not to harm the largest number of people possible as is the case with Middle- Eastern terrorism, but simply to garner attention to their cause. Thus the phone calls in advance.

Davios.... Whats the back story of all of this? What are they fighting for?? Is it governmental or a cause?

They learned from the Madrd bombings that a terrorist act causes the people to capitulate. Shortly after the original bombings the Leftist govt was elected

This has been going on since I was born, it really isn't anything new. There was a ceasefire declared not long ago so in that sense it is very important, but there is no correlation to the bombings in Madrid or Zapatero the new Prime Minister of Spain.

As was mentioned earlier, ETA is basically a Basque seperatist organization which is looking to become an independant nation from Spain. The Basque region is in the South of Spain, they travel regularly in and out of France in order to evade authorities. It is incredibly complicated situation, they have their own dialect of Spanish which essentially gives them their own language, and they have their own culture which they feel seperates them from the rest of Spain. It is a feeling which does not JUST exist in the Basque territory. There is also a region right above Portugal called Galicia, which also has its own language which is more or less a mixture of Portuguese and Spanish. They don't have any organizations dedicated to seperating themselves from Spain but the feelings are also their in alot of ways. When the Prestige tanker had an oil spill it was entirely in Galicia. This is an area where a LARGE majority of people live off the sea, everything from work to food is to a great deal dependant on it. Following the spill, a large segment of people harbored incredible ill will towards the rest of Spain because they felt like their own home suffered at the expense of the rest of the country.

Galicia is nothing like the Basque region however. ETA has done some pretty gruesome things from the murder of police officers, to politicans, to judges, to journalists. I believe I was there in the summer of 2000 when they kidnapped a reporter and held him hostage and tortured him all summer. They would release snippets of video to the news stations including at one point when they cut off his ear. They eventually killed the guy. They are quite simply vile and disgusting human beings.

However, if the bombings in Madrid had never even occured the elections would have gone the same way. All of Spain was against any involvement in Iraq and when Aznar actually involved Spain in the plans any support he had quickly faded.
