I was just at Circuit City looking around and stopped by the Satellite Radio stand. I was just curious and wanted to look at the new receivers. I was impressed by Sirius' new units. They are much smaller and better looking than their old ones. But then I saw their new portable. It looks OK, the screen is very nice but the thing might literally be twice the size of the Inno/Helix.

Then I passed by the XM side and something crossed my eye. The Nexus 25 was listed with a price of $ -.05. Negative five cents. I look closer and see that it costs $79.95 but it has $80 worth of mail-in rebates. Hence, negative 5 cents.

Caveats: The people at the store had no idea about the mail-in rebates. There are 2, one for $30 and one for $50. As I suspected the $50 one is supposed to be only for new subcribers. However, it doesn't say that anywhere on the form Circuit City gave me so I am going to try and send that one in anyway. Two, with tax it came to about $85 so you will have to spend $5.

But if you aren't a subscriber this is a good deal. It expires February 1st.

If you don't know what the Nexus is it's a unit from Samsung that is also an MP3 player. It's not a portable live receiver, meaning it must be in it's dock to listen to a live signal. But you can schedule recordings and listen to the recordings portably, and you can play your MP3s in it, and you can save individual songs. So if you're interestedin that.....

Although I have mailed in various receipts with rebate info on computers, printers, cameras etc. from Circuit city I have yet to ever receive a rebate check. I mean not even once. I just don't believe they are real.

Are you sure there wasn't two seperate rebates? All Holiday season my store (A CC competitor) had a $50 rebate on the Nexus 50 and a $30 rebate on the car kit. Plus right before New Years you got a Nexus 50 with a Samsung TV.

One is for $30 which I have to send to CC and the other goes straight to XM.

I think it's also a bad sign for XM when there is a price tag which tells you you will get 5 cents for taking this and the shelf is still stocked full. I was the first one who took one.

Ah, we did that one too for black friday, before you worry too much about XM I have absolutely NO XM units in stock and stacks of Sirius units with giant $100 Nascar themed rebate signs everywhere.

My Nexus, that I bought last month had a $50 rebate. It said in the add that it was for new subscribers, but when I got it, you didn't have to be new. It also came with a $30 XM gift card good toward your bill. That totalled $80.

3 days before Christmas I found a great deal at Crutchfield.com for my wife - Nexus 25 with a $50 Rebate + $30 XM giftcard and FREE overnight UPS shipping. It was at my door 16 hours after I ordered it and with the rebates, it cost me less than $10! She's happy (and thinks I spent a lot more than I did!)

Best features are 25 hours of digital recording for XM or also as an MP3 player...the downside is it has to be docked to receive XM programming (no portability) and it has a simply B&W display but for the price there's no cheaper way to get into XM - aside from the subscription cost!:-)

That's the exact same deal I got. I got mine from Crutchfield, too. Let me ask you a question, though. Have you used it to do a timed recording of Ron & Fez? When I do it with my Myfi, I have no problem. With the Nexus, it records the show fine. The problem is, it doesn't split up the segments with the PAD data right. It splits up the commercials, but each segment of the show gets lumped into one big section without the PAD data.

Haven't tried it on her Nexus but I'll give it a shot now that the boys are back live and I'll let you know...

I'm recording tomorrow for the first time too and I'll see if I have the same issues.

Finally!!! I have some people to ask about this. Please let me know what you come up with.

BTW... I've been recording the FM show on my comp and putting it on the mp3 part of the Nexus. I don't subscribe to Napster, but I use the Napster program to edit the show details, then transfer them to the Nexus. It works great. Let me know if you want to do this, and have any questions.

I'm thinking about picking up the Nexus 25 at Circuit City or the Nexus 50 at Best Buy. The 25 is allegedly free after rebates and the 50 is $50 after rebates. Any word on whether us old subscribers actually get the rebate? I'll probably just shell out the $50 for the extra memory that the Nexus 50 has.

Am I missing any great deals on Helix, Inno or Myfi? I already have a SkyFi2 for my live listening needs, so I just want something portable whether it gets live broadcast or not.

I won't be able to tell with 100% certainty that the rebates came through for a while. All I can say is that on the form Circuit City gave me for the $50 rebate from XM is that it was never mentioned anywhere about whether or not it was for new subcribers just that the radio must be activated and remain so for 180 days.

Oh yeah, and I also have the same issues as Papabear. Records fine but the show segements are in one chunk and the pad data doesn't change.

The Nexus is a nickel here is SC too. But the F'ing car kit is $72 and it does not include the antenna connector. I was going to return the $59 "express" I bought my wife till i realized it did not have the antenna adaptor in the car kit. That makes a huge difference if you are modulating. Will it do MP3 files?

It's good. It's not blowing my mind or anything but it does what it is supposed to, does it well and is easy to use. I was also surprised by how small it is. Recording songs are easy. A couple of button clicks on the unit itself or one button on the remote. The pics I saw of it made it seem bigger than it is. It's quite small and light.

If you don't need live reception and don't care about a color screen it pretty much is the Inno/Helix.

Or you could dedicate the whole thing to XM content.

I know the inno I have is really still a "test" version/

We need to attack Wicki to get on Samsung's Ass to give us a fix for that shit.

Yeah, the Nexus (25) does not show the pad data. It's weird because wouldn't the pad data be the same as a song changing on a music channel? I bought the Nexus for my wife - I'm sticking with the Myfi (because I have multiple car kits for it). I had one crap out and bought a barely used COMPLETE Myfi set on Ebay for $60. Kept the radio and sold all the accessories for more than I paid for original auction - SWEET!!

I also bought the nexus through amazon (from Crutchfield) at the same time. That made them both eligible for free shipping. Once the rebate comes, that means I ended up getting the nexus AND the car kit for a total of 6o bucks.

BTW... I mailed the rebate about two weeks ago, and I just got an email that said it would hit the mail by the 30th of Jan. Not too bad of a turnaround for a rebate.

I got a nice surprise today. The XM rebate -which 1. I wasn't 100% sure I qualified for and 2. even if I did qualify for wasn't expecting for a long time due to horror stories I've heard from people who had previously waited for XM rebates- came today. Free Nexus rules.

I was shocked to actually get the email, so I am hopeful to get the rebate as well. $40 nexus 50 will rule, I hope.

opened one of those tear-the-ends-off envelopes from xm to discover a rebate check for $50! hooray! thanks xm for an almost free nexus (that i bought in december and sent the rebate stuff in next day)
