View Full Version : My Mom Can't Cook

My whole life my mother never cooked. It was always Roast Beef, no sides. Hamburger, no bun. Chicken, no seasoning. I still managed to be a fat child, preteen, teen and now adult. I hear stories of people with food and tradition in their lives and it makes me sad. Does anyone else share this lousiness or do all your moms cook nice dinners with sides and plenty of happiness to spare?

I'm sorry to hear this lleeder. Growing up my mother cooked decent dinners. This wasn't every night but it was often enough to leave decent memories. Now that her children are grown, the kitchen might as well be roped off.

Why do I get this uncomfortable feeling you probably smell like boiled chicken?

There are certain dishes that my mom really excels at, and others where she comes up a little short. Her Italian food will never be anywhere near as good as my grandmother's, but she's great with "American" food.

Mom's Thanksgiving meal is the best I've ever had, and when she lived closer she'd always make a turkey dinner with all the trimmings on my birthday.

The more I think about it the more I realize my mom was like Rachel Ray in her own right. Cooked quick yummy nutritious meals but couldn't bake if her life depended on it. Although I give my mother an extra point cause she had a helluva smaller budget to work with than Rachel. Give her one bay leaf and she'd whip up beef stew and dumplings.

i'm right there with you lleeder. i think growing up with a mom that couldn't cook allowed, or forced, me to learn how to cook. now i'm a damn good cook and i owe it all to my mom.

My mother was and is generally a good cook and likes to experiment at times, but it is usually the classics that come out the best. Dinners were pretty varied, though certain nights were reserved for certain types of food (dairy, chicken, etc.) The worst is when some report comes out touting the benefits of some particular food, because then she would try to incorporate into every meal. There was the ginger period in which everything had huge amounts of fresh ginger in it or on it. Same thing for garlic. I still can't eat ginger to this day.

My mother used to be a very good cook but when I was about 13 she started to slip into dementia and she lost her ability to cook. I remember when I was young she used to make me pancakes for dinner every Friday. She would also make chicken pamesan (my favorite) for my birthday every year. She also made a mean meatloaf. I really miss her cooking. A positive though was that it forced me to learn how to cook at an early age.

My mom cooks very well, my wife cooks like shit. Whenever we go to my parents place she goes all out and feeds myself, my wife and my kids like royalty. I feel kind of shitty, like I don't feed my kids well enough so she has to undertake this task of getting nutrients into our bodies.

My sister! My fucking sister cooks like a maniac! Literally. She can cook some of the greatest meals but it's all ruined cause she cooks with a liter/ gallon of oil for something as 'pregreased' as ground beef... Could explain her 5'5 400 lb stature.

Come to think of it, the only thing my mom ever made me that stunk was when I was in school. She would make me lunch and when she made ham sammiches she would drown it in butter. I would try to choke it down everytime but ended up wanting to throw up. To this day I cannot eat ham sandwiches of any kind.

My mom used to cook better than she does now. Or maybe I didnt have experience when I was younger?
When I was a kid and would go over a relatives house for a party, and they would cook certain things, I wouldnt like it because I was used to my moms style of cooking. Now that Im older and married, I am used to my wifes way of cooking and I prefer her style now to my moms.

My Dad's Mother is 100% Italian and she IS A HORRIBLE COOK. I've never felt more Catholic guilt then i would on the days she's bring food over and i'd refuse to eat it.

My Mother's Mother was Norwegian & French, she knew how to cook some Italian but only because her husband had taught her.

My Mom was a bangin' cook growing up, she was always in the kitchen making something. I still quite don't know how she learned to cook Italian food so well given the situation but holy hell it was amaz'n.

My mom is one helluva cook. I picked this up from her including the recipe creation and improvisation skills. I'm now working on passing this on to my wife... she's a good cook, but she can only follow a recipe... she's just starting to grasp changing it up to make it her own.

I forgot how much of a great cook my mom and dad really are. Now, since i only go home for the holidays, i really see how good their food is and i look forward to those big family dinners with way too much food to it.

they eat like animals too, whereas we are a generastion that at least is more aware of how bad most food is for us. (my mom thinks cheese is good for you because there is calcium in ii, wacko) but when i go home it is everything soaked in butter, and onions, and cheese, and sauses. so freaking good. these are all the things i never eat normall.

My mum was an okay cook. She did the basics but for the holidays (Thanksgiving, Xmas and New Year's) it was lasagna. As the kids got older we helped with the lasagna prep.

My mother is Irish but my father's mother was stright off the boat from Italy. When I was a litle kid we would go over her house every Sunday for dinner. She would make manicotti and her sister would make lasagna and we couldn't leave the table until we were done. Good times.

My mother is very similar to GVac's in that some dishes turn out not-so-great, and others, I would refuse them from any other source than my mom, because they are that good.

Her pot roast is phenomenal. The leftovers are the best, because the gravy seeps into the potatoes and reheating it makes a weird firm-mashed-potato-gravy deal.

Family recipe banana bread, which both my future wife, future brother in law, and famous radio hosts can attest to.

She makes this basic chili - which is very, very basic - but it's simplicity (and the fact you can taste the spices rather than assaulting you with hot flavor) it incredible.

I could go on.
