Les Miserables rocks! There, I said it. I'm not usually a fan of the musical theater but I've enjoyed this show since my wife and I saw it while we were dating, during its original Broadway run. I have the orginal cast album in the car and I'll occassionally blast it when I'm feeling blah and it picks me right up. At my request, my wife is going to try to get us tickets for my birthday.

While playing it in the car today, I thought about the Guilty Pleasure T.V. Show thread. I realized that I'd never let my friends know about this obsession. But I figured "What the hell" I'll let you guys know since I'll probably never meet any of you in person. Let the gay jokes fly.

I noticed that it's back on Broadway after it's big deal "going away forever" thing that happened a few years ago.

Is the new one worth seeing?

Judge, when you do finally come out of the closet, I will accept you regardless.

with that said, in 1998 i saw Jeckel & Hyde on Broadway. i loved it so much that i purchased the soundtrack and would play it over and over again. the one part where he is singing as both Jeckel & Hyde while they are fighting for control of his body is like nothing i have ever heard before or since.

I saw 'A Chorus Line' when I was about 14 or so. It was so fucking horrible and boring I left during the performance to go stand in the bathroom. Standing in an empty bathroom was more entertaining then that drivel. I FUCKING HATE THEATER!!! Singing about everything is fucking gay. It's just fucking awful, awful bullshit.

I would never see another play again, ever. I don't even like singing in movies or cartoons. For example, I can't watch those episodes of The Simpsons where they sing everything and then play clips of songs. They make my fucking skin crawl.

I agree with you. Les Mis was the very first show I saw on Broadway, and the next day I went out and bought the soundtrack. It is still my favorite musical that I have seen, and also play the soundtrack every now and then.

Big fan of "Les Miz" - seen it on broadway, and twice when it came through D.C. (about 12 years between performances, mind you). I wouldn't say I'm a big musical fan, although I got drug to plenty growing up as a kid, and saw a ton when I worked at the Kennedy Center (I really think"Phantom of the Opera" is over-rated, which played ad-nausium during my time at the KenCen, but it was cool to go under the stage and watch him drop through the trap during the second act during the Wed. matinees). It's a toss-up with me between Miz and "West Side Story" as to my favorite, tho.

Thanks to everyone who's with me on this. And here I thought I was some kind of a half a fag or something. I can honestly say that I have absolutely never enjoyed any other musical but for some reason this show really touches a chord with me.

EDIT: I just thought of another semi-musical I like: the original Willy Wonka.

I've gone to several off and off-off B'way performances but the only major musical I ever saw was Phantom of The Opera. It was so hokey and cheezy i got douche chills.

I went to the opera at Lincoln Center once and saw Bizet's Carmen. It was a very cool rendition. It was set in the 1940s. The costumes were magnificent.

As well you should, good sir!

Les Miz is a well written, finely scored piece of theatrical history. I saw it a few times when it was first sent to Broadway and the cast was incredible. They did go through a few casting revisions and at one point the producers had cleaned out the entire cast because they were doing so horribly, but as long as the new cast is working the characters to their potential, I am sure it will be just as good as the first. Admittedly, it is a bit on the long side, so it is definitely not for everyone.

Congratulations on finding a bit of culture and for being bold enough to share it on this board!

And yes, I am completely and utterly as gay as they come... figuratively speaking, of course. ;)

i've seen a few of late ...

les mis was a little over the top

boy from oz wolverine killed as peter allen

avenue q was better than i thought it would be -- a kind of slacker / lower east side 'sesame street'

spamalot was great, a wonderful send up of all things broadway and python

drowsy chaperon was really good -- a more sincere parody of broadway shows, and a valentine to the theatre culture told in a very cool way

Not many teams write songs with sexual innuendo better than Boublil and Shoenberg. Their "dirty minds" song in The Pirate Queen was pretty funny, too. Not that I'd recommend PQ, though, it kind of chugged along. Which is sad because it was a great story, just poorly executed.
They come close to Gilbert & Sullivan, among others.

My parents took me to see Les Mis at the Kennedy Center in the 80s. What really sucked was, halfway through the performance the rotating stage broke down. Everything came to a screeching halt. They finally fixed it and finished the performance. Can't say I enjoyed the experience at the time. As far as musicals go, I'll always dig on West Side Story, but that's about it.

Reeph and I went to see Les Mis on Saturday. No words can describe the experience. It was amazing. It's a shame it is now gone, If I could I would watch it every single day.
We had the pleasure of seeing John Owen-Jones as Jean Valjean.
The sets were amazing amazing.
