Suppose someone gives up smoking for Lent, aren't they much more likely to continue giving it up after 40 days?Just because you don't believe in it doesn't make it pointless or hypocritical. I could be wrong, but I think it is more for the individual, to remind him/her of Jesus' sacrifice, rather than to "appease God." If you happen not to believe in Jesus, at least look at it in a non-spiritual realm and see that it's not a bad thing.

since Sheepy started this thread to be curious and to make conversation, i will add my two cents:from what i remeber from CCD  classes giving up something for LENT was supposed to make you a better person.  Not just for the temp. sacrafic but you were supposed to give up a bad habit and it would stick.  Next year the same thing.  making you a better person hence cleansing yourr soul before you went to heaven.  I do it for me, not for God, whom i do believe in but to make myself a better person on the inside.  thats it.  poke fun all you want. I am giving up biting my nails.  only problem is that it is one of the only things i have left.  Junk Food, Beer, binge eating are all gone already.  one year i did give up jerkin off in the shower was my meserable.

I think the "giving up" idea is to show a sacrifice during the Lenten season.  I. however, believe that I will be a better person if I do something EXTRA during Lent so I try to donate more to charities or to people who are in need.

Not that anyone cares, but I've decided to give up self-pity and self-loathing for Lent. I don't do it too much but it just annoys me when I do. And it can be a crutch at times.
