How did Mike get so eloquent? It's really a talent to be able to discuss things so clearly.
Eloquent? That's generous; the long delay = I heard the last minute of the call; my regular speaking voice is about 5 octaves lower then the voice you heard. I've done radio and taught for a decade each, and still my voice goes up in fright when I talk on radio. Ack.

Thanks though, and FYI, I recently finished a book about the subject, called The Science of Good and Evil, by Michael Shermer; super highly recommended, it asks why people lie cheat and steal but also asks why we are good, meaning, where does our moral foundation come from? Shermer argues it's not from a God [or Devil] but that, in short, acting good a la The Golden Rule is an evolutionary strategy that works most of the time, and that people who do very very very bad things do so because of something other then some force/energy/?? we might call Evil.

I honestly think we're all capable of some pretty friggin depraved things, given a weird/rare enough circumstance; certainly we all have the capacity to kill, if nothing else for self-preservation, imo.

As for the Hitlers/Stalins/Vlad The Imaplers/Pol Pots/Radio Salesmen, I'd say it's more psychoses and delusions combined with misuse of power and fear then some force out there pulling us to the dark side.

i loved shermer's book, why people believe weird things, so i'd definitely be willing to give this one a shot.
