hey everyone, it seems that many people act like a true community here so i thought i would throw out a question to all of you. I recently got accepted to go to China to teach Americanized english, but if i go, i would be leaving in early to mid May and not be back til the end of summer. also, if i go, i would have to leave my job that is paying great money, which is going to school, and if i left, i would come back at a lower job and reduced pay. so, what do any of you think i should do?

1. How Old Are You?
2. What Is Your Current Job?
3. What Do You Want To Do For A CAREER, Ie, What Do You Want To Be Doing 5 Years From Now?

Please Answer, Then We Can Give Some Good Advice.

personally, i say go.

how many more times in your life are you going to be offered a job to teach in china. yeah, for a few years you might not make so much. but life isn't about making much, its about making the most in your life. if you have chance to go overseas to to this take it, cause it won't come around in the future.

I agree with Weeka budday... its a chance of a lifetime. It might appear to be a step backward at first but in the long run it might bring you further in life
Money isnt everything.
This is one of the regrets of my life is turning down traveling and seeing other contries on the company dime.
Go to China and report back to us all the cool stories...bring back pictures.

Unless you really like the job you are in now, and are especially reliant upon the income, I say it sounds like it's too good an opportunity to pass up.

If you leave the United States they'll cut your fucking head off!

That's what I was told anyway and it worked out pretty well for me. (http://www.ronfez.net/forums/showthread.php?t=43171&highlight=arabia)

If you're qualified to teach you can work just about aywhere in the world and sustain yourself as long as you want. There are some places that pay shitloads: Saudi Arabia, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Dubai, some Eastern Union states, rich Gulf states. Buddy of mine was making 100k/yr in Saudi.

China has got to be a huge market for English teachers. I've only heard of some Peace Corps teachers and they descibed the small city they were working in as really freaky. Beijing would be much more normal and probably well-paying.

Everywhere in the world prefers Americans, then comes Britain and everybody else. You're in demand.

Depends...how much do you like Orange Chicken? I'd say thats Question #1.

Maybe this is something you haven't thought about. 5-10 years from now you're going to hate that job you're in. You'll be driving to that same office day after day, doing the same things day after day with no real changes, sure maybe one day the fax machine breaks...but someone fixes it, they always do.

Or you could take advantage of this amazing oppertunity, spend a few months in China and do something people in their 40's and 50's dream of doing. (and by that I mean having sex with some hot chinese chick).

Good luck!

It sounds like a great opportunity. Does the teaching gig offer experience that will be beneficial in your career? If so, look at the lower pay upon your return as an investment. I'm sure it (the lesser job) would be very temporary anyway.

no, it wouldnt help push my "career" further, since i work part time as a librarian. but i would also say that it wouldnt help that much with my major - communications.

i have decided, with the help from this great board and private messaging, that i will be going to Shanghai, China! I just wanted to say thank you all for your support, and i will try to keep up with R & F while i am gone. praise the all-mighty Ron!
