My next store neighbors moved out and today some new people are moving in. I saw the husband, I assume ,moving in his stuff with his older father. I passed by them twice going to my car. I said not one word to them. My last neighbors lived next store for 5 years or so. I never said goodbye. I can only meet people over this thing or with alcohol.

What you need to do, is give them some kind of welcoming gift, like a center piece or something.

I'm having a similar problem with my neighbors who moved in four or five months ago. I see them and their kids all the time, I never say a word to them and I don't even wave. I feel like such a ghoul not waving to them, but I assume they'll think I'm some asshole if I say hello.
I'm not even that antisocial once I get to know ya...but it's getting to know someone in the first place that I suck at.

Take it from a modern day hermit, what you're doing isn't even in the shade of being antisocial.

I understand where you're coming from. I'm kind of like that. For some reason, when I'm at work or going to class i can seem social, but to go out and socialize totally different story. I think maybe i just subconsciously hate people.

What do you think you're "supposed" to do? Bake them a cake? What, is this 1958?

im the same way, i dont normally initiate a convo or approach someone unless i am very comfortable with them no matter what setting i am in whether it be at work or at a board event or what have you. i dont even start convos with my own family members, i am just horrible at the whole social thing.

Same here. I'll think about talking to whoever is there, but then I just avoid the situation and walk the other way.
As for family members, I can joke around with a few of them about sports and wrestling, and if shit gets heated, political bullshit.

Even with family, if I don't have some alcohol in my veins, don't expect me to be at all personable.

So my buddy is all ready to hang out with me today. And suddenly I don't feel like hanging out. It's a gorgeous day outside, but here I am, sitting on my duff, not wanting to go out until 4 hours from now. I want to hit a bar, at night, close to midnight so there are fewer people in the bar and a chance of nabbing a bar stool, and throw down a few suds with my pal. I want to be a barfly. That's not exactly social.
But god forbid he wants to just hang out, not drink, and play video games or watch a flick with me, cuz I don't want to do anything with him other than drink beers and bitch about life and bitches. Perchance he wants to play a game of Chess milord? Why bother...and I don't have any good two players games...I have yet to get a Wii. Maybe I should go wit him and see the Grindhouse...my chick don't like babes n' bullets type movies.
But I'm probably just gonna sit here and think about maybe hanging out with him until it's 9pm, and then I'll wanna do something. Shame he wants to be home by 11pm.

As much of an outsider as I usally feel, I'm amazed I'm identifying with some of the posts as much as I am.
This exact scenario has happened to me countless times before, and none of my friends quite understand it, even if I try to explain it to them.

That's a good point -- and why I usually bail on office happy hours and company parties. It's the whole "worlds colliding thing". That plus being single, I don't want to have to hear about significant others, spouses, life partners and children.

I live in a brownstone and there are two apts to a floor. My neighbor's front door is two feet across the hall from mine. If I hear them leaving I wait until they're gone before I leave my apt. And those are the neighbors I LIKE.
I've often waited in my car to wait for my neighbors to get into the building first so I don't have to run into them in the tiny vestibule. Why is it the neighbor I like the least takes all the time in the world to get into the building?

this is very funny, in my house growing up, I would never speak to anyoe, maybe giv e a nod once in a while.
One time I was plastered and was the life of the Party with the Neighbors, after that they would want to chat, I turned back to my anti social self and nodded and waved.
Nothing worse then small talk with someone that all you have in common is that you live near each other
