One of the best Rock riffs ever is Franz Ferdinand's Take Me Out. There's just something really catchy and great about it.

I also have to nominate Finger 11's Paralyzer. I can't even explain what it is about the riff in the song, it just hits me on some weird level.

F_S Doesn't Mind Telling You That His Favorite Riff Is The Infantile, Easily Played 10-Second Riff In The Middle Of "Incense And Peppermint". It Is So Incredibly Juvenile, And Yet It Epitomized Psychedelic Rock. It Still Gives Fat Goosebumps 40 Years Later.

Also, The Overplayed And Predictible "Baker Street", Which Fat Thinks That MikeyBoy Said He Hated. But That Is OK, 'Cause Music Is A Matter Of Personal Taste.

By The Way, J-Lo Looked Spectacular On Idol Tonight.

Not necessarily my favorite but the opening to "When the Levy Breaks" is certainly up there. GNR's Mr. Brownstone rocks the house.

Ritalin likes this. Not only does Fat Sunny post in the third person, when he's demonstrating how to post to someone else, he has THEM posting third person.

Ritalin loves consistency.

Love the FezPaul picks:

Black Sabbath- N.I.B. - The definition of rock and roll bass, along with Into the Void.

Jimi Hendrix- Machine Gun - Guitar and drums become visual.

Gotta add:

Blind Faith - Had to Cry Today - Clapton brings the intensity of Cream and adds beauty

Jimi Hendrix - Manic Depression - Simply because of the 3/4, the key to understanding the brilliance of Hendrix. The method to his madness. Not just a musician but a composer. An inventor.

Freddy King - Let the Good Times Roll - Wow. The best of the Three Kings.

"Yer Blues" as performed by Lennon, Clapton, Kieth Richards and Mitch Mitchell - the Dirty Mac - on Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus.

Let's face it; Keith Richards, Malcolm and Angus Young, and Jimmy Page are the undisputed kings of riff-rock. There are far too many choices to pick any one as the best, but I'll say "Can't You Hear Me Knockin'" for Keith, "Whole Lotta Rosie" for AC/DC, and "The Ocean" for Page.

Two songs I just listened to:

"Voodoo Chile" - Hendrix , the whole song is awesome; the opening riff with the wah-wah can't be beat

"It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Want To Rock n' Roll)" - AC-DC , the bagpipes jam out

one more jam: "Celebrated Summer" Husker Du ; starts acoustic, goes electric

There's a LOT of Mars Volta with awesome riffs, but Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) has an amazing one.

I have, and I still haven't heard a single band that can generate the power from a riff like the three bands I mentioned.

And Mars Volta is probably the gayest sounding band I've heard since The Killers.

They're 21st century equivalents of The Village People if you ask me.

they're not gay, they're innovative. Seriously though, I think the Mars Volta is a good band, I can see how they wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea but I respect the fact that they're doing something different.

Personal tastes and preferences have nothing to do with an open mind. If something sounds awful to me, it sounds awful. Despite repeated attempts to convince me otherwise, I'd still hate the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

If you despise the color orange and I bought you an orange outfit, would I say "keep an open mind" when you told me you hated it?

I just wanted everyone to know I'm not some old fuddy duddy who only likes music from my youth. There's a ton of new bands that I dig and I like "discovering" new music. It's funny, though - a few years ago JerseyRich excitedly told me about this band that he had discovered and they absolutely blew him away. It was Mars Volta.

Since we share similar musical tastes, I was eager to hear them. He gave me the disc. I listened to it 3 times because I thought maybe I was missing something. I gave it back to him and told him to never give me anything that crappy again.

Probably the greatest riff ever written by mortal man.

Agreed...Walk Away is a great tune.

My two cents:

Rockin' in the Free World - so infectious it's been covered more than just about any rock song I can think of.

Suicide Solution - Randy Rhoads was such a genius, he created the riff to this song while warming up to play. So sad how little of his work we have to enjoy.

Unchained - Eddie's "Solo Project" is chocked-full of delicious, angry riffiness.

...and too many others to list without it becoming "my favorite songs" list.

Guilty Pleasure Riffs:

The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows by Brand New- I'm no fan of emo, and the whole song isn't exactly an instant classic, but the first time I heard the hook of this song I wanted to loop it & blast it out of a stereo on 11 until my ears bled.

Hazy Shade of Winter - never heard the Simon & Garfunkel version, but I always thought the Bangles' version would have been such a great song if the guitar was more out in front of the mix because the riff was so catchy.

How about Hair of the Dog by Nazarath?

Here's a few:

"Sugar Kane" by Sonic Youth
"Debaser" by The Pixies
"Street Waves" by Pere Ubu

And the greatest guitar song ever: "Marquee Moon" by Television.

And I gotta agree with Gvac: Mars Volta is pretentious bullshit. All the trappings of prog rock without its musical merit.
