View Full Version : I Don't Have a Cell Phone

A.J.

As I mentioned elsewhere, I refuse to get a cellphone. First, I hate talking on the phone. Second, I don't want to be bothered when I'm out. Third, I hate carrying the damn thing around with me.

I survived without one before they existed, and I can survive without one now that they're available.

I don't have one either. I had one in College rather than having to bother sharing a phoneline with my roommates. Now that I'm on my own I don't spend that much time on the phone so there's no way to justify paying for two different lines and I'd rather have the land line.

I don't have on either. I had one for years for work and once I left that jib I just never got one. I hated that fucking thing.

Uhhh....you guys know you can just turn 'em off, right?

You make it sound like once you have one you're on some kind of electronic leash for the rest of your life!

i technically don't have a cellphone.
my agency gives me a phone so i use that one. but i turn the thing off when i'm not working. My wife has a cell phone, so i use that one when i'm out and need to call someone. and by me, i mean i make her call and talk to them.

Actually Gvac that is what they are. the cell phone for work is never allowed to be off and must be answered at all times of day. I see their point. if i didn't need one for work, i would give some thought to not keeping my own phone too. i dont see that part happening since i do it as a great means to keep in touch with people while i am out and about living my life. my own phone does get turned off or ignored all the time.

plus how else could i have seen the pics that Reilly sent to me last phriday night?

I have two cellphones; one for personal use and one for business. I also have a Nextel that the company provides.

With 3 phones and my XM Roadie, the inside of my work truck looks like a spider web with all the chargers, ear pieces, and antennas attached.

It's true, you can just turn them off. Although, I used the I keep forgetting to charge my phone excuse when people were mad that they could get ahold of me, that now I seriously forget to charge it.

I like having my phone when I want it. It makes me feel better when i'm out, that if my car breaks down or something I don't have to ask a random person to use their phone. Although, i do hate that I can always be reached. There are lots of times when i just don't want to talk to anyone and my phone won't stop ringing!!! I won't answer it, but later on I have to try and explain to people why I didn't answer or didn't call them back until the next day.

When I was in Saudi Arabia I had to carry a cell for security reasons. I might as well have had a brick in my pocket for all the utility it had as well as the comfort it provided. In one year, I may have made and received a total of 10 calls on it.

If I could, I'd get rid of my landline too. If only there was some "pay as you go system" as opposed to the 40+ bucks a month I'm wasting with that thing too. Maybe the Brady Bunch episode with the pay phone is the answer.

I do! Based on my smoking, drinking and poor diet, I'll need technology to keep me alive someday. Maybe something like...

Your landline bill is over 40 bucks a month? Why?

If you don't make many calls on it just get basic service for about $20 and use 10-10-220 or some similar "pay as you go" long distance service.

That's fucking wonderful!

I do the exact same thing. The only difference is that I throw my wife my cell phone and get her to call.

I had a cell phone from 95-01, haven't had one since. I'll use my work cell to stay in touch with home when I'm traveling, but it's only on during business hours other than that. I don't have a problem with the technology- I was sort of an early adopter after all- but the cell phone culture is annoying.

My boyfriend doesn't have one either.

It's never a problem really unless he is running to the store to get something and i remember something else, or he forgets.

His logic is "If people need to get a hold of me THAT badly then they will find a way."

I cant see how everyone doesnt have a cell phone. Maybe its just me but I need my cell. Its gotten to the point that I only call people on their cell b/c you know you will find them. I cant remember the last time I called someone on theur home phone.

I use my cell co mush I cancelled my land line. No one was calling it and I have so many minutes and free nights and weekends thats the home phone becamse a waste of money.

I've had one for about 12 years and I rarely use it. I got it mostly for when I'm driving long distances (came in handy when I had a tire blowout in MD). And it's a really ancient Nokia I got for free.

I *hate* people who get out of the subway or PATH and automatically get on the phone. Is anyone THAT important that they have to be connected 24-7? Oh, and DON'T get me started on the people who spend hours on their laptops at Starbucks.

And another thing, I am disgusted with the way old people are depicted on television. We are not all vibrant, fun loving sex maniacs. Many of us are bitter, resentful individuals who remember the good old days when entertainment was bland and inoffensive. The following is a list of words I never want to hear on television again. Number one: bra. Number two: horny. Number three: family jewels.

why dont you just get a pay as you go cell phone and leave it at the house.
come home, check messages, see missed calls(no telemarketers because it is a cell phone)
and then leave it there

cheaper then most home plans(my buddie pays like 15 bucks a month for his) and you ever went somewhere you could take it with you.

I agree with this....And I find it annoying when people walk around places like, say, bookstores, and carry on loud personal conversations on their cell phones. They just walk around yapping, oblivious.

There is no reason to not have a cell phone these days. I have one of those pay as you go Tracfone things. I have to add at least $20 every 90 days, that's it. I pretty much leave the thing off except if I'm out. You can get a very basic phone that just sends and receives calls for like $20 bucks from just about any of those companies. Believe me, I'm not paying some shitdick cell company $50 a month for a stupid service and I don't need the latest, greatest new phone. My phone rings, sends calls, has a couple cheesy games I never play and that's that.

I only give my phone number to people I would want to talk to anytime so no one I don't know ever calls me. It's not a leash it's just an extra tool to use when I'm out. Comes with free voice mail so if someone needs me and my phone is off I get the message later.

I turned my phone on 2 days before the alternator belt on my old car snapped and I was left stranded in the dark wilderness of NJ up near the PA border for like 2-3 hours. It was the best 20 bucks I ever spent. I can't even imagine how much worse that night would have been without a cell. If you get one for nothing else besides emergency road calls, get one.

I love having a cell phone. If someone calls and I don't want to talk, I just don't answer. I also have some limited internet access on it, so I can check my email, check the weather, get directions, look up movie times, read the news, etc, its pretty convenient to have with you. I have had the work cell phone before, and that is horrible. I had a Nextel a few years before the other providers started offering the push to talk BS. When all my friends started to get it I tried to explain to them how awful it is to allow other people to be able to talk to you whenever they want, without you even having to actively answer. It brought back horrible memories of my boss's voice being able to follow me where ever I went.

I agree wholeheartedly...I never had one up until a couple weeks ago.

Then, my sister basically came to me and said she had an extra one she couldn't break the contract on and wanted to know if I'd want it and pay her the $10 a month for it (it's bare minimum as far as service goes).

I told her I'd give it a shot...I'll admit, I like the convenience, but I can see this annoying me VERY quickly.

My big thing is that I like having quiet moments to myself during the day to kind of straighten out my thoughts, and I don't like the idea of everyone knowing where I am all the time.

As soon as I start getting calls that intrude on those two things, I'm sure that'll be the end of it.

Also, I've always hated when I'm out with people and the spend the whole night on the phone, or texting back and forth...why the hell did you come out then if that's all you're going to do?!?!?!

I definitely never want to be that guy.
