Today I was at the store and heard a woman say to her young son " Do you want to go potty later" Why do parents say words like potty? Why not bathroom? Potty makes me cringe. Something about that word coming from a grown woman in baby talk just sounds awful. Why the baby words?

Wouldn't be weird to say, "Stop with the bathroom mouth."

"Go to the bathroom" doesn't really work for toddler. It doesn't say what they are doing. You can go to the bathroom without urinating or defecating. I guess the only other option would be to say "urinate" instead of "potty", but that's really just as gross. Of course the mom could say "piss", but that would be weird, too.

I've always talked to my little cousins like an adult, it's surprisng that they are so capable at conversation. I think kids respect that when you don't talk down to them.

Would it be weird or proper and dignified? Plus saying "Stop with the potty mouth" always made me cringe as well. I say " Stop saying fuck you fuckin assfuck" That gets the point across.

lledeer,
parents usually say words like "potty" because most kids at a young age can not say bathroom and "potty" is easier.

Absolutly amazing. (http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=potty&searchmode=none) I would have thought that the term potty was from way before 1942.
