I've realized that I'm prejudiced against Russian people

There, I said it. I'm not proud of it, and I didn't think that I had a prejudice bone in my body, but my prolonged interaction with them has really led me to dislike them. Now, if you are of Russian ancestry, rest assured I'm not referring to you. I'm sure that you're just as sweet as punch. I'm referring to the "right-off-the-boat" variety of Russians.

In recent years I've come into increasing contact with Russians. I live in a town with a modest amount of Russian emigres. I also have Russian students in my classes, that I teach at a community college. There are several instances that I could write about, but then this post would turn into an even longer epistle, which I'm sure no one would want to read.

Let me just say that there were three instances that occured this week alone that have sent me over the edge as to my opinion of the entire Russian culture. First off, more than any other ethnic stereotype, I find that most Russians have an inflated sense of entitlement. They expect everyone to bend over backwards to make sure they get everything that's coming to them, yet they wouldn't go out of their way to cross the street to spit on you if your hair was on fire. A "please" and a "thank-you" would be nice every now and then. Oh, and it's never a good idea to yell at your professor, because you don't like the grades you're getting, because you insist on turning in papers that look like they were written by an even more illiterate Yakov Smirnov.

Maybe this newer generation is different, but I find most older Russians to be very hard working and usually very family oriented.

We have a HUGE Russian community in the Sacramento area. We have several Russian markets that have popped up recently. And the Russian Mafia has a huge presence too.

I can't stand them...their mismatched, garage sale clothes, disgusting teeth, and they take up the ENTIRE isle in the grocery store. I had a yard sale once and one russian woman tried to talk me down from a $.25 stuffed animal... I didn't sell it to her just on principle.

I gotta agree with the original statement, russians in general are douchebags. I was born in brooklyn but my family came over in the mid 70's from Russia. I grew up in coney island and now live in brighton beach and dealing with them constantly, makes me long for the good old days of living in the projects.

My family wasn't ever like that but my family is just regular crazy junkies, alcoholics and overall schizo's. I do remember the bribery though, even in the 2nd grade, this russian kids parents would try to bribe the teacher with jewlery and fuckin gaudy porcelain statues to pass their retarded kids in class. They're a very materialistic people too, love to show off about what they own and how much they paid for this and that. Actually, I don't mind Russians in general myself. I've certaintly dealt with my fair share of the kind of Russians that are jackasses or feel they were the most important thing on the planet but I find that kind of douchebag in every race and culture. I've worked with Greeks, Italians, Irish, Indian, German, Asian, etc, that I could say the same exact thing about.

I hung out with Russian students when i was in school and they were a hell of a lot of fun to drink with. They were also interesting people and great friends.
The younger rich ones I see around Manhattan are a completely different type. I watched the Man U-Chelsea match in a midtown bar with some Russian guys with gold chains and their shirts unbuttoned way too low. They were complete assholes. Of course they were supporting Chelsea and were trying to provoke fights with the Man U crowd. I support Arsenal and hate both teams equally but I kind of sided with the Man U side of the bar.
I also lived in an apartment in the Lower East Side and there was a pack of really obnoxious Russian models living upstairs.
Maybe many of the Russians who go on to university tend to be more interesting, thoughtful, and fun to be around but the young thug type guys or women who want to be strippers or models are more pushy, crass, and annoying.
