I did it. After playing three rounds... I bought a cheap set of golf clubs on ebay yesterday. For $120 shipped, well, they can't be any worse than what I would have picked up at Target or something for $120, right?? I mean, I suck, and probably won't play more than half a dozen times a year anyway, so why spend more? I need to save my $$ for climbing!

So... who wants to play?

I play a lot and I'm terrible but I enjoy just getting the "F" away for four hours on a Sunday. There are a lot worse places to spend a Sunday. Enjoy!

I've only golfed about 5 holes. On my first hole, I got a lucky break on my drive. I sliced it way left into the woods, but it bounce off a tree and went right back to the fairway. I made a 25 foot put from the fringe to make par on a par 3.

I sucked on every hole after that.

It was a fun game, though. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. You might want to see if there are any course that require a lot rock climbing. It may not be exciting enough for you any other way.

In the present, she hits a 280 yd drive. Time for me to quit golf. I've always had a thing for field hockey chicks anyway.

the clubs are the cheap part. it's the golf balls that you lose every round, the greens fee's and the cart rental

it might be the most frustrating hobby in the world, but so much fun. good luck

Oh, how this makes me think of the good old days. The first thing I ever did as a child, to make money, was search for lost golf balls at the nearby country club. We'd sell them back to the golfers. Good times... good times.

I guess crap like that doesn't fly these days.

Its the one sport that you can suck at all day and then get that one great drive or putt and you love it all over again.

I think you did good, your not a pro so why do you need a great set (expensice set). Im a lefty and its hard to find a good affordable set. Im on my 3rd set of clubs and so far very happy with them. Now if I only had the chance to play a little more and if I was actually any good then oh then...

Last time I played, I went home with 7 more balls than I started with, plus a pocket full of tees. At this point (probably always) I don't think the ball I use will make a difference....

The first time I went I think I seriously swung over 1000. I was using my boyfriend's old clubs, and I kept driving into the ground. After about 10 holes I finally just started playing EVERYTHING with the 9 iron... And then I hit it ok, but it took a long time. Second time I played, I hit "176" but I didn't really count all the times I swung and missed the ball entirely (I only counted if I hit the ground) and last time I swung 173, but that was counting everything... so I suck, but I'm getting better. I'll be happy if I'm under like 130 by the end of the summer (ie within the next 4 times I play golf).

And carts? Screw that. I walk. I need SOME exercise...

Start goint to the Driving Range regularly & you'll see a difference in your game.

The hardest part about my golf game is hitting drivers. I don't know what it is, I just feel really weird using woods. I have a 1-Iron and a 2-Iron in my bag.

Another recommendation if you're starting out is using "clone" clubs - knockoffs of the real brands but have the look and design of the real thing. Callaways. Good stuff.

You know what would make your golf game a LOT better? Go out to the Par 3 course in Flushing Corona park - take the 7 train, get off like you're going to Shea, only go towards the Tennis center, then when you get to the circle at the entrance of the park, go left - and play there. Take your wedge, your putter and a couple of balls.

It really helps. Most of the shots you take in golf occur inside of 100 yards of the hole, so you can really improve your game quickly.

The best thing that you can do as a beginner to the sport is take a couple lessons from a qualified teaching pro, which i am. Get the basics and fundamentals down and the game makes alot more sense and you'll have less frustration and more fun. If you have some girlfriends that play golf or are interested in starting take a group lesson. Group lessons are cheaper and can be more fun and less pressure. Ask for a PGA professional when you are looking for an instructor and have some fun with the game.

Yeah, but you're aging well ;)

I've always wanted to pick up golf, if only for another excuse to get outside. Instead I've been playing bocci--cheaper and lazier

I started golfing at 12 and used to get really pissed when I fucked up. Then I came to accept that I'm just not that good, and it became a lot more fun to play. Any sport where you can drink beer and smoke reefer is cool by me. I don't get to play too often since moving from FL, though.

I'll have to keep playing until I get a hole-in-one, then I can move on to shuffleboard.

I lived in florida and the golf courses looked nice and yes you could play all year, but the grass sucked. The grass and dirt werent really grass and dirt it was like plastic and sand. Even the places that the grass was grass the dirt was still too sandy. I dont know I just didnt like playing in florida, plus everything was flat, no hills, or anything like it.

I just got home from my local driving range. I sucked so bad for the first half bucket, the 2nd bucket I was hitting much better. I need to go play some more.

I stopped by chelsea piers on my way home from work today to just get info on hours and prices, and they were having golf fest! I was by myself and a little intimidated so I didn't actually pony up the $15 to get in, but now I kind of wish I had. I can't wait until my clubs actually arrive and I can get out and use them. I'm all kinds of excited!

Of course, I have the post-ebay-win doubt thing going on, too, and I keep checking ebay to see if I paid too much for the clubs... I think I paid about the average of what that set usually goes for. My friend just bought a set for $90 inc shipping which I think was maybe $15 less than what they usually go for, so I'm a little jealous, but on the other hand I think the clubs she got were all "ti-reinforced" while the ones I bought supposedly have a 7075-ti driver and stainless steel irons, so from what I read, that should mean they're of marginally higher quality?

Nah, "ti-reinforced" sound like a sales gimick anyway. Play with those that you got for a while and you'll get to the point where you may want to see a difference in using a big name set. As if you can hit some of your playing partners clubs, they usually won't mind and then you can see if there is a whole lot of different feel from your current set. Don't sweat the equipment too much. Also, a good way to get decent name brand balls at a cheap price is to buy "recovered" AAA or AAAA grade balls on e-bay. Just make sure they were not water balls. I got 50 Titelists for like 16 bucks. Much less painful when they go hither and yon. :-)
