Am i a snob/or a people stupid

After attending almost 2 years of film school I feel that I am more versed in film then the average.

Last night my buddies friend brought over a guy that had written a few scrips, and called himself a director.
So I already hated him becuase he had never directed anything and was talking about directors as though he was more intelligent and qualified then a lot of them.
(a director has directed something, not wrote something once that will go no where)
I had to leave the room when he started talking about film like he was a movie god and he had knowledge that surpassed anyone. He wasn't worth arguing with because he was drunk and disproportionately stubborn in general.

Now im going to have him drop of his scrip(as a person who went to film school i feel that im a better writer than him) so i can fucking destroy the script and hopefully destroy his dreams and strange self image, purely for my own satisfaction.

Would that be wrong or do people need to be put in their place?

I think it's very wrong, and you are a snob if you think you're so much better than he is that it's now your mission to destroy his script. What have you written that you can compare to his? Why would you take his own work (which is his, he made it, and anything you do with it should be considered a crime) and destroy it out of some vicious petty OPINION you have of him? If you ever did anything like that to something I made, I'd see to it your life was a living hell. I wouldn't blame the guy if he went after you if you did something like that. If he sucks so much, as Sailor points out, why don't you just let him suck and realize he's a failure on his own? It's not your sworn duty to uphold the Good Writing God's Great Will by smiting this fool. And if you did destroy his work, I'd consider you a petty piece of shit. I have a very low opinion of people who sabotage others' projects for no better reason than they don't like them personally.

And by the way, just because you went to a school doesn't mean you're automatically superior than people at directing. There are plenty of awesome directors out there who never went to school. The credentials are mostly meaningless unless you can back them up with experience. Knowledge and experience are two wildly different things.

A great friend of mine went to 4 full years of film school and she still asks me for my opinion on things she does because she doesn't automatically assume she's made an awesome piece of video or writing. Of course, most of her actual experience was garnered from making wedding videos, photo shoots and videos of people's kids at some mall so she could make money to go to school in the first place..and that's what got her hired with Montecito Picture Company after graduation. She now works for a studio and she's very happy with her work. I think part of her success is that she's humble and doesn't harp on her superior skills she "acquired" from film school. That's a fine way to burn every bridge.

a. no the guy is quite obviously an idiot with his head well embedded in his ass.
I acquired very little from school, outside of knowing that I knew nothing, and that I was never going to be any good.
The real thing paying 8k per semester taught me was that the school was selling peoples dreams back to them.
And hes such a pompous asshole I really want to kick him in his falsely inflated ego.
I want to be there to watch as he realizes that he sucks at life.

b. I haven't done it yet. The reason I posted this was the get a gauge of where this would stack up morally. Obviously it wouldn't be on my top ten list of great deeds either way, but with the ccc going that strong against it, i guess ill read his script and see if I can give him some positive feed back.

If your attention is to hurt someone, then obviously it is morally suspect. Even if he deserves it.

On the other hand, a good critique with a willing suspect always makes a better writer. If he really wants to be a writer/director, he has to learn to take criticism (alot of criticism) and not let it break him. If everyone likes your work, then you will never improve.

My mentor in college used to hate my writing. He thought it was self indulgent and the characters were unlikeable. His criticism made me work harder, and by the time I was a senior I was winning awards for my work. And he was very proud. I would be even more of a pathetic excuse for a writer without him being an asshole.

Going to film school doesnt make you better then him at anything. If your better then great, but who are you to think he has no talent. You havent even read any of his scripts yet.

And one more thing. I hate when people correct people about spelling on messageboards b/c its not english class. But if your going to talk as if your better then others at your craft atleast know how to spell the word/thing your talking about. Its called a script not scrip. Doing it once I thought you made a mistake but doing as much as you have speaks clearly about you and your craft.

considering he said destroy his script and hopefully his dreams, one can only assume he was talking about critiquing it. unless we are led to believe that he thinks simply by burning some paper would destroy this guys dreams and self image. surely he would have an electronic backup of his script.
