View Full Version : I Don't Give to my Alma Mater

Thomas Merton

Recently I've been bombarded by requests from my college to give to the Capital Fund, as many "exciting" things are happening on campus that require my donation. I went to a private school, paid an above average tuition for the time and have contributed a bit in the past.

I feel no obligation to contribute. I attribute any success I've achieved to my parents and motivation, not the nuggets of wisdom imparted by a largely liberal, pinko faculty.

Am I a bad alumnus?

I say Fuck 'em. They got enough of my money. Any correspondence I receive is immediately shit-canned.

No.

F_S Used To Get Guilted Into Giving His Alma Mater A Fair Amount. But As The Years Went By, He Realized Two Things: (1) That He Was Not Fond Of What His College Had Become, And (2) That The College Already Had A Gigantic Endowment, And That Any Money Fat Could Spare For Donations Would Be Far More Helpful At A Small Local Charity.

So Fat Stopped Giving To His College 10 Years Ago, And Gives His Extra Dough To A Few Local Animal Charities That He Knows, And That Can Really Use The Help.

It's Your Money, Thomas Merton, And You Send It Wherever You G-D Please!

I never give, because when I went to college, all the $$ went to the sports programs. The art department looked like a crack house in an episode of COPS, but we had a great gym and football stadium.

I didn't graduate college but I get this shit from my private High School. My time there was not that enjoyable but recently I've come to terms with all that shit.

But much like jennysmurf, we were WAY too concerned about our sports program for my liking. They got enough of my money. I heard the yearly tuition went up over 100% since I left too.

Fuck that, they got enough money.

F_S, you continue to be Thomas' favorite poster. I agree, just like buying food locally, donations are best given to organizations where you can donate time as well. I also donate to a scholarship fund/golf tourney for a former roommate who died in a car crash. Much more meaningful.

i have both my high school and my college asking me for money. the last time my high school called me was last summer and it was a kid i graduated with but havent heard from since 2000. when he called me i was in the middle of a trip (my second time doing mushrooms) so i told him i couldnt donate right now because i was tripping on mushrooms. he replied with, 'well, this is definately the most interesting call ive had today and i understand the circumstances. thanks.' then he hung up and i havent gotten a call from them since. i think they removed me from the list.

fellow stanner here, and i haven't donated anything myself. not to my college, either. they both got plenty while i was there.

if i strike it rich, maybe i'll give something back, but until then, it's not happening.

F_S Had No Idea What A "Stanner" Is, So He Did A Search And Came Up With This:

Archbishop Molloy High School is a Catholic Marist school which fosters an exemplary education in mind, body and spirit for a diverse college bound population. Molloy offers a unique, challenging and comprehensive program of instruction, guidance, and athletics. In this school, individuals recognize their own self-worth and develop a lifetime of Christian values, critical thinking, leadership skills and service to others.

a stanner is basically: a word created by Archbishop Molloy High School. Before modern-day Molloy was built in Briarwood, New York, the school was named St. Ann's Academy. The students were known as St. Anner's, and this name over time developed into simply Stanner. All of Molloy's students, current and alumni, are known as Stanners. I've given back to my high school, my college and my law school. Yes, I paid a lot of money to the final two institutions (and I mean a lot), but that money didn't pay for every benefit I received. A number of benefits were made available because of alumni support. So I give back so that future students can enjoy school the way I did.

yeah, flag was a pretty awesome game. no use trying to explain it here, but for the non-stanners, it's like a combination of capture the flag and steal the bacon on steroids.

good times...

That's what they SAY--but I have a conspiracy theory about that. It's one of many conspiracy theories I have, actually.

Just to take a slightly different point of view.
I give every year to both my college and Dental school. Not a ton but enough. The school of course sends an anual report with donors in it and a donation level. So its kind of fun to see what level of giving my drunk college buddays are giving and they too can see that I'm not a piker. Clearly a selfish motive but the check clears so I'm certain the school doesn't care if I do it for ego reasons.

Second and a bit more important to me is that I now have children approaching college age. They in turn have friends and I have patients who I feel would benefit from going to the same college. I personally hope my daughter will go there. I have been able to write letter of recomendation for some students and hopefully my daughter and I don't doubt that my donations, though not great, will hold sway in a positive way for those I have suggested.
Its worth thinking about when you get to the same point as I am. J
ust my two cents

. . .I apparently have a lot of free time.

Rather than donating financially to my Alma Mater, which I intend on doing once I budget for it, since I still live nearby, I volunteer my time with the Alumni Association to run events for fellow alumni & their families, as well as reaching out to current students with new opportunitites for connections, or running fun activities through the year to encourage them to stay involved with the school.

I currently co-chair a committee which runs an annual event for alumni with small children to bring their kids to campus so they can have a taste of what Mom or Dad experienced when they were students. Seeing all those little faces and their enthusiastic parents really warms my heart . . . and makes it easier to be a great representative for the alumni association and our commitment to preserving what we all love about our Alma Mater.

Due to some folks' advancements, I've been offered an opportunity to co-chair the Homecoming Committee this year. . .all without having donated a cent beyond my membership dues, which only goes towards funding the alumni association anyway.

If that's an option for you, definitely do it. Sometimes it takes a little while to get involved in this way . . . I'd been out of school almost 4 years before I started volunteering, but I feel it's time well-spent and a great outlet for my creativity.
