View Full Version : Countdown to my Colonoscopy

I am scheduled for my first colonoscopy tomorrow and wondered who might be interested in seeing what happens to me as I begin the process for the preparation.
The day before, you are suppose to not eat any solid food, so I made up some jello and have containers of broth ready.
The day before the procedure is supposed to be the worst part. Basically, I will be taking stuff to give me the mother of all diareah!
I had to get a prescription for this stuff called HalfLytley .
In the box is a half gallon sized container with powder that I have to mix with warm water shortly, and also in the box is four tablets of Dulcolax.
I took the tablets at noon. At six PM I am to start drinking the liquid and the shits should start shortly after that. I am NOT looking forward to it!
The idea here to have your intestines cleaned out so that when they look in there, they have a clear view.
It is now 3:15 and I do not feel any ill effects of the four pills, but I am hungry.
Also, my procedure is tomorrow at 3 PM, so that means I cannot eat or drink anything after midnight tonite and until after the procedure. So tomorrow I will have to wait until 5 PM maybe before I can eat again...
I will keep you posted as how the prep effects me. If you do not like this subject, look at other threads!

Good luck SR, and don't worry too much about the procedure. Make no mistake, the worst part is the prep. Just don't mess around & try to run out to do any errand because sometimes the pills & solution take effect out of nowhere. Just thank your lucky stars (and you will when you take your first sip) that HalfLYTELY is the new standard. When I had my first (when I was 15), it was GoLYTELY...and it was a whole gallon.
Afterwards, you'll be an extremely hungry & extremely flatulant (from the air they pump in you to help them look around). But other than that I don't think there are any side effects of the procedure.
Good luck, hope everything turns out to be OK.

Well I can offically chalk that up to things I never wanted to know about my roomate. (Then again, he has a SLEW of shit on me...no pun intended)
SR, good luck with the procedure. I hope everything comes out ok. (again, no pun intended)

Thank you guys. Any recommendations are appreciated, as to what to expect or any tips. Someone told me a little vaseline around the bunghole helps. I am wondering what I will do tomorrow before I have to go in. It is going to be a loooong day..

halflytely is the same as golytely its just half the liquid. its not so bad, you'll shit like you never shit before. the pharmacist should have told you after you mix it refrigerate it after and itll taste a lil better.. try the cherry mix.

Sounds like you are starting off with an empty stomach, which is good - that means there's less to blow out. I am a GoLightly vet, so your half gallon of fluid also promises to make things easier. It wasn't bad, just inconvenient. I could not stray more than three steps from the toilet and walking seemed to trigger the sensation more, so I gave in and assembled reading material for the duration. It felt like a rocket was strapped to my butt during go time. Resist the urge to wipe like you normally would, or you will be raw before you finish, vasoline or not. Pat with TP only when necessary.
I remember being cautioned not to eat anything red before the colonoscopy, as that color affected the clarity of the scanning process. You will be loopy afterwards, so make sure someone picks you up and talks to the doc for any additional instructions. Lying on my side seemed to help me with the gassy feeling. I did not experience any discomfort and was actually conscious enough to see the first part of the scan before dropping off to dream land. Good luck!

My God! By 4:30 (mind you, I do not start drinking the liquid until 6PM), I had diareah 3 times. I think I am going to lose a ton of weight tonite! I lubed up the A hole, just in case.

Do you think it would be a bad idea to not drink anything else tonight? I can already feel dehydrated, and it hasnt truly started yet. They told me not to drink or eat anything after midnight tonite. Do you think drinking will make you shit more?

My wife already made me a huge pot of thin chicken and rice soup, with orzo in it for after the procedure.

I've had this procedure a few times when I was treated for colon cancer, it's no big deal, it doesn't hurt, they give ya some kinda twilight drug that makes ya goofy as hell. I even watched them rape my colon on a monitor & found the whole (hole?) experience quite amusing! The worst part is the "cleansing" the day before, enemas, potions, lotions, whatever... which you are enduring rite now, you will have diarrhea until you are empty.

I had a few more bouts last night, and one 3 AM shitfest, and this morning I feel like I may go again. I think the 4 pills where was did the bulk of the work, and the drink just flushed the rest. I feel like there is still a bit of liquid in me. My procedure is at 3 this afternoon, but I have to be at the hospital at 2. I am hungry and thirsty now. Most people I know say that when they do what I did last night, the procedure is in the morning. I wish mine was, but they had some kind of scheduling issue with the Dr.
My parents will drive me home. As soon as I get home, I will probably want to woof down the soup I have!

I have a consult with a Dr tomorrow morning to schedule a colonoscopy. Let me know how it goes. As others have already stated I have always heard that teh prep is the worst part.

Almost everyone I talked to said they had theirs done first thing in the morning. I wish I waited until they had a morning appointment, but it would have been in July. This is pretty bad, waiting around. The shitting thing was not as bad as I thought. I am kind of used to diareah. Make sure you schedule yours for the morning, mon

Well, it's over.
I went to the hospital and filled out all the paperwork and then waited to be called.
They prepped me by putting electrodes on me and inserting an IV.
They wheeled me into the endoscopy unit and prepared me further. I met with the anesthesiologists and the Dr.
The anesthesiologist asked me how Im feeling and I told him I want to be OUT COLD.
The Dr had me lay on my side and expose the buttox
He give me a shot of white stiff into my IV and it didnt do anything for a few seconds and the next thing I knew, I was in the recovery room! Kind of cool! I felt gassy and like I needed to crap, and they told me it was just from the air they pumped into me, and that it was normal and to just blast away. But I had a hard time with that and kept asking to go to the bathroom. They let me in and I let go, it was all air.
My parents picked me up and took me home. Now I am eating and drinking to my hearts content.
The Dr didnt find any polyps or anything, just internal hemmorids.
My ass does feels a little funny now though... Not painful, just....loose?

Now, I need help. They stuck electrodes on me, and the adhesive is now stuck painfully on my body hair. I tried soaking in the tub, but it didnt come off. I dont have baby oil, and I smeared shaving cream on it, but obviously I cant get under the pad. Any suggestions on getting it off painlessly?

Most insurance will only allow them after 50 yrs old. But your Dr can get around that if he suspects something. I'm 42, so this Dr got around it for me because I was having some bleeding

i normally get either 1 a year or 1 every other year, but i also have a stomach disease.
You dont need one unless you are having weird bowel movements or some bleeding.

I had some luck with alcohol pads, but some of those electrodes have adhesive that is really stubborn. In that case, I put on a new t-shirt (or sweatshirt), let the lint get all over the glue so you can see exactly where it all is & it kinda "fills up" the sticky area, so only the side that's stuck to you is sticky. It's hard to wipe off when the exposed side is still sticky & sticks to the rag or whatever you're wiping yourself with. Then just rub it with you fingertips & let it peel off like when you used to put elmer's glue on your fingertips in grade school & pretended to peel off your skin.

By the way, I noticed them cleaning the scope they were going to use in me as I entered the room, and now realise that they must keep reusing the same scope on people, and they just keep cleaning it off.

Well mine is tomorrrow at 1pm. I had the same problem with not being able to get an AM appointment. I'd have to wait too long and my Dr. wants it do now.
Prep started about 10 minutes ago. With my first glass of Fleet Phoso soda. Can't wait for the fireworks to start.
I just can't stop thinking of No Filter Paul and in the diaper. I'm pretty sure this is what he drank.
