some jackass ran his mouth on a stupid message board, everybody thought it was written in stone.
if XM said "we are only suspending them", then canned them, thats different.
XM never said fired.
who cares what NFP wrote. he could have written that Fezzie was straight as an arrow, but until it comes from Fez's mouth, it's meaningless.

Imagine if NFP actually used his super-powers for good instead of evil?? Wouldn't this world be a much better place?? If his energies were focused in the right direction, he could probably end world hunger, resolve the war, and find a viable democratic presidential candidate.
now thats just crazy talk

I completely agree on that one. I've been kinda staying off Wackbag during this time because it's all "Cancel XM" talk and things are just starting to get back to normal. I wasn't cancelling XM because I bought it for Ron and Fez so I didn't want to get in an argument with any of the more passionate fans over there, because that would have been a distict possibility.
Once the Genie was let out of the bottle, there was no way to rationally deal with the situation. The masses were pissed, and they should have been. They were fed a lie that O&A were 100% fired. And that lie was presented in such a way as to make fans believe that someone within the show had taken a select few aside and told them O&A were actually fired but XM didn't want that getting out yet.
And in the radio atmosphere we exist in where one minute you're suspended the next you're out, everyone felt it was probably true. Will this teach people to better question sources for rumors? Yes it will. But should those people just be called "Idiots" for believing the huge lie that was spread around the net like wildfire? No, they were scared and upset and reacted. And in the end I feel they may have been somewhat used by whoever started that lie.

all of my feelings on this issue have been covered by one person or another in this thread, so I'm not going to bother trying say who was right or wrong. I just wanted to add that there is still the big PAC banner on the front page of FBA saying "The Opie and Anthony show has suspended for 30 days and are soon to be fired by XM satellite radio." They're coming back tomorrow, I think it might be smart to at least change you banner at this point. Its that kind of language that I think everyone has a problem with, I really think the people to blame are the folks in charge of Wackbag and FBA who took what one guy said and ran with it, that's just irresponsible. Oops I put my opinion in, my bad.

This is going to open me up to ridicule, but was Ron serious about the 15 minute delay? At this point I don't know what to believe, especially since I wouldn't put it past XM to do it.

I concur.
Think about it. I would never believe that XM would have a 15 minute delay, simply because they don't need it. How much is the terrestrial delay? 3 minutes? 5 seems to much to me? Why would XM have more?
And why would they need it? The purpose of a delay is to be able to dump objectionable material before it goes out. You don't need that much time to do that.
Plus, you would ruin the a show that has caller interaction. What's the standard length time for a topic? Probably 20-30 minutes. If you set up a topic, you'd have to wait for 15 mintues before the audience heard it, and you get a reaction. Plus, you'd have callers reacting to calls 15 minutes before.

I thought the old WNEW had a 40 second delay. And I thought I heard XM had an unintentional 3 second delay just due to the physical act of sound being created, put into the machines, bounced off the satellite and all of us receiving it.

I think the term "delay" in radio is the ability of the company to censor out a part of the show due to content.
What happens with the satellite, as you said, is an unintentional delay due to the technology. And I think it is around 8 seconds

In my six months of being a member of this board, I haven't found a need to post anything, until now. All I can say to those who are whining about being duped is that no one put a gun to your head and told you to cancel your subscriptions and or to smash your units. You did it of your own free will. Or maybe some of you are in the FOLLOWER catagory who have an insatiable need to be liked and included (see the thread about the luau) and get bent if you're not. I didn't cancel my subscription because I didn't get XM because of O&A. I got it for the NASCAR broadcasts and when they went bye-bye then discovered other stations. When they yanked O&A off XM I had a choice. My choice was to shrug it off and find another station to listen to, which I did. Just because Ant's sister said SHE did something, all you lemmings did the same thing in hopes of jumping on the bandwagon to be liked and accepted and to perhaps tell all your friends that "Ant's sister said to........." to make it sound like YOU had an in. Now that it seems that everything is fine, you're all crying FOUL! Well, if you're doing that it seems you canceled your subscriptions and smashed your units for the wrong reason. You weren't REALLY supporting O&A, you were looking for acceptance. Everyone's actions have a consequence, just as my posting this diatribe will have some sort of consequence on me.
Perhaps DD, Fat Opie, NFP and others have learned that there are MORE idiots out there than they realized and next time something remotely close to this happens again will RUN from the situation completely.
Someone here said they were looking for ANY piece of information...so consumed, so obsessed with their idols that they forgot that there are human beings involved with families. It's sooooooo high school. However, I'm going to stick my foot in it but good and say that the WINK WINK that went on here with the aforementioned "insiders/family" was nothing more than an enabler. They need to become invisible and not seek out attention they KNOW they're going to get. As a sister or brother in law or whatever, you KNOW the masses are going to look to you for answers, and there's NO way to cleanly NOT say anything (as the ending of the Soprano's will support) without speculation that will become assumed truth. Even a simple NO COMMENT will lead to speculation. You have more power than you know, or maybe you do know and it's a game? I hope not.

I think that's why i can still hear XM while about 1/3 the way thru a .7 mile tunnel. Almost seems like you pull the signal in with you than lose it. It's usually back within about 2 seconds coming out of the tunnel.

But it made the news, including the financial news. The stockholders know what the subs mean to their earnings from the quarterly reports but that's not their only news source. Canceling subs lets them know you're serious in no uncertain terms. Is 6,000 cancelled subs really going to hurt a company with 8 million of them?

he didn't say it hurt them, just let them know the listeners were serious. if 6k cancel over this suspension, how many times more would cancel if they let o&a go (or r&f either, if it somehow came down to that)? xm knows how many people listen to 202, i don't, and now they have to realize that a very significant portion of those subs (majority? vast majority??) would be at risk if they tried kowtowing to special interest groups.

i assume 98% of the folks who destroyed receivers did it to older receivers of theirs. as for not believing anyone, the info was coming from an insider who actually works for one of the show members (norton). it would be like mikeyboy posting on here that he heard from a source close to ron/fez that they were fired. you'd have to give him some credence. not to say that mikeyboy and NFP are in any way alike, but they're each rather close to one of the 202 shows.

I'm still not sure if I buy the "They almost got fired" line or not. My feeling is still that this was a sign to regulators that XM, and satellite radio as a whole, can police itself and thus regulation is not needed. There have been quite a few people who are in positions to make this merger much more difficult who have expressed reservations about the uncensored, unfettered nature of satellite radio, and I think that this is a sign to them "Hey, we don't let our guys get away with everything."
That is, I still don't think that this would have happened if the merger were not in the works.
That said, I'm not going to criticize the PAC or anyone who cancelled over this. A strong signal did get made, and it probably did make it easier to shut up XM suits who said "We should probably just go ahead and fire them." Though I don't think that was ever the true intention, I'm sure someone on XM's board or top brass said that at some point.
Let's review what has happened in the past:
ONA get suspended for 2 years from The top-rated syndicated afternoon drive show.
Don and Mike apologize for comments made about Hispanics and are almost fired.
Bubba the love sponge gets fired for what was said.
Mancow so feels the pressure that he turns against what he was known for.
Imus gets fired for making fun of the losing Rutgers woman's basketball team.
J.V. & Elvis get fired for a replay of a bit where they made fun of accents.
O&A lose sponsors where lil Jimmy makes light of rape.
Opie and Anthony are attacked in the press for being a thorn in the plan for the multi-billion dollar merger.
The FCC who has to approve the merger, wants to institute its standards on satellite radio.
Opie and Anthony are pressured to apologize for what Homeless Charlie said in studio.
XM suspends Opie and Anthony for 30-days because XM says it didn’t feel the apology was sincere enough.
Opie and Anthony are pressured against talking about XM for 30 days.
Opie and Anthony's Poker Tournament is cancelled.
What would you conclude would happen to ONA after a 30-day suspension?
XM would have waited for The Show to loose some of its following and no longer be front-page news and then fire them.
So what happened?
Opie and Anthony would have been fired from XM if not for the help of their fans.
I know that some of you will never accept this because of your biases against The Fans and Opie and Anthony and some of you are reading into those biases looking for other material explanations.
I also know that a very small faction of really negative people would want nothing more than Opie and Anthony to be fired.
For those who did help and do care:
It was a brutal campaign where we protested XM's decision in various ways that got LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of publicity for The Boys and set-up the argument that if they got fired, it would look very badly for XM. HappyTypingGirl was able to get on the cable news and shame XM multiple times as well as use PAC to defend ONA's freedom of speech against outsourced censorship. Patrice O'Neal was there on cable news supporting ONA. Thousands cancelled all their radios in protest and many of those will be listening by other methods from now on because of their disgust with XM. Thousands wrote and called XM, BBB, SEC, FCC, senators & representatives, the media, and others expressing our outrage and our struggle got much press and publicity. Others wrote about it in other forums, blogs and social networking sites. But those were just words: the actions taken by those few who would smash their units and post the pictures and Videos on Youtube was extremely convincing that we were serious about leaving XM totally if ONA were fired after the 30-day suspension. We also had a Billboard but it did not garner the press because it was moving and not static for the slow-moving press to write a story about. In all it all showed to XM that they were making a huge mistake.
To those of you that helped, Thank you.

This is now the pests (not PAC, the Pests) trying to make media spin of the situation because they've suddently realized that O&A aren't going to dedicate a 2 hour break to them talking about the situation.
And O&A still had a job on CBS.

We also had a Billboard but it did not garner the press because it was moving and not static for the slow-moving press to write a story about. In all it all showed to XM that they were making a huge mistake.
To those of you that helped, Thank you.

The talk radio climate was horrible and still is, but it's still wrong to spread a lie to the fans.
Sorry, you didn't change my opinion on that. 100% Fired was never a state O&A existed in.

opie and anthony got suspended?!?
thanks for the heads up

The apology wasn't sincere enough, and the media pressure was on. That's what the suspension was for. Period.
This is now the pests (not PAC, the Pests) trying to make media spin of the situation because they've suddently realized that O&A aren't going to dedicate a 2 hour break to them talking about the situation.
They will never admit that there suspension was not for a censorship issue. There was no media outrage for there apology or really still for the comments on that show with homeless charlie (Didn't O&A say they would never apologize?) thus XM was not caving in.
And yea, they are in full on spin mode. The O&A Fired!!! thread had some classic pest posts.
You...cannot... be serious.
Don't worry he will probably edit that later on tonight like he edited out his response to my quesiton "I thought they wered fired" when he said, "Will you care if it doesn't involve you?"

Yay. This is great. Arguments between two groups of fans who know in their hearts that they are right, but neither side can possibly know for sure or prove they are right because of facts that the general public will likely never know, so no progress is ever made. :wallbash:

Yeah. This really needed to be rehashed again. Not that there's not other threads out there with pages and pages of the same discussion.

After such a congratulatory post like that, you have to wonder if the Pests will commend themselves for a Job well Done when Imus comes back in September.

No one is saying that the reaction the "Fired Lie" caused wasn't a good thing for O&A and didn't start a good ball rolling with the PAC.
But my point was do people not mind being lied to if the outcome is positive? Is that where we are?
I'm not.

I was told this by an extremely trusted source, and not an employee/relative of an XM employee.
Get on the phone, cancel your XM. DO NOT take the 30-day credit - CANCEL it! XM will feel that much more on their bottom line than a 30-day dip.
If XM feels the sting of thousands of people canceling their subs, then there is some sort of a chance!

Holy shit.... still this topic?
Just to clear this up once and for all....
I was TOLD by a RELIABLE SOURCE they were fired, and thats what I posted.
I never told ANYONE to smash their radios, or anything like that, did i?
XM gave everyone free activation, and we are all back and happy.
Maybe the person who told me they were fired had a bigger plan, to get XMs attention and save their jobs... if so, it sucks FOR ME to be made to look bad because of it, but maybe it DID save their jobs... MAYBE they WERE told they were fired, and this WAS the thing that changed the situation?
So, is that bad?

haha I was not even trying to be that tough. I like paul and respect what he does for the show, Norton, and helping spread the word of 202 and XM.
at the same time, i do not think he, or really anyone else besides a Mod or Admin, should be commenting on when a thread should be locked. If you have a problem, PM a mod or Admin and take it up with them. In my opinion, there is nothing really wrong with this thread. It brough up a valid point once we all found out that O&A were not getting fired. This was NOT the website that started the rumor, or put a huge thing on the front page. I am not sure what NFP's main messageboard affiliation is, or if he is a mod or admin somewhere else, but I think rf.net handled the situation very well and kept a civilized discussion about it. this thread is still open for those who want to comment and discuss all of the events of the last 2 months.
NFP in my opinion is always welcome to post on rf.net. he should not feel bad about what happened with the firing message, he was just doing what he thought was right. it was up to everyone else if they wanted to follow his lead and cancel or not.
