Working as NASA (http://www.answers.com/topic/nasa) resident artist
(From her lecture at the and movie presentation at the University of Maryland, College Park (http://www.answers.com/topic/university-of-maryland-college-park-1) on April 4, 2007. ) "So I was working in the studio one day, feeling sorry for myself, when I suddenly got this phone call, and the guy told me I was selected to be the resident artist at NASA. I said, 'Well what does that mean "artist in residence", what can I offer a bunch of scientists?', and he said, 'I don't know either'. Turns out scientists and artists have a lot more in common than one would think. Neither of them knows what is it they're looking for and they both start out with a set of tools and try to come closer towards that certain something."
Yeah.. so I dig her.
I'm sure Bobo appreciates it, at least.

"Born, Never Asked
It was a large room. Full of people. All kinds.
And they had all arrived at the same buidling
at more or less the same time.
And they were all free. And they were all
asking themselves the same question:
What is behind that curtain?
You were born. And so you're free. So happy birthday."
Damn I feel terrible that I missed her presentation. It's my aspiration to be the "Resident artist" @ Home Depot (they call them, "sales associates"...) ha ha ha...
Seriously, I fell in love w/ Laurie Anderson around 1972 when I read an account of an artist (guess who?) who froze the blades of a pair of ice skates into 2 blocks of ice which she would wear out on the street as she played the violin. The performance ended when the blocks of ice had completely melted. She performed this feat all around the world... she is MY HERO!!!

Thanks PB, U made my day w/ this bit of happiness & celebration!!!!!!

Madison Square Garden, Peter Gabriel, So Tour, 1987 i think. Left to Right: Tony Levin, PG, Laurie Anderson, Manu Katche, David Sancious [original E-Street keyboards] David Rhodes. They were performing 'Excellent Birds (This is The Picture) when I snapped this.
Saw her live during the 'Nerve Bible' tour. Wow.
Been in love with her work since the days, of well, freezing skates in ice as Bobo mentioned. Big Science just rules, Mr. Heartbreak is even better, the soundtrack for the concert movie 'Home of The Brave' rocks, and you gotta see that concert, which includes adrian belew on guitar, and an appearence by William S. Burroughs who inspired 'Language is a Virus from Outer Space'
Of course, her tour de force I never got to see, the epic 'United States' concerts in NYC; I have the 4 CD box sets of the shows.
YouTube has some of her PSAs; they rock. I'm too lazy to set up links but she does one of how psychedelic the Star Spagled Banner is, another on the National Debt, one on School Lunches, and an Awesome one on Playboy Bunny Waitresses being exploited.
Why she isnt a gazillion times more famous then she is is beyond me. I guess shes not cliched enough.
Bobo; ever see when she'd take a piece of tape with a recorded vocal phrase on it and put it on the violin bow; and the violin had a tape head, so she could 'play' the piece of tape. And when she put drum triggers all over her body for a drum solo which looks like she pulling a Tyler Durden on herself.
I dont think 'Home of The Brave' or 'Collected Videos' are available on DVD; a shame.

Those routines are GREAT!!! Many times when I saw her perform w/ the tape bow, the recording was of Burroughs saying, "Language is a virus from outer space."
I worked for the United States Pts. 1-4 shows in DC as a tech. One of my shining memories was meeting legendary jazz bagpiper, Rufus Harley, who toured w/ her!!!

Another brilliant & startling piece is when she comes onto the darkened stage, smiles & her teeth are uilluminated from the INSIDE by red diodes. She had a contact mic on her teeth, proceeds to clack them together, & it was so loud, it sounded as if the Earth had cracked!!!

LOVE Laurie. Hearing Earl's Lou Reed story yesterday made me think of the ice-skates -violin-playing that Bobo mentioned- they are the world's coolest couple. Lou and Laurie, not Laurie and Bobo. Yet.
Just enjoyed her performance in Portland last Feb- Spouse was surprised that we were on the front row, because evidently did not understand the level of my Laurie worship and ninja ticket-buying skills. She has stripped down from previous shows to storytelling and violin playing, with a minimum of extra clutter. She dressed like a little Buddhist monk and told stories about her stint as N.A.S.A.'s artist in residence, and about the 10 day walks she's taken with her rat terrier, and about space and time and nature and owls and Thomas Pynchon.
And I just played Example #22 to annoy the goths at Convergence 13 on Memorial day! The end.

Did she tell the meeting w/ Pynchon about Gravity's Rainbow Musical story???
I'll tell it quick, I am not entirely sure it's true, but it's very funny...
Laurie Anderson wants to do a musical theater piece based on Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. After a tremendous amount of effort on her part she was granted a meeting w/ Pynchon, not an easy thing to do. She explained her concept for this Gravity's Rainbow, the Musical project which met w/ Pynchon's wholehearted approval w/ the proviso that ALL THE MUSIC for the production be played on the BANJO!!! HA HA HA!!!
For about a year now, I have been writing to Ms. Anderson to pitch myself as the banjo player for this production. It would be sheer bliss...

Let's see. Uh, it was on an island. And there was this snake. And the snake had legs. And he could walk all around the island. Yes. That's true. A snake with legs. And the man and the woman were on the island too. And they were not very smart. But they were happy as clams. Yes.
Let's see. Uh...then one evening the snake was walking about in the garden and he was talking to himself and he saw the woman and they started to talk. And they became friends. Very good friends. And the woman liked the snake very much. Because when he talked, he make little noises with his tongue, and his long tongue was lightly licking about his lips. Like there was a fire inside his mouth and the flame would come dancing out of his mouth. And this woman liked this very much. And after that, she was bored with the man. Because no matter what happened, he was always as happy as a clam.
What did the snake say? Yes! What was he saying? OK. I will tell you. The snake told her things about the world. He told her about the time there was a big typhoon on the island and all the sharks came out of the water. Yes. They came out of the water and they walked right into your house with their big white teeth. And the woman heard these things. And she was in love. And the man came out and said: We have to go now! And the woman did not want to go. Because she was a hothead. Because she was a woman in love. Anyway, we got into their boat and left the island. But they never stayed anywhere very long. Because the woman was restless. She was a hothead. She was a woman in love.
And this is not a story people tell. It is something I know myself. And when I do my job, I am thinking about these things. Because when I do my job, that is what I think about.
Oooo la la la. Yeah La La La. Voici. Voila'. Here. And there. Ooo la la la. Oh yes. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Oooo la la la. Oooo. Oh yeah. La la la. La la. Voici. Voila'. la la. Here it is. There it is. La la. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Ah!
Comme ci, comme ca. Ah! Niether here nor there. Voila. Voila. There. There. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Attends! Attends! Attends! Wait! Wait! Wait! Attends! Attends! Attends! Wait! Wait! Wait! Ecoute. Ecoute. Ecoute. Listen. Listen. Listen. Ooooo la la la la. Ooooo. Oh yeah. Ooo la la la la. Oh yeah. Yeah. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Voici le langage dans mon coeur.
This is the language of my heart. Oooo la la. Oooo. Oh yeah. Voici le langage de l'amour. This is the language of love. Voici le langage dans mon coeur. This is the language of my heart. Voici le langage dans mon coeur. This is the language of my heart.

Good evening.
This is your Captain.
We are about to attempt a crash landing.
Please extinuish all cigarettes.
Place your tray tables in their upright, locked position.
Your Captain says: Put your head on your knees. Your Captain says: Put your head on your hands. Captain says: Put your hands on your head.
Put your hands on your hips.
Heh heh.
This is your Captain-and we are going down.
We are all going down, together.
And I said: Uh oh.
This is gonna be some day.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
Uh-this is your Captain again.
You know, I've got a funny feeling
I've seen this all before.
Why?
Cause I'm a caveman.
Why?
Cause I've got eyes in the back of my head.
Why?
It's the heat.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.
Put your hands over your eyes.
Jump out of the plane.
There is no pilot.
You are not alone.
Standby.
This is the time.
And this is the
record of the time.
This is the time.
And this is the record of the time.

I used to have a weird album. It was a double album with Anderson, William S. Burroughs, and a poet whose name escapes me. Each artist had one side of the set. The fourth side had all three. Here's the kicker... There were three separate grooves on the fourth side. One time, you'd put down the stylus and hear Burroughs. The next time, it might be Anderson or the other guy. It was really freaky!

Part of the Giorno Poetry Series, all great albums, this one's worth like $200-300 now!!! John Giorno was Bryon Gysin's lover, Bryon Gysin taught William S. Burroughs the "cut-up" technique & was his best friend on Earth!!!

I knew I could count you, Bobo! I have no idea what happened to mine. It probably wouldn't be worth much, though. Some of my friends and I would put on side 4 and tap the stylus every few seconds. I guess you could call that cut up listening. It was all great fun!

I've told this story at least 1000 times. It' s my "cool" New York story.
I worked in a little store in Chelsea in the early 90s. We were one block north of the original Barneys. Lots of celebrities would come in. We'd never make a big deal over them. Then one day Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed came in. I was completely beside myself. The woman I worked with had no idea who they were; she only knew the soap stars who came in.
Laurie needed a pair of gym shorts. I helped her out. Lou said, "Laurie, I'm going out to smoke a cigarette."
She was SO nice. I chose to say nothing to her as a fan.
I also sold a sports bra to Suzanne Vega. 34B.

very cool stuff Alice! my highlight is shaking Iggy Pop's hand and getting his autograph in an airport
I also stood next to Chubby Checker in the Russo Diner in Hoboken. I turned around in line while waiting to pay for my breakfast sandwich and he's right next to me waiting to pay for his order. I just left him alone...
