View Full Version : New Job! And A Question....

After carefully considering the offers I received from the companies I interviewed with last week I've made a decision.

I'm leaving my current place of employment and starting anew. I went with a fairly new company that is an up-and-comer and since they've been unable to establish any kind of sales base in my territory they were pretty hot for me. They made the best offer of all 3 places I went to and I'm pretty excited about building up a customer base once again.

They're also giving me 2 additional territories to sell to exclusively and I'll draw commission on sales in all three counties. Company car, company cell phone, and best of all...I won't be lugging the shit around! I'm strictly a sales rep, and I won't have to deliver the crap also, like I do with my present job.

Here's my question to you all, though. My current employer is famous for telling people to clean out their desk and leave immediately when they give their 2 weeks notice. (I suppose they don't want their sales reps spending their last days there telling their customers that they're going elsewhere.) Should I do the right thing and give my 2 weeks notice, or just blow out of there with a hearty "FUCK YOU...I QUIT!" next Friday?

Give notice. Always go out with class, you may never know when you might need to go back.

If they're in the habit of dropping people when they give their notice I would just clear out now.

Congrats bud, hope the new job works out great.

Do the right thing. There might have been other shit going on that you didn't know about with the people who were kicked out. Never burn any bridges, companies open and close every day. Your new place could be next.

Especially if they're overpaying their employees!

Are you cool with the managers? Can you tiptoe around it? I'd try to give advice, but sales is a completely different world. It is the toughest job in the world.

First of all, Congrats!! It sounds like you made the right move. (I wish I had the stones)

As for the 2 weeks, it is a professional courtesy. Offer the 2 weeks, and let the prick decide whether he wants it or not.
Best of luck to you. I hope I can still meet you at Al's!!

if you give two weeks and they send you home the company is obligated to pay you

1st before you do anything, make a copy of all your contacts and old emails, as well as files you may want to use at the new place. bring that home. the next day, give 2 weeks. if they kick you out, you will still get paid for the 2 weeks. I would hand in a written letter so no one can twist your words and say you did not give the notice.

Congrats, my dear!!!!!! I am very happy to hear about this!! you are one of the hardest working people i know and there is no one that deserves this more than you!!!!

as for your employer, you know what to do. give your two weeks notice. you are too classy to do it the other way. whatever they decide, so be it. Just know you did it the right way, they cant hold that against you.

Congratulations on the new gig! Sounds like you made a great decision.

As for the two weeks question, are you still in the same field with the new job? I seem to remember you saying in another thread that your current company is buying up its competitors.

If that's the case, give your two weeks. You may wind up working for them again, and you don't want them to use that against you and label you a "redundancy."

I personally wouldn't burn the bridge but it really depends on your relationship with your current employer and the people there. Do you respect them? Do you like them? Would you ever go back to them if the new company you're going to work for went down somehow? Things that make you go "hmm". Either way, good luck.

Gvac,
As long as I have known you on this board, you have been nothing but class. Don't change your ways to stick it to the man. You will be able to sleep at night knowing you did the right thing. Burning bridges is a bitch. Plus, Im sure you new employer would take you on right away.

Congrats sweetie, does this mean you can finally be my sugar daddy

Gvac.... I know exactly what you are going thru right now. My industry is the same. We gave our notice yesterday and today was hostile work day #1. The other 2 girls wand to book it right now, but me I am holding out. If for no other reason then to make our boss squirm like a bug! Call me a bitch, but I am staying the full time if I can and like oh_kee_pa said they are obligated to pay you out if they terminate you when you give them notice. I think thats the reason our boss didn't make us leave because if we keep working we are making her money but if she tells us to leave she is obligated to pay us regardless and that costs her money.

Best of luck budday ....you know what you need to do!

Congrats Greg!

I agree with the others: give EXACTLY 2 weeks notice. That's 10 work days.

Congrats. You give your notice, then leave it up to them. Make it clear that if they tell you to leave on the spot that you expect to be paid for the two weeks and it is them that are letting you go.

Yeah, definitely give your notice.

Why make any sort of unnecessary hassle for yourself?

And, congrats on the new gig.

What my dad use to do when people gave 2 week notice was tell them to leave now and pay them for their 2 weeks.

I say you give your 2 weeks notice and then its their choice to let you go or not.
Most of the companies I have dealt have let me stay for the 2 weeks or paid me for 2 weeks and told me to leave now.

Congratulations Greg

Just be yourself and act with the grace you have always had. The written notice is a definite if for nothing else then to protect your reputation. Once you do that it is up to the company if you remain. Just get the files that are your property the day before you hand in notice .

Thank you one and all for the kind words and well wishes. I guess it was always my intention to "do the right thing" even though the company I work for never does.

Here's another question, though - I have a couple of vacation days left. Do they have to pay me for them or should I use 'em up before I give my notice?

BoondockSaint
06-15-2007, 03:12 PM
I doubt they would have to pay you for them since it is your choice to leave.

When I left my last job they had to pay for them since I earned them...and it was a sweet chunck of change.

It may be different if your company has a "use or lose policy".

Thanks to everyone for the input and congratulatory posts; it means lot.

Since my employer has a policy of letting everyone go the second they give their two weeks notice, I've used up all of my vacation time and sick days and I'm giving my notice when I go in this morning.

If they do indeed tell me to leave, I'm heading to my new place of work to fill out all of the paperwork so I can start Monday morning.

With any luck, I'll be home by noon!

best of luck! my one big regret when leaving my job 2 years ago was not using up all my sick days and then not getting paid out for them. shoulda called out everyday for the last week. fuckers.
