This has come up before. The military using computers to guard their bases. Japanese robots looking after the elderly.

But one day, when we are fighting them in the streets, someone will say generations from now, the warning signs were there. Whether that someone will be a Borg like entity inhabting this planet or it will be someone hiding out on an apocalyptic wasteland trying to find his next meal while avoiding machine patrols... remains to be seen.

But, NASA just announced a partnership with the M2Mi Corporation (http://appel.nasa.gov/askoce/node/578) to develop intelligent machines that will be able to "mind meld" with each other, make intelligent choices, and communicate with each other, all without human intervention.

From the M2Mi Corporation (http://www.m2mi.com/company.html) website:

m2mi Corp is focused on unlocking the inherent value of M2M technology via intelligence-enabled Telemetry processing and optimized-machine behavior. m2mi's solutions aim at achieving machine independence and eliminating the need for human intervention.

And so it begins...

All kidding aside, shouldn't SOME human intervention remain?

me personally im getting tired of this boring mundane life and would love it if aliens did exist and came to attack earth or a skynet/terminator type future would happen

right now its just wake up go to work so you can make money to pay bills and buy food so you can stay alive and keep the daily process going

if i were rich enough to not have to work then i could travel the world and see all the cool shit but if i had no job then i would get to see everything relatively quickly and then what ??

go back to the same places again ??? i'd be all up for a star trek type mission, i dont need to come back to earth, i'd just travel around and see all the cool shit in other galaxies, obviously if we found a way to do this and have food and water for the ride

Killer Military Robots Pose Latest Threat To Humanity, Robotics Expert Warns!

A robotics expert at the University of Sheffield has issued stark warnings over the threat posed to humanity by new robot weapons being developed by powers worldwide. (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/02/080226213451.htm)

In a keynote address to the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Professor Noel Sharkey, from the University's Department of Computer Science, expressed his concerns that we are beginning to see the first steps towards an international robot arms race. He will warn that it may not be long before robots become a standard terrorist weapon to replace the suicide bomber.

And that fight will start in the streets of Atlanta.

Homemade robotic vigilante patrols in Atlanta (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24259204/)

Cars passing O'Terrill's pub screech to a halt at the sight of a 300-pound, waist-high robot marked "SECURITY" rolling through downtown long after dark.

The regulars hardly glance outside. They've seen bar owner Rufus Terrill's invention on patrol before — its bright red lights and even brighter spotlight blazing, infrared video camera filming and water cannon at the ready in the spinning turret on top.

Military use of robots increases (http://news-info.wustl.edu/tips/page/normal/12080.html)

Robots in the military are no longer the stuff of science fiction. They have left the movie screen and entered the battlefield. Washington University in St. Louis's Doug Few and Bill Smart are on the cutting edge of this new wave of technology. Few and Smart report that the military goal is to have approximately 30% of the Army comprised of robotic forces by approximately 2020.

Robots are already finding a place among deployed troops. There are unmanned aerial vehicles and ground robots for explosives detection. Robotics advancements do, however, raise new ethical questions, such as where to place the blame if a robot kills someone. Nevertheless, as the technology progresses, more robots are being sent into battle first. The mangled Packbot on display at iRobot is just one such example of a fortunate casualty.

If? More like, WHEN.

War Against Robots: the new entrepreneurial frontier (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/richard_tyler/blog/2008/09/15/war_against_robots_the_new_entrepreneurial_frontie r)

One of Britain's most prolific young entrepreneurs is launching a new business called War Against Robots, or WAR Defence for short.

His business, WAR Defence claims to be developing products in three major areas: weapons systems against robots, detection and monitoring of robotic entities and ‘robo-viruses'. (Good grief!).

Apparently, Way likes robots but doesn't want them to take over our lives.

He thinks it is "critical that we begin talking now about the long-term ethical implications the robot revolution will surely bring".

He continues: "The use of robotics in the military is on the up and, although the decision to take human life is currently still taken by another human, before long such decisions will be made up complex mathematical and logical rules programmed within a robot."

"Potentially the consequences of a computer crashing could be devastating. Hence, robotic defence is not just necessary for tackling combatants, but potentially for making sure we have control over our own weaponry."

Your Remote-Controlled Robot Voyeur Army Has Arrived (http://io9.com/5054563/your-remote+controlled-robot-voyeur-army-has-arrived)

You're on vacation, but you still want to spy on what your roommates are doing in your house. Or maybe you just want to be sure your boyfriend remember to feed your cats. Either way, you're in luck with the new Spykee robot (pictured), a robot that's remote-controlled via internet phone service Skype. That means you can call your robot from anywhere in the world, guide it around your house, and see what it sees.

The Spykee site says, enticingly, that you can:

Watch video of your own home from anywhere in the world while the the Rovio mobile spy robot patrols your home automatically for you while you're away.
Or you could even watch your home while you're not away, just to make sure nobody is doing "bad things" down the hall. The Spykee lets you talk to the people you see in your house via Skype, which should provide hours of fun when people assume the robot itself is talking to them. Plus, you can set up a system where the robot will look for motion, snap a photo, and send it to you via e-mail. That's a great feature for bedrooms, if you know what I mean. Because bedrooms have a lot of valuables in them that you might want your robot to guard for you! Right?

Oh, and did I mention you can add on to the robot with legos? I'm so glad the future has brought us a lego-based voyeuristic robot. Can HAL9000 really be far behind?

I bolded that last part for JustJon... now all those lego lazers and cannons you've built can come to fruition!

Did. (http://io9.com/5016092/sarah-connor-has-failed-++-the-british-just-built-skynet)

With the launch of a new communications satellite, the British military has completed a highly advanced network that will allow robotic military units to be controlled at long range. Sound vaguely familiar? They actually named the thing Skynet. When the T-1000s come knocking, keep an eye out for the "Made in UK" sticker. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7451867.stm)

"Skynet 5 is about two-and-a-half-times more capable than the previous system, and it also gives us the ability to use not just voice communication but also data communication," explains Patrick Wood from spacecraft manufacturer EADS Astrium.

"So, computers can talk directly to computers, as well giving us pictures and real-time video images."

Let's see... what else.... oh, yea... Cyberdyne. A company that actually exists that is creating cyborg limbs.

If your poor, mistreated plant had legs, it would walk itself in front of the sun and out from the dank corner that it sits, slowly drying up and dying. Unfortunately for your plant, evolution hasn't decided that legs are a priority for plants. Fortunately for it, however, we live in the age of robots, so you can just go ahead and finish the job that evolution started.

The signs are right in front of us.

Scientists debate a robot war (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29142213/)

In the 1921 play that invented the word "robot" — Czech writer Karel Capek's "Rossum's Universal Robots" — mechanical, highly intelligent slaves mount a revolt and kill all humans but one.

some 40 countries are making military robots. The motive: reduced casualties. "When a robot dies, you don't have to write a letter to its mother," Singer quotes one unit commander as saying.

Military robots are already being built with greater endurance, firepower, precision and — for the moment, submissiveness — than human soldiers. The trend is to make them more autonomous, able to take decisions according to built-in commands, unmoved by fear, pity, revenge or other human emotion.

Whether they can or should be endowed with a system of ethics is controversial. How to tell a ragged soldier from a ragged civilian?

Scientists foresee the day when robots will develop what is called "strong AI" — high level artificial intelligence — and use it to reproduce themselves without human intervention. Singer quotes Vernon Vinge, mathematician, computer scientist and science fiction writer, as predicting more than 15 years ago: "Within the next 30 years, we will have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Shortly thereafter, the human era will be ended."

Military’s killer robots must learn warrior code (http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/article5741334.ece)

Autonomous military robots that will fight future wars must be programmed to live by a strict warrior code or the world risks untold atrocities at their steely hands.

The stark warning – which includes discussion of a Terminator-style scenario in which robots turn on their human masters – is issued in a hefty report funded by and prepared for the US Navy’s high-tech and secretive Office of Naval Research.

The Navy knows what's up! They'll be able to fight them from the sea.

A laboratory robot developed by Aberystwyth University and the University of Cambridge in the UK has become the first robot to make a scientific discovery without human help.

This robot, called Adam, is capable of generating its own hypotheses and running experiments to test them. Adam has been studying the genetics of yeast and has made new discoveries by doing the grunt lab work normally conducted by graduate students.

Freeing people from arduous lab work and autonomously advancing human knowledge is a promising robotic contribution.

If that sounds too unrealistic, what about the prospect of "a robotic team of football players [taking] on the human World Cup champions" and winning, all by 2050? As reported by AFP and published at Breitbart.com, Osaka University professor Minoru Asada has high aspirations for his team of robotics experts, which first presented their project, Child-robot with Biomimetic Body (AKA CB2), in 2007. They've made good progress, claiming their baby Terminator is "slowly developing social skills by interacting with humans and watching their facial expressions, mimicking a mother-baby relationship." We've embedded a video below of the baby robot in action, which more closely resembles the Star-Child in 2001: A Space Odyssey than The Terminator. Creepy or cool?

This past weekend, robotics experts joined Battlestar Galactica's President Roslin and Colonel Tigh, for the World Science Festival panel, "Cyborgs on the Horizon." They explained all about the inevitable robot uprising, and screened new Plan clips. (http://io9.com/5291709/robotics-scientists-and-bsg-cast-members-agree-were-all-doomed)

Each scientist showed off the latest robotic wares. Hod Lipson screened a video of a robot that leaned how to become self-aware of its own legs and creepily, over time, learned how to flail itself into a walk. And then, when they ripped off one of it's legs, it limped. A chill swept throughout the audience, and that was just the beginning. Hod went on to talk about how they no longer program robots to think or do tasks, the robots learn how to think basically for themselves, and are slowly becoming self-aware. Here's some of the video footage from the night, which Hod had shown in a previous lecture as well:

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lMkHYE9-R0A&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lMkHYE9-R0A&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Kevin Warwick, meanwhile, is a real cyborg: he's implanted a chip into his brain, so he could put his nervous system on the Internet. The chip also allows him to communicate to his wife via neurosignals, becuase she's also implanted. Besides trying to persuade the audience to upgraide their "simple 5 senses," he's a cyborg pretty intent on letting us all know that we're doomed, Skynet style. "You won't be able to switch it off if it [the robot in question] gets too scary. Think of the internet, it's everywhere. You cannot simply switch that off." Then he remarked that it would be pretty naive if we thought we could switch off a superior intelligence, if it ever goes that far.

Impressed and alarmed by advances in artificial intelligence, a group of computer scientists is debating whether there should be limits on research that might lead to loss of human control over computer-based systems that carry a growing share of society’s workload, from waging war to chatting with customers on the phone.

Their concern is that further advances could create profound social disruptions and even have dangerous consequences.

Beware march of the killer robots, expert warns (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article6737461.ece)

British expert is urging international action to curb the use of military robot tanks and aircraft.

Noel Sharkey, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Sheffield, said drones that could decide when and who to kill were almost here and would lead to a rapid rise in civilian casualties.

US drones, such as the Predator and Reaper, are being armed with cluster bombs and missiles and robot tanks such as the Talon Sword are armed with machine guns and grenade launchers. Besides Britain and the US, another 43 countries have programmes to develop military robots.

Professor Sharkey said that the increased deployment of automated military technology was already creating a culture of armchair warfare.

Well, Maharbiz and his colleagues at the University of California Berkeley have taken the next step and taken their cyborg beetles out for a wireless flight. The experiment is funded by DARPA in the hopes of eventually creating a fully remote controlled spy insect that could listen in to conversations or possibly find missing people after a disaster.

Interesting artcle about the current state of robotics...

http://www.niemanwatchdog.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=ask_this.view&askthisid=00440

Bill Gates has described robotics as being, right now, where computers were around 1980. If this is the case, think how the computer has reshaped everything from our economy to our social relationships and “friendships” to how we plan wars and even fight them

Other scientists make the parallel of robotics being much like the atomic bomb, a cutting-edge technology that we may one day regret building.

If this is a growing industry that is also crucial to national security, how will America fare -- especially given that 43 other countries are also working in this field? The state of our manufacturing economy and the state of science and mathematics education in our schools don’t augur well for our dominance in this area. What would it mean to have soldiers whose hardware increasingly says “Made in China” and whose software increasingly is being written by someone in India?

Steven Spielberg May Summon the ROBOPOCALYPSE (http://www.collider.com/2010/03/12/steven-spielberg-may-summon-the-robopocalypse/)

Steven Spielberg may lead the robot uprising and make his next movie Robopocalypse. Deadline reports that after the fizzled attempts to remake Harvey or adapt the Matt Helm books, Spielberg may now have his sights set on Drew Goddard’s (Cloverfield) adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s comic how-to guide about the human race’s attempt to survive an apocalyptic robot uprising (which is redundant; I’m pretty sure all robot uprisings result in apocalypse).

A future in which robots help around the home could prove harmful to humans, suggests a study. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/10102398.stm)

German researchers studied what happens in accidents involving robots using sharp tools alongside humans.

They used a robot arm holding a variety of bladed tools programmed to strike test substances that mimic soft tissue.

In some cases, the researchers found, the robots managed to accidentally inflict wounds that would prove "lethal".

Great.

Just great.

Apparently, scientists don't watch science fiction films. Otherwise, why would they build a robot that not only can operate a firearm, but systematically learns to improve its aim?

Researchers at the Italian Institute of Technology have build the iCub, an adorably offensive little robot—what with its totally PC Native American headdress—equipped with a bow, arrow and a computer algorithm called ARCHER, which stands for Augmented Reward Chained Regression. ARCHER allows the iCub to use a camera to process the bull's-eye image, analyze failed attempts and adjust angle, force or trajectory to compensate.

These metal son of a bitches are already getting to our kids.

The University tested 64 18-month-olds, as they sat on their parents’ laps. The children faced a remote-controlled robot and researcher Rechele Brooks. The woman and the robot would then act out a 90-second skit during which the robot was treated as a child. After, the babies (and parents) were left alone with the robot, which attempted to get the babies attention through beeps and movement before looking at a nearby toy. In more than 80-percent of cases, the babies followed the gaze of the robot, as if it were human. This is important because at this age children can differentiate between the movement of an inanimate object and a person. And seeing the social interaction with the researcher seemed to tell the babies that this robot was more than just a metal box.

Researchers at Toshiba have developed a talking robot that functions as a voice-operated universal remote control for multiple home appliances. The 2.3 kilogram (5 lb), 21 x 27 centimeter (8 x 11 in) prototype robot, named ApriPoko, learns how to operate various remote controls by watching and asking questions. ApriPoko sits in the living room and waits for you to use a remote control. When its sensors detect infrared rays emitted by a remote, the robot speaks up: "What did you just do?" it asks. Tell ApriPoko what you did ("I turned on the stereo" or "I changed to channel 321," for example), and it commits the details to memory. Then, next time you want to turn on the stereo or change the channel, simply tell ApriPoko and it transmits the appropriate IR signal directly to the device. The prototype robot is still in the development and testing phase, but Toshiba hopes to have a viable product soon.

<H1 class=test1>Japan may send chatty humanoid tweet-bot to space (http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Japan-may-send-chatty-apf-2190521386.html?x=0&.v=1)

Japan's space agency is considering putting a talking humanoid robot on the International Space Station to watch the mission while astronauts are asleep, monitor their health and stress levels and communicate to Earth through the microblogging site Twitter.

Japan's space agency JAXA announced this week that it is looking at a plan to send a humanoid robot to the space station in 2013 that could communicate with the ground through Twitter -- primarily feeding photos, rather than original ideas -- and provide astronauts with "comfort and companionship."

Non-Human DJ Gets Radio Gig

A non-human DJ will take to the airwaves next week in San Antonio, Texas, in what may mark another step on the path that puts flesh-and-blood radio personalities out of a job.

The DJ is an artificial intelligence program called Denise, who was built by Guile 3D Studio to serve as a virtual assistant to answer phone calls, check email, conduct Web searches and make appointments, among other tasks.
