I wonder if it is symptomatic of a deeper issue of the social fabric - maybe of people being too self-absorbed to pay attention to each other's welfare. Hmmm.

The mom is 20 years old, old enough to be mindful of her responsibilities to herself and her child. What causes a parent to forget about the presence of their child? I do not have kids yet, but when I am with my nieces (1 and 2.5 years old) or other kids, I am accutely aware of every move they make, where they are, when they sleep and wake, what they try to ingest, etc.

I cannot imagine just forgetting that my infant was asleep in the back of the car. What are the pressing issues or distractions that might cause you to forget about your kid and his or her well-being? I cannot think of single one.
