So we woke up the other day to the sound of rushing water....
A pipe had burst in a storage room in our finished basement. The water quickly filled the entire 800sq ft basement 4-6 inches deep... I am not exaggerating... Everything in the storage room, as well as anything on the floor or on a low shelf is destroyed... 2 computers, a classic Nintendo system, 2 couches, an entertainment center... I can go on and on...
The sheetrock has to be replaced up to 3 ft up, the tile floor will be coming up... I can go on and on...
The basement was my fortress of solitude... Many of the books I read and the notebooks I keep are just ruined... It sucks Bad....
For their part, the insurance company has been great... They already have a pod storage unit on order, so we can start tearing the basement apart..... The appaiser estimated a $25,000 claim when it's all over...

This really makes me feel for people in Louisiana that had 12 ft of water in their houses... I couldn't take that shit... I would just walk away.... Having to go through 6 inches of waterlogged stuff is too much....

Ever since I've heard these stories about people's basements flooding, I've made sure that I keep everything that means something in the tough, durable (and waterproof) Rubbermaid roughneck containers. Seeing Hottub's scared the heck out of me.

Now everything in the basement is neatly stacked, and everything that's irreplacable is at least 4 feet off the floor in a waterproof container.

Yeah, and those poor people in Louisiana got screwed by the insurance company since most insurance companies claimed the damage was not done by the hurricane but by flooding and unless you had flood insurance, you were screwed.
