It's not finished yet but the existing structure is already the tallest building in the world. It's scheduled to be finished next year. Looks pretty cool.

I may have to go back and check it out.

I'm waiting for the UAE's spaceport:

Let me ask this to some of the posters more knowledgeable about the Middle East. What are they going to do with all this crap when they run out of oil?

That's the point with UAE - they don't have the oil wealth that other Gulf countries do so all this "Arab Las Vegas"/"Corporate Disneyland" idea is is a way to diversify the economy so they won't need to "living in tents out here in the desert chopping each other's heads off" when the oil runs out. All they're doing really is following the Hong Kong/Singapore/Kuala Lumpur model of rapid development by enticing massive corporate investments. And it's working.

But that thing does look like the elbow end of the original Terminator's arm that was presrved at Cyberdine. What do you suppose they're up to over there?

Exactly. It started with Bahrain where their oil ran out first. They decided to concentrate on turning the Kingdom into a financial center. They promoted the Kingdom, rightly, as a very tolerant Islamic country in order to attract businesses and banks. Now Manama is home to banks from all over the world. Also, they let our Navy set up a huge base with affords them security and steady income.

Qatar has the world's largest supply of natural gas and that is fueling (pun intended) development here almost on par with Dubai's. Doha's skyline is like Dubai's: cranes and buildings under construction.

The UAE still has some gas and oil reserves, I believe, so they still haven't gone bone dry yet. Like Yerdaddy said, they realized tourism was the best way to diversify the economy. My guess is that Oman will start to do the same. From what I've heard, it's a hidden gem over here.

I've spent time in the UAE, Bahrain, and Oman. All three are totally not what you would think of in terms of Mid-East countries. The architecture, camels, and of course brown people are all there but they are very open and "westernized" with resorts, nightclubs, and shopping malls. I really liked it over there and Muscat will always be one of my favorite places of all time.

Yeah. Technically they are "spires" on the Petronas while the Sears Tower has antenna and for some reason whatever organization that determines which building is the tallest counts spires and not antennas. It's stupid but an old debate now because this building will be so big it will more than dwarf any building plus its antenna. It'll be taller than the CN Tower too.

They'd have to build two: one for singles and one for families. I'm not joking about that.

The lesson I learned living in the Kingdom was that "if it's fun, it's haram (forbidden)".

They are in the process of building another one in Philly. It's going to end up being the biggest one in the city. I go there every couple of months and it just recently began to poke it's way up above the skyline.

I think they know how tall it's going to be--they're just not saying. Didn't the same thing happen with the empire state building--they kept the spire inside because they were competing with the chrysler building to be the tallest, and they put the spire on at the last possible moment so Chysler couldn't make his taller.

If it's ugly, there are Americans to blame. Folks in Dubai only use American architects (and Engineers).

that didn't take long. tourists standed in elevator for almost an hour.

when they announced this building i wondered what the emergency procedures would be if they had to evacuate. i would never be able to work or live in a big building.
