View Full Version : Earl's Fate?

So...with the big meeting happening today, what is Earl's fate? It seems like there was a mixed outlook on the show today. With the meeting being pegged as "uncomfortable". He has stated that he wants to stay on in some capacity, but with a limited budget and was have to assume the need to hire a new Exec. Producer...will he get the axe? I like Earl but I don't know if his new "part guy" persona has legs...
What say you, o faithful listeners?

He's the only black guy working on the show, he'll still be there on Monday.

I think he may still be with the company, but not necessarily with the show. I can see them demoting Earl and he either accepts a "lesser" role with Ron & Fez or XM transfers him to a music channel.
However, I agree that they won't toss him altogether; not in a corporate, PC environment.

If you start hearing a lot of Fishbone and In Living Color on Squizz you know where they sent him...

what's the over/under on total number of times he says "no, I mean" during the meeting?

It won't be Squizz, that channel is run from DC. Lord knows Earl won't move away from NYC.
Of course his reticence to move out of New York may force him to quit XM altogether - the majority of the XM channels/jobs are based out of DC. They might offer him an "all or nothing" gig in DC that he will refuse.

I'm willing to bet that it will be a 1:1 ratio with the number of times he opens his mouth.
I'm getting tired of Earl. Not interesting enough for intelligent radio, not competent enough for dynamic radio, not shameless enough for stuntboy radio, and not funny enough.
It would be great though if they pull off some insane face move with him. I can't imagine how, at this point.

The ideal will be Earl stays on, but not as EP. I don't see any of these guys as EP material. The best would be Al Dukes behind the scenes, but I don't want to bring back on air AL.

It's a tough call, during music discussions Earl adds a lot of insight but he doesn't have the mouthpiece to be on the air often. I agree with the ideas that he could add to the show. Hearing Ronnie berate him used to be funny, but no I just feel bad. You can tell Earl is a decent enough guy, but his lack of backbone is disturbing.
In any event, the rapidly disintegrating Earl situation has been interesting radio and I will be interested to hear how it pans out tomorrow.
My prediction: Earl will be with the show tomorrow, but out within 60 days in place of Billy Staples. I haven't been listening to Ron and Fez prior to XM but the generally vibe regarding Billy seems to be positive so he's my prediction.

if he is gone, Earls Hog is going to have to becomes Dave's Taint.

not to be rude, but yeah, you obviously weren't listening before xm
Billy was a glorified PHONE SCREENER, and that's it.
There's no way the word "Executive" will ever be in front of the name "billy staples"
There's a better chance of east side dave being EP, and at least billy realized that shit isn't food.....
Al was horrible as well, but he was great on air, but i'm guessing he may have learned something since leaving the show, i mean he was the man that said give aways and giving prizes doesn't work on radio.........

I actually think AL was the best off air producer. I was pretty tired of the on air AL after a while though.

we have really beat this issue into the ground. Plain and simple Earl needs to go. He doesnt do much for the show; other than screw up, so "ahhh...no...ahhh" studder on the air, and lie to cover up his short comings. I hope this meeting ends with this "pack up your shit from the home you made in our studio, and get out." I dont know who could take over the position hat is the tough question. Party's over party guy..he sucks.

So everyone is correct when they say I have not listened to pre-XM show. I really don't have much of an idea of who's better between Billy Staples and Al Dukes. It just seems like Billy has less going on these days (I think Al's at 92.3, correct) so I figured he might be more likely to join.
Another point, I am really starting to feel like a rube, because as some of you hear have pointed out, Ron/Earl seem to be in constant conflict but nothing ever changes. Is this only a source of something to talk about on-air? What say you, o faithful listeners?

Really? I always thought he preformed great in both rolls. The guy was hilarious on air.

Towards the end, we already knew all his quirks, and his dryness had become more irritating than funny. I liked AL, but we've been there, we need a new onion to peel layers off. AL, on air offers nothing new.

Exactamundo realization for this 1 year fan.
This has long stopped making sense ( btw- the Patton/Life during wartime opener was probably one of the best ever).
I kinda understand the been-there-done-that responses to the Al Dukes, Billy Staples suggestions.
It would probably be too much of a change, but i wonder how introducing an intelligent, sophisticamated, witty producer would play out ?
Maybe that is too close to the oft-suggested guest-comedian spots (ala O+A+N)?

That's a trifecta that will be hard to find...Earl is intelligent. Dave is, well, Dave (which is a good thing, don't get me wrong). Billy was witty, I guess, but not so sophisticamated.
Hell, I'd like a change of careers myself...I'd give it a try but alas I lack in the witty department. I'm simply an unfunny ass.
..but enough about me.
Personally I like Earl, I just wish he'd be more specific with his answers and be more organized. Liking him, it's painful to hear him get killed on the air every day.

That's not a bad idea, were Earl ever to vacate his role. Given that I can always hear him laughing in the studio during O&A, I take it he's gotten even closer to them. Prying him away from O&A would be a challenge, but I think he'd be great.
