Being a Democracy doesn't mean we don't have to do stuff. We have to pay taxes, we have to sign up for Selective Service, we have to go to school, we have to follow State and Federal laws, etc.

Of course there will be exemptions or exceptions, like there are for anything, but there is nothing wrong or illegal with creating a Service Program for America's youth.

since we have evolved our technology, we should be able to afford a certain amount of protection to troops, like body armor and armored vehicals ect.....yes, troops die in war, no way around it, but when we send our boys and girls out there, in substandard armored vehicals, to confront IED's and RPG's they have every right.

Im wouldnt go in b/c i have a hard on to kill some one, or to be shot at. for some people there is an instilled sense of duty to this country, and thats why they join the service. My brother is in has done 1 tour or Iraq with an extention to 18 months, and he is going back after christmas. I feel bad that you feel this is a an "oil war" I think that we did the right thing by going over and trying to install democracy.

How can you be pro-war and then say you have a hard time killing people?? That makes no sense.

and why should we try to instill democracy into a 3rd world country?? All they know is killing each other and living like savages. They have been living like this for thousands of years. Stop with the democracy argument. It's about oil. Period.

Why? Because I am not a bang-bang shoot-em-up hick? Please give me an example??

I really can't cite any examples. I just read a few of your posts and thought you had the general feel of a dirty hippie.

My take on this war is this. I think we are doing it for two reasons. As PR for the world to show that we will try to liberate/help a musilm region and bring it peace and stability. If we were to accomplish that it would be one of the greatest things we've done in recent history.

Secondly, if we can't bring peace to the region at least we gave the fundamentalist that want to attack us a place to fight and it's not on our soil.

If it was all about oil, why don't we have any?

I didn't say we didn't have to do stuff, just manditory military. There are enough people in the country to keep the military going.

OK, then I think you misunderstood my point. Not mandatory Military service, but a program of mandatory "Social" service. Kind of like the Alphabet Projects the government created during the depression or an expansion of the Americorps program.

Essentially things that will help the country, rebuild the infrastructure, and instill a sense of community/patriotism/etc. in America's youth. That's what I am suggesting, not mandatory military service.

I feel bad that you feel this is a an "oil war" I think that we did the right thing by going over and trying to install democracy.

First, that's not why we went over there. That was the President's fallback position after no WMD were found.

Second, it's a stupid reason to go. There are plenty of non-democracies in the world where evil things happen. North Korea, Iran, some countries in Africa, but weren't not there. Why? For a host of practical and geo-political reasons.

We're not here to install democracy in other countries. It's not practical for us, and by doing so, we stretch our resources thin so that its tough to handle other issues.

We should have stopped in Afghanistan, and then used the funds we've spent on the war to shore up our anti-terrorism efforts at home, and other things.

Dingbat_Charlie

I think that we did the right thing by going over and trying to install democracy.

by this logic, any non-democratic country has the right to invade the U.S. to impose their ideology upon us.

Furthermore, if you want to invade another country to spread democracy, why choose Iraq? There are other dictatorships that are more egregiously evil than Saddam's. They didn't attack us. I've yet to hear a legit reason for us to be there.

If there is a draft, it is not our duty to go as much as it is our obligation inasmuch as it would be complying with the law. if you felt a sense of duty about it you wouldn't wait until you were drafted.
BTW, I am against the draft. The government works for us, we don't work for them. We are their bosses, so they can't tell us we have to enlist in the military or anything else.

What non-democracies possess the same (or worse) possible threat that Sadam did?

North Korea and Iran both are higher possible threats than Saddam was, for several reasons. First, as proven by our very forces after the war, the sanctions and other measures (no-flight zones, inspectors, etc). used against Iraq were keeping Saddam from developing WMDS. Right now, we don't have the same things in place against these countries.

Second, Iran's ideology is a much bigger threat against us than Saddam. Iran has done a lot more to support terrorism than Saddam did.

Finally, the biggest non-democratic country that poses the biggest threat against the US, the country that has done more anti-humanitarian things than Saddam ever could, is China.

Well first of all, one of the main purposes of war is to cut off your enemies ability to commit further to a war. Cut off their supply lines and force them to a negotiation. It is true from the days of Sun Tzu, all the way to today. The second thing is that it sometimes is tough for a soldier to kill when it is not necessary. Remember there is a difference between a soldier and a mass murderer. Its when the lines get blurred that people love to point examples towards.

i am an atheist... what i believe is anything that can happen in an infinite period of time will happen *shrugs* i have had feelings of maybe there being something else like fate ... like when i meet my significant other ... but i cant bring myself to believe in predestiny or a force that balances things out or even a higher being

No sense of interconnection or anything? On any level?

Even during the parts of my life when I didn't believe in God, I felt some sort of "connection." I have always felt a human connection if not a "universal" one. Of course, that is probably my own contrivance.

This would be a much easier conversation in person than going back and forth on a board...

Wow really? Back when I smoked a lot of weed, it made me want to smoke tobacco even more. Maybe that's just me.

Every now and then mixing booze and weed would go bad for me. Out having a great time, then suddenly I'm sweating, nauseous, a fucking mess.

We righted a wrong, and are continuing to do so.

Again, that's not the reason we went in.

And right now, it's up in the air as to whether we actually made the situation better. Right now, rather than righting a wrong, we're making things worse not only for our interests, but also for the interests of the people over there.

No, he was faulting Earl for not playing it earlier because it was the perfect song. It's not. Ron would crucify him for playing such a hack novelty song.
