Marine DI charged with 225 counts of "abusing recruits" (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,294353,00.html)
SAN DIEGO — A Marine drill instructor has been charged with 225 criminal counts connected to abusing recruits, a Marines spokesman said Thursday.
In one incident, Sgt. Jerrod M. Glass allegedly ordered a recruit to jump head-first into a trash can and then pushed him further into the container, according to court documents cited in The San Diego Union-Tribune. He is also accused of striking recruits with a tent pole and a heavy flashlight.
Two other drill instructors, Sgt. Robert C. Hankins and Sgt. Brian M. Wendel, face special courts-martial in the case, the Marines said. Arraignment dates have not been scheduled for either Marine.
Marines back in teh day would have laughed at this...

So can I sue the Army for having a drill instructor that made me run up and down 4 flights of stairs soaked with Tide Detergent? We had to do that because some douche bag forgot to put his bottle of laundry soap away before inspection.
Or when I had to have the Heimlich Maneuver done on me because I was choking on a steak at dinner because the drill sergeant only gave us two minute to get our food and eat.
Or the many times I got a boot in the back of my head on the range when I missed.
Boo fucking hoo.

No, we had to buy it at the PX.
Edit: BTW, remember the opening scene of Platoon, where the recruits were getting their first haircut? Had to pay for that too.

This is nothing new. Marines fuck with recruits and get in trouble. Marines break the rules and get in trouble. There are also those that don't. This guy pissed somebody above him off, it's got nothing to do with recruits. Thats the sad state of America today, and yes it has infested itself in the military.
And NJScott, please we all know army boot camp is cake.

Gunnery Sergeant Hartman: If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human, fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit. Because I am hard you will not like me. But the more you hate me the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?

BOOOO!!!! Just cause you were a jarhead, doesn't mean you have to rub it in. My dad was Marines, and he wanted me to go Army for the college bonus, which was like 24 grand on top of the GI bill back in 88.

I don't know if you've ever seen the History Channel show "Mail Call" (Hosted by Sgt. Hartman/R. Lee Ermy), but they did a show about West Point (I think) a year or two ago. Ermy is almost always gung ho about anything military, but this one was interesting. They talked about all the new "PC" type training they have now. They showed how they do much less yelling and screaming, and are "nice". Ermy made it pretty clear that he didn't agree with this new type of training.
Side note... My Navy boot camp Company Commander was almost a carbon copy of Sgt. Hartman in attitude (no hitting, though), and he looked a lot like Sgt. Carter.

You know I kid.
My dad was army during Vietnam and always told me his unit had to bail the Marines out of Khe San. I wish I had a clue when I signed up. I had a felony as a juvie and the only ones that would take me was the Marine Corps, of course I went in on an "open" contract and got nothing but a pat on the back for signing the dotted line.

Of course I do. I gotta say though, you Marines always are better shots. In Germany, I was the sniper of my company, and I qualified expert on every small arms weapon in the Army's inventory that they handed me. But when I got to Fort Riley, Kansas, I teamed up with a guy who did two years in the Marines and he became my spotter, and singlehandedly made my skills increase 100 fold just by some simple coaching.
When my dad and I would go shooting, (he's an ex Marine) he could out shoot me every time-and he was wearing bifocals at the time. One of the reasons I always believed Lee Harvey Oswald did JFK all by himself.
