Found out on Monday that, starting in two weeks, I'm going to be traveling to Salt Lake City for the next 4-6 months for work. I'm curious if all the horrible 'the bars close at 10' and 'the beer is only 1% alcohol' rumors are not true. If so, I'm gonna have cram my carry-on with whiskey.

I was out there a few months ago. Every bar in the state is considered a private social club. You just can't walk into one and order a beer, believe it or not you have to be sponsored by a member. Usually the hotel you're out will sponsor you so you can drink at the hotel bar.

The booze and beer are exactly the same as they are here. Its just harder to drink there.

I've heard these horror stories as well. Can it be any more Un-American?

Are you sure about that? I was driving through Salt Lake a few years ago and was able to order a beer with my meal with no real problem. Maybe there's a loop hole for restaurants?

I've read that the law is different for ordering a drink without a meal. I just wasn't sure if it was true.

I went to the AFB there. The women who aren't Mormons are pretty fun to hang with and there are some good bars to hang out in. I don't remember the names off the top of my head but the club on base was pretty nice if you make it out that way.

I was out there for a big meeting for work last year.

It sucked. They measure out the shots with a special limiter, so you get exactly the legal amount of ounces per drink. If you want more, you have to order a "sidecar" which is a shot on the side.

You have to join the bars to drink there. We had like 50 people at one place and we ALL had to buy a membership, that someone in the bar "sponsored" for us.

I also drank and drank and drank and didn't seem to get drunk... someone thought it may be from the altitude.

We did eat at one good restaurant though that I'd recommend, Spencers in the "downtown" area.

You can buy alcohol with dinner without a membership, it's the bars that you have to buy a membership for.

Bars are open till 2 but as TJ said you need membership to get in. Beer is 3.2% alchohol where as here in Nevada it 5.5% or higher, even the micro-brews have to stay under 3.2. They also use computerized shot pourers so the bartender cannot serve heavy or serve doubles.

They do have a couple taverns where membership isn't required but they only serve beer or wine.

I worked there for three and half years, 01-04 and hated the bar scene there so I usually would bring my own liquor from Nv and drink in my apt. If you buy liquor there, you have to buy it from a state liquor store at high prices and they all close by 7pm.

Another thing, it's almost like they can smell that you're non-Mormon and treat you like dogshit because of it. I'v only experienced this phenomenom in SLC as I have a few Mormon friends here in Nevada and they don't treat me that way. I think it has something to do with SLC being the Mormon capitol and they're not to friendly to outsiders.

Good luck bro and try and have fun, lots of pretty country to see.

Yes! So that is why I was drinking beer after beer and not feeling drunk. Mystery solved!

I think that may have more to do with the raging alcoholism than anything else.

Yeah, I'm pretty happy with zero wives right now. 6 or 8 sounds like hell on Earth.

Take a step back, Grasshopper. 6 or 8 times the nagging is a potential.
But then again 6-8 vaginas, and as many as 16 breasts!

The skiing is supposed to be kickass if you are into that. Like 7-8 world class resorts within an hour's drive of SLC.

I don't know about bringing any liquor in with you. I think that's illegal, it has to have the Utah stamp or something.

I went out for a wedding and almost ran over a guy crossing the street in the middle of a block. To make it even stranger he was waving an orange flag. Come to find out they started a program where halfway down most blocks downtown there is a crosswalk. You grab a flag out of a holder on a sign and wave it in a figure 8 fashion as you basically walk into traffic. At this point traffic is supposed to stop and let the pedestrian cross.

SLC is a beautiful town that has had all the fun sucked out of it by mormon law. If you want to have a good time go to Park City. It is a little non-Mormon refuge and a great place to get back to a normal group of people.

Well i'm pretty sure you can't bring your own liquor into a businees but how the fuck are they going to stop you in your motel room or apartment.

Drive the 110 miles west to wendover and buy all you want at the local grocery store, sometimes even on sale. We don't have liquor stores in Nevada.

God I love this state.

Mormonism is a freakin cult! Read "Under the Banner of Heaven" by Jon Krakauer and then wait for the black tie wearin, bike ridin, brain washed clean cut young man to knock on your door...then ask him to recount how J Smith was able to interpret the golden bible he stumbled upon::devil2:

I haven't heard about that but I have heard their sluts are barely slutty.

Salt Lake City is dead. I saw Phish play 'Dark Side Of The Moon' in its entirety there once and that was fun, but the city is not so fun.
