View Full Version : Hate the owner. Love the food...

There's an amazing deli on one of my routes. It's owned by a father and son, both chefs. Everything is freshly homemade each day, with daily specials. All the food is fantastic, but I absolutely love the chicken salad. Even the mayo they use is homemade and is amazing. So what's the problem you ask? The fuckin owners are cheap fucks. Everything in the place is over priced. I understand you pay for the quality of food, and I wouldnt mind paying the $7.50 for a chicken salad hero. It's just that these people are rude, unfriendly, and everything is to get more money out of the customer. For instance, one time I'm in the place and the owner is trying to sell people on line, shoes. Saying he can get a good deal on shoes. Making people feel really uncomfortable about it and forcing them to take his card. Another example is that they never round down on the price. Many times have I not had anywhere from 7 cents to 3 cents and these pricks will make you change a dollar. I mean come on! Not only have I been in this place over 20 times, I deliver your fucking mail. Give me a break! These people just rub me the wrong way and I want to just say fuck them and never go back. Yet the food is outstanding. :wallbash: What do I need to do? What would you do?

Ughs, the owners remind me of mothers who come into work and just throw their kids fundraisers in your face and say "what are you buying?" and don't leave you alone till you pick something out. I hate it cause it usually works as they guilt me into buying something. But I usually just buy the minimum unless I like the person or they were at least polite about it.
Anyway, I have no advice for you other then "what papabear said!"

:king:Nahh, I'm always by myself when I'm on the street. There's a chinese owned deli in the same area. They are over frendly, always rounding down on the price, it's just that the food isnt as good. The chicken they use is packaged and pre-cooked that they shove into a microwave, but the prices are much lower. I like the place, but I love/hate the prick deli.

dammit, you beat me to ass pennies
i've lived in very heavy immigrant neighborhoods with amazing array of shops & stores, and the shittiest of service to me (getting to the point of being annoyed when i don't answer them in their language)
but, the food is so good -- i kept going and putting up with the nonsense, and eventually i'll get a smile
there's nothing you can do ... except not giving them your business

I go to a deli for food but I go to a restaurant for the "experience". If a deli owner is rude and the service sucks but the food is GREAT - then I have to go back.
On the other hand, if I go to a restaurant and get shitty treatment with great food - I won't go back.
With a deli - service isn't really as important to me as the food. I would keep going back to the deli but if some mother fucker tried to sell me SHOES while I was in line - I'd tell him to go fuck himself.."but before you do", I would say sweetly, "make me a nice pastrami on rye".

why should they pay anything for your food?
imagine if this became a habit for customers, they'd lose thousands of dollars a year.
so f em for being assholes, but how do you not know they don't need the money?
how do you know the financial standing of their company? or family?
people used to give me shit all the time for being "cheap" not knowing i was caring for my sick grandmother and needed every dime for the thousands of dollars of medication, because you eat someones chicken salad doesn't mean you know anything about their lives.

They are well off people. Besides that im also their mailman once a week, so i do a service for them that is worth rounding down a couple of pennies. Not only that im also a semi frequent customer, so waiting with palm out for my 3 cents is pretty unthankful.

the shoes thing was quite bizarre. He didnt have shoes in the back or anything. He "had a guy" that gave good prices on shoes and was pushing it so far that the customer in particular was openly uncomfortable. He made him wait while he found his "guys" card and made the customer take both his and this "guys" card. saying "hey just give him a call, tell him i sent you." and kept going with this sales pitch on how comfortable and stylish they are. it was strange and all we wanted was our fucking sandwich.

while reading his original post this is exactly what I thought. Why should a business owner take the hit because someone doesnt want to break a dollar? Its arrogant to even think they need to. Isnt expecting or wanting 7 cents off being a little cheap? Yet you call them cheap for doing business. The prices are their prices you if you dont like it go somewhere else like the $1 menu at McDonalds. I bet they will make you break a dollar there too.

dont you get paid for this service you do? thats your job. When the post office raises their prices by 2 cents does the post office not expect people to buy 2 cent stamps? Well its only 2 cents and we give the post office business everyday, they should cut us a break and deliver it anyway. But they dont, I have had mail returned to me because I forgot to put the extra stamps on it.

You make a good point that it's probably cheap of me to expect a 3 cent discount. I just hate change. Although, I cant say for sure that I've done it at this deli, but there are plenty of times I've refused taking back change as well. Honestly I dont expect it, but I dont want to gingling up and down the block with 96 cents in my pocket. Lets be real here, I dont want these people to hand over food and drink. I just feel that being a frequent customer they can show some kind of thanks.

But they dont, I have had mail returned to me because I forgot to put the extra stamps on it. Now you're being silly. I dont raise prices on stamps, I dont sell stamps, AND MANY MANY MANY times I have taken care of my friendly customers (postal service calls everyone a customer). I've placed 2 cent stamps on letters missing them from my own pocket and mailed or remailed them. Some without the customer even knowning that I did it. So maybe if you were nicer to your letter carrier you wouldnt get back those letters.
Kindness goes a long way.

Next time you order your chicken salad hero and the guy asks you what size...tell him 13 triple E.
Just either bust his balls for trying to sell you shoes or say nothing after you order. The better quality food is worth it.
As for the price rounding...thats his choice I don't feel that it's malicious or unfriendly. Would you not wait for change if the bill was $6.93 ? The owner should probably work the tax into the prices. If it's a family owned place there should be no need for pennies. (kind of like at the bar)
Ask the guy which he prefers with the cole slaw...a loafer or an oxford?
