I'm in the same boat as you Amy. 6 paid holidays a year, that's it - Christmas, New Years Day, Thanksgiving, Labor Day, Memorial Day, and the 4th of July.

We work the day after Thanksgiving and it's a joke. Everyone in the industry is SOOO afraid to close, fearing that their customers might go to one of the competitors for a day. We do such a small amount of business on that day that we lose a ton of money just opening the doors and putting all the trucks on the road.

Yes, in a way.

Oh, and I was wrong about Mass. Technically, all you're supposed to do is go to confession as it is a day of fast and penitence, rather than a day of Celebration and, since the Consecrated, Transubstantiated Host from Holy Thursday is in the Tabernacle, and we are commemorating the death and laying-in-the-tomb on Good Friday, the Host is off limits as the Tabernacle serves as the Tomb until the Easter Vigil.

I'm with you LordJezo, my mom is an old school Catholic but I don't remember ever going to mass on Good Friday. My wife, on the other hand, has me and the kids going to Stations of the Cross during Lent and to mass on Holy Thursday and Good Friday.

I used to volunteer with the Youth Group at my home parish.

We did a Living Stations service, after which you could opt to go to Confession.

Holy Thursday is the last Eucharist before Easter Morning.
Good Friday is Fast and Penitence.
Holy Saturday is the Easter Vigil. (http://www.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/Lent/prep-eastervigil.html)It traditionally starts with a bonfire (burning the leftover Palm from Palm Sunday into ashes for next year's Ash Wednesday) outside the church buiding and processes inside for the remainder of the service. It's usually 2 hours long (sometimes more if your parish is doing multiple RCIA rites) and is worth going to at least once.

As for fasting:

I have never fasted. Children are not expected to and once I hit puberty, if I skipped a meal, I would get woozy and cranky as well as lose focus for the rest of the day. I figured that the Almighty had better things to do than make me risk my health in the name of penitence. (Besides, in the Bible it says that if you're going to bitch about fasting and call attention to yourself with it by proclaiming how holy you are because you're listening to your tummy rumble, you're not acknowledging the real Purpose behind doing it...so you shouldn't do it anyway. I'm cool with that.)

In addition to this, because of a period of intense depression I went through while I was in college that resulted in my inability to eat for almost two weeks, my body does not respond well to not eating. One of the exceptions is disease or infirmity; this counts enough for me.
