Which kinda makes it frustrating how much time he's taken off from acting in films over the years...though I suppose quality over quantity.

For some reason, I just never watch his movies. After finally watching "Gangs of New York" last year, I had to get on the DDL bandwagon.

Here's the AP's review of this movie -- it's an absolute rave.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071221/ap_en_mo/film_review_there_will_be_blood;_ylt=AmTyWjzggZ_qZ h1wZAwCfytxFb8C
The review makes the point that I've sort of figured out for myself just from reading other reviews and seeing previews: in this one, PTA's becoming a true epic filmmaker. He's setting aside some of the quirks and film school tricks that have kind of marred all his movies (and rendered "Punch Drunk Love" totally unwatchable, in my opinion.) He's come into his own as a director.
Damn, I want to see this. Now.

I just got back home from watching this film.....
I have to be honest.....
I'm not sure if can even have a number two film of the year.
NUMBER 1: "THERE WILL BE BLOOD"
Number 2: ... I have to leave this blank just because, in My "current" view, "There Will Be Blood" is so great and ahead of the pack that it almost needs the space to be reckoned with.
Number 3: "Into The Wild"
Number 4: "Juno"
Number 5: "No Country For Old Men"
"The Darjeeling Limited" Is Close to Me too.

It's classic filmmaking fully informed by modern thinking...which hardly ever happens any more. I could make a crazy argument that it is a better film than two of it's most obvious inspirations.....Citizen Kane and The Treasure of Sierra Madre.

The style of filmmaking is classic Hollywood...Beautifully shot, expansive with magnificent set design and a perfect feel for location....
The modern thinking comes into the approach to the two main characters ...
their relationship to each other almost mirrors a subtle split in both characters psyche...
Paul Thomas Anderson has an intuitive feel to unspoken psychological fractures in both characters.
Giant is an enjoyable film and is certainly epic but it is also fairly hokey and kitchy. James Dean while remarkable at times also went way over the top in the later scenes...Elizabeth Taylor was at the height of her powers, being what they were....and Rock Hudson was a little more stiff and stuffy than normal, partly because that's what the character required but also because he was not up to the task.
Dainel Day Lewis simply gives one of the best performances in film history.
The ending is definately a shock and a little insane but completely rooted in the character.
This is a dark and misanthropic character who we are clearly not suppose to feel sympathy for.
Sheepy....I like all kinds of films...and like to have fun and enjoy myself at the movies....
but I can actually enjoy myself more at a film that presents a dark and disturbing vision in such a clear and commanding way......I have absolutely no doubt that this is a masterpiece...and besides it's just plan entertaining.
I saw this movie the other night, and I completely agree with Paul-O's review, loved Daniel-Day Lewis the most in this movie out of any of his other movies, amazing preformance, this was definitely my favorite movie of 2007 along with "No Country"
So, thus, I give it a "Yeh!"

I just got back from seeing the movie. I am still digesting it, and haven't decided if it is my favorite of the year left. However, a few things are very clear to me:
1) Daniel Day-Lewis is an incredible actor, watching the movie you just can't take your eyes off of him. One thing did bother me though, I couldn't stop noticing the similarities between this character and the one he played in Gangs of New York.
2)Seeing a movie in the theater is just not worth it sometimes. Especially when surrounded by elderly brain dead moviegoers. One particular couple just would not shut up throughout the movie. To make matters worse the wife asked such brilliant questions as: (I have blacked them out as they are spoilers)
a) When Daniel's son returns: "Is that his son?"
b) When Daniel beats Eli to death at the end: "Is he dead?" mind you with blood pouring out of his crushed head
c) When talking to his son revealing he is an orphan: "Why is he so angry?"
These are just the ones my rage is allowing me to remember right now, I promise there was at least 20 more of this kind. :furious:

Just got back. Liked it, didn't love it. As everyone has said, Daniel Day Lewis is terrific. But, Paul Dano is very good and creepy, too.
One strange thing is that there are really only two characters in the film. Two or three others comes in and out, but only Lewis and Dano have any real depth. To be sure, you can't take your eyes off them, but hardly anyone one else is worth a damn.
One other thing: Johnny Greenwood's score is terrific. It's probably my favorite thing about the film. I also really liked the last 20 minutes or so. Beautifully shot, crazy climax.

Haunting is definitely the right word. I'm not one to usually take note of a musical score, but Greenwood did a wonderful job building tension throughout the movie.

I will agree that the movie was beautiful - and the best ART I have seen this year. I will also agree that Daniel Day Lewis should win Best Actor - no problem. The score was perfect... but I would never ever see this movie again. I also dont know that I could recomend this to anyone who isn't an art film person... as Paulo says - I am sure a TON of people are going to hate this movie. I know my movie theatre - which was packed - was very down on the movie when it was over.
I found a lot of the themes very interesting - especially what Daniel requires said at the end.
It really is scary how the truly rich people I know destroy everything around them... Daniel is dead on a family aquaintance of mine who basically is living this life (sans the murder as far as I know).
I am happy I saw it once... and only once.

I thought it was really good, first "film" I've seen in a theater in a long time and thanks to my DVR I avoided all commercials and trailers, so I got an unspoiled view. Dave is a DICK. It didnt ruin the movie at all though. And the score was amazing really went well with the film. I think people are comparing DDL character to the one in Gangs cause he has the same look. Hes in my top greatest actors in the last 30 years.

Yeah, I don't think this is some dumbass M. Night Shamamadkeriei3n3i34ian movie where the whole point of the movie existing is the "shock ending". I mean, does "Citizen Kane" suddenly become stupid if you know Rosebud is his old sled?

i don't know what it is with me, but lately I like the unconventional different ways movies are ending and not giving a neatly wrapped up good feeling. Like Cloverfield, and even I am legend, it's about time movies changed.

Yes and no. Catharsis is still pretty goddamn desirable, but it is unique right now to have movies that don't sport any. But I don't think anyone has anything over the ending of No Country for Old Men.
Loved the entire movie this thread's talking about. Start to finish. Even though Dave fucked the surprise ending in the ass for me, it was still the best movie I've seen in the theater ever.

Alright, so I'm getting ready for the movie to be released to DVD (on the same day at The Diving Bell and the Butterfly <3 ). And I listen to the soundtrack a lot, as its fucking amazing.
Something that has always stuck with me, however, is that Mr. Ron Bennington said the score wasn't that great because it took him out of the movie a lot of the time, because the score includes instruments that weren't around during the period of the movie.
What instruments? The album is entirely orchestral. Its mainly piano, violin and glockenspiel. Am I just forgetting a part of the movie that had electric guitar or something?
