I don't mind issues getting delayed. Once in while, but Kick Ass is like a year and half delayed. This is crazy. It has been so long I forgot what is going on. what bothers me more is that I am finding out about the comic from the movie info rather then reading it.
I know i asked this before, but the ghost box in the Xmen story, is it good, worth a TBP pick up, just what to see what people think and is it worth a pick up.
SEEYEYEyAYYYYAAAA
Ghost Boxes is OK, but sloooowwwww. It will probably read better as a trade. So far there's been a lot of talking and posing.
Kick-Ass is great, but I agree the delays kill the momentum. I don't think they care though...they'll have a nice new trade paperback on the stands when the movie hits.

I stayed away from it mainly because of loeb. And I'm also not a big fan of the ultimate story lines, though I've never read the spidey which I've heard good things about. It must be truly awful if you are saying its the worst. Glad I stayed away.

Ultimate Spider-man was the best Spider-man comic published in the last 20 years. It had some bumps in the road, but it really was great stuff and I highly recommend it.
Similarly, the first two "volumes" of the Ultimates were also great.
As for Ultimatum, I read the first three issues and had to stop. And I should have stopped after the first issue.

Just finished reading Cap 600. I thought it was good. Wish it had more of the main story, some of it felt like filler. I like what they are doing with Sharon and just hope they don't cop out of the story. I like that they show what everyone is doing from the storyline. I forgot all about what happened to the Red Skull. How did the female Bucky from the onslaught world come to this world? Where the hell did this happen? Liked the story of the friends talking about Cap. I liked the old classic comic reprint. Overall it was good.
So I guess with the Reborn limited series coming out, the Cap title is going to be put on hold. Why don't they just run the reborn story in the regular Cap title. Ah what the hell do I know.

Wow I totally forgot about Cap 601. And I have that down on my list. Question. I am reading The Punisher series(Not meaning the MAX title). He takes on Osborn, who sets the hood after him. In the story The hood is bring back dead people to fight the Punisher. A few issues back he brings back Micro. In the last issue he brings back old villians that died in Captain America comics from the 80's. In one panel, I see Steven Strange. The hood brought him back from the dead. My questions is how did Steven Strange die?
I now see Brother Voodoo is going to be the new Sorcerer Supreme. Wonder what others thing of it.

Odd aside, but I just read that Tim Bradstreet's brother-in-law, Stevhan Gobble, was killed in a traffic accident in Chicago a month ago. Gobble acted as the model of John Constantine that Bradstreet used for his Hellblazer covers, which he did from issues #134-#215.
http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t40/Tim_Bradstreet/stev1.jpg
Very tragic news. HB is easily my favorite comic series and Bradstreet's covers were amazing. His brother-in-law really came to visually personify the character for many of the series' fans, myself included.

I especially love the cover to #214. I was posting on a small HB at the time, and Bradstreet was actually one of the posters there. For that cover he made the graffiti in the background out of the names of the posters. I made it on as "Mojo" towards the bottom of the brick wall nearest behind Constantine:

I finished reading the first volume of Mage not too long ago. I enjoyed it but my expectations were probably too high. The story was more of a 'popcorn comic' than I was expecting but it did pick up as it went along. It probably didn't help that I knew the King Arthur plot point going in but the comic doesn't reveal that until at least 10 issues in. Still, I quite enjoyed Wagner's visual storytelling and it was interesting to see him progress as an artist so early in his career. I would give it a thumbs up but I far prefer Grendel.

I just got the latest Brubaker Captain America HC. I think it's called "The Man with No Face," but man, it was not good. First time I've been let down by the amazing run Brubaker has had on that title. The whole thing reeked like a typical Cap storyline that just happened to feature the Winter Soldier instead. I'd swear Gruenwald somehow rose from the dead and write this thing himself. Terrible art from the guest artists, too.
Oh yeah, Black Widow: The Marvel Ho strikes again.

I just read a mini-series that was REALLY good. It is called "Universal War One" and it really surprised me.
It was originally a 6 issue French limited series that has been adapted by Marvel into two 3 issue series ("Universal War One" and "Universal War One: Revelations" - 3 issues each). It's still the same story but Marvel decided to break it up for some reason.
The story starts one place and goes someplace completely different than I expected by the end. It was one of the best reads I have had a in a long time.

Finally I got to pick up and read Reborn. I thought it was good. Not a great story, but a good one. I liked that they sort of link everything together. Stuff that is going on now in the Marvel Universe, as well as referring to the past year of Cap. I sort of like the idea of why(Well what was revealed) and what happened to Steve. The only thing I think they should of done was wait, not reveal what happened to him in the first issue. Over all I liked it.
Just wonder, is this reborn storyline a planned thing or do you think that it was like" OK let's wrap up Cap's death and get Steve back in". Don't see why they could not just do the reborn story line in the regular title, besides selling a extra issue for 5 months.
Also I have been picking up the Theater of War issues, wonder if that is sort of a tie into the whole reborn story. Looking forward to issue #2.

According to interviews I read with Ed Brubaker, this storyline was generally planned a long time ago, long before Rogers' death EXCEPT Steve Rogers was supposed to come back 6 issues after his death, and he hadn't intended on the Winter Soldier or anyone else for that matter to become Cap.
Then as things progressed with the storyline, they pushed Cap's return out and made Bucky Cap.
As for why it wasn't done in the main storyline, one of the interviews explained why. I can't remember it, but there was a justification.

Gays and blacks in comic books are "contrived." (http://www.theouthousers.com/content/view/3914/156/)
Check out these fan reactions to a recent JLA story that featured a bunch of non-white superheroes:
"...how many blacks did McDuffie manage to sneak onto the team this time--five? (I bet DC editorial gave him the same order as Burger King in that lawsuit--to "lighten things up around here.")"
"Why don't they call this the "Minority League"? "
"I don't think anyone will support an original black "mainstream" character. I know I won't."
"Maybe they should establish a separate league for all the negro superheroes. I'm not saying kick them ALL off. One would be okay. (Doesn't Hollywood have some kind of law that says every movie has to have at least one black in it?) I just think they're going overboard with all this diversity stuff. I mean, how many comics do minorities read anyway?"
And my favorite…
"Couldn't they get Static, Black Lightning, or one of his daughters instead of Dr. Light on the cover of BET League of America? Ha!"
Classy.

Fuckin' morons.

They really should be the gold standard for making re-buying already collected series. Absolutely stellar job by DC.
I totally agree with one of the intros that talks about how as a character Jack Knight always just seemed a little too "real" for the DC Universe. It's clearly a fantastic series in terms of superheroics and fantasy in general, but I'm glad that Jack really hasn't been written much outside of his own series and by too many people besides Robinson.

It's clearly a fantastic series in terms of superheroics and fantasy in general, but I'm glad that Jack really hasn't been written much outside of his own series and by too many people besides Robinson.
I read that part too. Jack Knight is by far my favorite comic book character, and after I became a dad, I loved him even more.

It made so much sense when Robinson wrote that in the intro. The only other instance of Jack that I could remember was Jack being in Geoff Johns' JSA, and ultimately retires and gives the staff to Courtney.

Give Geoff Johns credit in reconning the GL origin story to explain why a Green Lantern would need to fly a spacecraft.
And

i was at my friend's house tonight and he knew i was into comic books and asked me if any of them would be worth anything. they were ones his grandma had given that she had in storage. first book in the pile was superman 199. it's the first race between superman and the flash. i knew that had to be worth something.
i brought them home with me to check the back of wizard. superman is listed as 320. he also had a batman with the first appearance of scarecrow listed at 100. and fantastic four 74 with an appearance of galactus and silver surfer listed at 110.
how accurate are the listings in wizard? if he tries to sell them, would he get as much as they were listed? what would be the best option to sell them? i'm gonna talk to the local shop owner about them and see if there is any interest. i have no clue about the market for selling older comics.

It ultimately comes down to individual demand as opposed to a set price since those are more of just "suggestions" as to how much they are worth. You're likely not going to get top value or near it at comic stores except for maybe the Superman issue. That's a pretty "famous" issue and a popular story, which can work for and against you since it has been reprinted numerous times at this point. You'd likely be best served selling them yourself through eBay or its ilk or any big flear markets/dirt malls/etc. near you that collecters tend to hunt at.
Some collectors go by Wizard's prices, others go by the annual Overstreet Price Guide. I'd reccomend Overstreet.
Are they in good shape? If they're not in at least "good" condition you're not going to much. Check Overstreet for detailed explanations as to what rates as "good" or "poor" or "fair" or "near mint" and so on.
If they're in good shape and you want to go nuts in trying to sell it to serious collectors for maximum value you can always get them slabbed. (http://www.cgccomics.com/grading/)

Graded books can sell for tons more, if its a good grade it can be hundreds more, its crazy.
You should find graded and non graded sxamples and see if the price difference is worth it.
Or put em in a nice cover and hold on to em until the next movie is released and then sell em

Reborn #2 came out. I thought it was pretty good. Just think that they revealed the who story line too quick. It took almost 2 years with the death of Steve Rogers and within 2 issues of Reborn we find out a majority of the secret of the title. But I am enjoying it.
Is it me or am I suppose to get the impression that the Red Skull's mind is with Steve Rogers? How the hell did this happen?
I like the fact that they are bringing in the entire Marvel story line into these issues. Bringing in Osborn, HAMMER, connecting all the major stories from the past year.
Just wish I had more time to read and enjoy the comics...again..DAM YOU JOB.

I read somewhere that they bulked him up so he'd appear to be more of a physical match and more menacing to Hal.

No, while they may have used similar words, they were clear that the new books would take place in the Ultimate Universe after Ultimatum. And at least superficially, it's a new start with the names "Ultimate Comics Spider-Man" etc.
They had hinted that everything would be different from Spidey, but that was a swerve.

I wouldn't bet on it being a game changer. In fact, after #2, I'm more convinced that the outcome of Blackest Night will be that a bunch of formerly dead characters have been brought back to life.
I also believe that another outcome of Blackest Night will be that the heroes figure out that Batman isn't dead.

Not at all. I simply do not get the Geoff Johns hype. I don't think he's a bad writer, but he's about as "safe" as they come. He doesn't have a distinct voice at all and doesn't take any chances with the characters and stories he writes. So far with GL he's brought back Hal Jordan (yawn), inserted a cliche "The One" storyline (double yawn), had a nondescript army of GL's fight a non-descript army of eeeeeeeeeevil guys behind Sinestro (triple yawn) then just recycled that story and had a bunch of different groups with different colored rings (quadruple yawn). Holy fuck, I'm glad I did.
I always enjoyed the series, but it's one of the few I've read since going trade-only that actually works better as a monthly title. It's so amazingly layered and dense that reading a trade and then having to wait the better part of a year for the next one made it very easy to forget key things that were happening. Being able to read the whole thing in one go is incredible and I flew through the first 12 books in just about a week. I'm totally caught up and fresh on everything and I'm about to jump in to #13.
Here's hoping a series that has kicked so much ass goes out kicking even more.

The problem with Geoff John is that he plans so far ahead that you don't realize that there is a story until it's over. The stuff from Blackest Night is actually in the Green Lantern Reborn miniseries. I think my biggest problem is Johns is that every single one of his books are rife with retcons.
As for FC, it was disjointed and hard to follow. You kill off Martian Manhunter and Aquaman, but there's no lead up and it's only one panel? They're not the most popular characters, but they are still considered heavy hitters in the DCU and that's how you take them out? Secret Invaders was full of stupidity (a whole post unto itself), but it was far more readable. And I am a fan of Morrison. Hell, I read every issue of the Invisibles.
And now that 100 Bullets is finished, I can go and read it end to end. I stopped reading it when I went trade only and realized it would be best to wait because it was a finite series.

Tim believing Bruce is still alive is not completely unbelievable if you look at it from a psychological standpoint and based on the track record of resurrection or rebirth in the DCU.
Tim lost his parents, Conner, etc. and facing Bruce's death was just too much for him to handle psychologically. And he said as much in the series that he didn't believe Bruce was really dead because other people had come back after being "dead" (Superman, Hal Jordan, Barry Allen, and a myriad of others).
It is more of an emotional response, but based on the last few scenes of FC it looks like Bruce is likely alive somewhere in the distant past. Tim is going to end up being the catalyst for bringing him back - somehow.

It's competely an emotional response, and one not based on any evidence that Tim has. Is Bruce alive? Yes, but Tim has no reason to think so, other than he doesn't want Bruce to be dead. And that's not really a reason.

But its kind of a sticky wicket - it is irrational for Tim to believe Bruce is dead, except for the fact that he is in the DCU. The rules simply are not "hard and fast" when death is concerned. It is still an emotional response, but there is enough hope that exists (in his world) that Tim's desire for Bruce to come back might actually be possible.

Well, they've made a couple of changes like instead of a facial deformity, Jonah now has a club foot. Also, instead of six-guns he will be throwing a boomerang and yell "Zowwy" when he takes out a bad guy.

I gave up on the Red Robin book after the second issue. Tim Drake is my favorite character in comics, but I just can't get interested in "Robin mopes around Europe looking for a dead guy."

For GVAC:
They had showed footage of Jonah Hex at the San Diego Comic Con, and everyone was saying that it looked good. I tried looking on the 'net for bootlegged footage, but it's all been pulled for copyright issues.
I know that there's supposedly a scene where Hex is on a horse with machine guns strapped to it. I haven't seen pics, but people are saying the effects look cool.
The only thing I can suggest would be to keep checking imdb.com for updates.
Hopefully some kind of trailer comes out soon.

I am thinking about getting Deadpool's titles to read a laugh or two once in a while.
The San Fran storyline for X-Men sucks, the fact that Wolverine's kid is basically the same exact character as wolverine except for so tats and a diff set of claws sucks, and what's with having about 5 different X-Teams all over the place.

No it wasn't. A few interesting ideas here and there, but it got mired in its own continuity too quickly.
Are there story elements that Claremont started that are still unresolved?
There are websites dedicated to all the unresolved threads Claremont left dangling. Anyone remember Colossus' son? Neither does he.
I think my biggest complaint about X-Men is that writers seem more interested in retconning X-History than actually moving the book forward. The latest Uncanny story brings back Maddy Pryor and Kwannon (both dead) for no reason except to add Psylocke to the team.

I highly doubt that a lack of Chris Claremont is one of the reasons comic sales aren't what they once were.
Are the X-titles really that different now from when Claremont wrote them? Tons of dangling plot lines that go nowhere, too many characters, "event" stories every other month that don't really mean anything. Claremont definitely wrote a number of classic X-stories, but he was really going nowhere for quite a few years with those characters.
JustJon
09-09-2009, 10:14 AM
To be fair, Claremont had a lot of misses, but there was a period in the 80s where everything was epic and didn't chase its own tail.
Of course, Claremont was also heavy on thought balloons and angst.

WAY too heavy on the melodramatic "interior monolgues." Even going back and re-reading his good stuff and it seems like every character is emo before emo existed.
It was also a pet peeve of mine how he had to beat you over the head if a character wasn't American with their dialogue by having them constantly sprinkle in words in their native language for no reason, like Nightcrawler was able to learn to speak English but couldn't master words like "no" or "yes."

Both are very good but both are very different. Blankets is very "real" and is more of a "slice of life", autobiographical story whereas BH is far more surreal and dark.

The current JSA is made up of several original JSA members (Green Lantern, Flash, Wildcat, Hawkman (until recently), and a variety of members who took over the mantles of previous JSA members, who died, such as Dr. Fate, Dr. Midnight, Mr. Terrific, Hourman, Stargirl. Found In The Closet - Marvel Mania Hollywood Menu! (http://live.comicbookresources.com/2009/09/28/found-in-the-closet-marvel-mania-hollywood-menu/)
More than ten years ago, the restaurant industry went nuts with themed restaurants. The success and expansion of the Hard Rock Cafe franchise led to the launch of many more themed restaurants, most of which didn’t survive more than five years. One of those theme restaurants was the Marvel Mania restaurant in Hollywood, California — well, actually, it was located in Universal City outside Universal Studios, which is a short drive over the Cahuenga pass from Hollywood into the San Fernando Valley.
Then of course there was the “Stellar Sweets” deserts section which featured “The Galactus.” Here’s the description:
“You’ll need to be the devourer of worlds to tackle this titan. Twelve scoops of ice cream topped with marshmallow, hot fudge, raspberry and caramel sauce; nuts, cherries and whipped cream. A titanic treat, perfect for any party or Super Hero family.”
“The Galactus” could have been yours for only $34.95.

3, reading, Deadpool:Merc with a Mouth tonight ... I better laugh
4, readning "Darkest Night"--looks like a potential winner.

Worst ever was the old shop I use to go to when I first started collecting. I would not buy much but I was consistent. Every week at least 2 to 3 titles. One time a Punisher title sold out and I asked them if they can get me a copy and they said yes..then the next week they forgot and said they would get it...the week after that...I finally said something and the owner told me."Well you don't buy that much anyway". I said ok..and never when back. Fuck'em..last I heard the shop burnt down..I had nothing to do with it...
The shop I go to is run by a Russian couple the wife is nice and if a title sells out, she will pull it from the holds and give it to me. Hell last week I did not have enough cash for all my titles and she let me slide until this week. The shop rules..I always go to them. If your shop is not faithful to you..why should you.

SO GOOD. I have a real love/hate relationship with Ennis as a writer, but he doesn't fuck around when he tackles war titles. Definitely pick up the second volume if you like that one. He's doing a bunch of smaller standalone trades for Dynamite similar to these that are also very good. He also did a retcon Nick Fury story set in WW2 that's along these lines.
I'd also reccomend the Unknown Soldier miniseries he did about a decade ago if you like this.
And speaking of US, the new ongoing Unknown Soldier series is amazing. It's like Ennis' war stuff and Scalped combined. Only one trade so far, but I can't reccomend it enough.

That must be great for the reservists. If I had a title on my pull list and they sold it to some crumbum off the street I'd burn that place to the ground.
Well she does get him/her the issue again..but hey, she is a small shop and I am actually in the shop. You reservers...get your asses in their.

After recommending Preacher to Stugots late last week, I started rereading Preacher end-to-end. I forgot so many parts of the story over the years, and am enjoying it all over again. After finishing volume 3 the other night, I wanted to go to the observation deck of the Empire State Building.

I did the same thing about a year ago or so. I forgot a lot of great parts and sick violence.

I read Preacher all trades, once each. Started somewhere when the series was in the middle, so it's my first time end to end. I'm remembering bits and pieces but then I get surprised by bits again. It's fun. I remembered it being violent, but there's times where the violence is forgotten and it's a whole rediscovery (like the Saint of Killers at Masada)

I had forgotten the serial killer/unlucky cop storyline and the violence there, some of the Saint of Killers stuff, and some of the New Orleans stuff.
Or the story of the unlucky bartender with the wrong name.

Anybody besides me checking out the Boom! Studios kids books? Muppets, Disney, The Incredibles...they are doing some really nice all-ages comics.

It's almost a perfect series if you could cut out most of the "Salvation" storyline.

i never had a problem with any of preacher. salvation seemed to be needed after jesse loses himself after the whole desert fiasco. probably one of the best books ever would put it on the level if not higher then watchmen because it has so many layers.

My only real problem with it is the whole thing with Jesse's mom being alive. It's completely pointless. I don't mind the rest since it's just Jesse getting his shit together and seeing what goes down between Tulip and Cassidy, but Jesse's mom showing up alive is pretty cheesy and unecessary.

The final issue of Planetary comes out tomorrow along with Batman and Robin #5.
I think I'll have a good comics day tomorrow.
