View Full Version : Do you steal internet?

I'm currently 2500 miles away from my internet connecton. The house I'm staying in currently has its wireless disabled (because my father can be a pigheaded, stubborn jerk and not accept that his son knows more about technology than he does) and I have one outlet for internet that's on the other side of the room.
So I'm pulling in a weak wireless signal which I'm doing some surfing on in order to get tired enough to fall asleep.

Do I? No.
If I was somewhere for a limited amount of time, and there were people around who didn't take the necessary steps to keep me from temporarily using it... Yes. I would.

I'll do whatever I have to do to get online. But, I don't hog bandwidth when I'm "borrowing" someone's connection.

i think that if you are just going to jump online to look something up, or do some harmless surfing, its ok. that uses minimal bandwidth.
if your are going to look at gay or kiddie pr0n, or dl some stuff, pony up and git your own connection.

If you're just browsing, I don't think it's a big deal.
My family lives in a 2 family house and their internet was ALWAYS slow. One day my sister opened up her itunes and found an entire folder full of porn movies titled "[neighbors name]'s Movies". I mean GIGS of movies.
She had been stealing the internet connection and using it to download craploads of shit. I guess somehow her folders ended up on our network. Jeff fixed the router so you needed a key to access it and named it "BUDDY ONLY" (my dad). Now the internet runs way faster. It's a cunty thing to do if you're going to hog all the bandwith. She had no internet and never bothered getting it because she figured she could just steal it. That's fucked up IMO.

When I'm stealing, I'll only go to sites I already have a cookie for and not enter passwords.
I'm on a hard line right now. My dad and I have been arguing about the wireless all morning.

I will steal it when I can if I need it. most of the time it will not impact anyone, especially late at night. I will not do file sharing or anything, just email checking and that type of stuff.

Double standard for me.
When I am someplace that I have no connection of my own I will search for an access point and jump on anything I can find. I won't eat up their bandwidth and will be respectful of the sites that I go to when using it, I will only do basic web browsing and email checking if it isn't my connection.
As for my own wireless connection, I keep it locked down at all times and refuse to let anyone on it that I do not know. I don't want someone getting on there, downloading a bunch of mp3s off Limewire and getting me sued by the MPAA. I don't trust everyone enough to leave an open address on there.

Find your dads modem and hit the hard reset button on the back. (Usually you need the end of a paper clip, the button is recessed.) Then he'll have to redo the whole thing, and you'll still have the weak signal to get through. Tee Hee Hee!

I steal internet, there's no reason to pay for it if you're wireless.

I never thought about it. I did consider stealing my neighbors cable though, but never did.

I use my neighbors wireless connection whenever I'm downloading something illegal.
That way if they trace it, he goes down. Otherwise I use my own connection.
It's way faster than his anyway.

I never thought about it. I did consider stealing my neighbors cable though, but never did.
My parents had a lake house that they used on weekends for about 20 years.
My Father was always too cheap to pay for cable so he actually spliced into his
neighbors cable, right where it went into the house, and put a splitter in.
He then ran a cable under the brush and into his basement where he then ran it to the
rest of the house. He had it that way for years and no one ever knew about it.

I have my own wireless network at home. I sell lumber for a living so I drive to job sites in subdivisions all day. About half of the middle/upper middle class homes don't sercure their networks so I sit in front of their houses and steal theirs to run my laptop faster than the ol air card.

dont you think they would get suspicious of a 50ft flatbed parked outside their house?

I know we've had this discussion a few times on this website.
If you steal someone's signal for a limited time, I don't think it's a big deal. I mean it IS everyone's responsibility to make sure their signal is encrypted.
But if you latch on to your neighbor's signal everyday like clockwork, you're scum. Period.
I wouldn't depend on someone else's signal anyway. What happens when their router needs to be reset while they're gone for hours? And the signal is usually shit through multiple walls anyway. You're pretty much fucking yourself if you depend on someone else's signal.

How is that possible? Your wii doesn't have internet access on it's own. It has to access your (or your neighbors) internet.

I had internet for my computer, but didn't have an ethernet connection from my living room. I should have said I stole internet from my neighbor using my wii.
I don't do it anymore, I think it is pretty disdainful. But you are just silly to not have a password for your connection.
