View Full Version : Does anything truly OFFEND you?

In this wimpy Politically Correct age, I'm forever hearing about people being deeply offended by this or that.
I'm 36 and I can honestly say, I've never been offended. I mean... jew jokes don't bother me, Abortion issues, jokes about my mother, my profession... whatever. It doesn't affect me. Maaaaybe I've occasionally found something "inappropriate" but, certainly not offensive.
If some comedian or "internet personality" bashed every single male jew from NYC, maybe I'd find it funny. Maybe I wouldn't. But I certainly wouldn't give it so much value that I would write a letter, start a campaign, agree to boycott, or sign a petition.
My question is; WHO & WHERE THE HELL ARE THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE SO EASILY OFFENDED? The internet, networks, and movie studios are constantly bowing to pressure from "these people".
It seems like a simple question but, it really isn't. I've never met anyone who has met anyone who gave a shit about Janet Jacksons boob. Or Cookie Monsters "irresponsible eating habits". etc etc.
So I ask you. Seriously. Have you ever been truly offended by a comment/joke/sentiment? If yes; did you act on it?
Just to even the field, here's the textbook definition of "offensive":
of·fen·sive /əˈfɛnsɪv or, for 4, 5, ˈɔfɛn-, ˈɒfɛn-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[uh-fen-siv or, for 4, 5, aw-fen-, of-en-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation
–adjective
1. causing resentful displeasure; highly irritating, angering, or annoying: offensive television commercials.
2. unpleasant or disagreeable to the sense: an offensive odor.
3. repugnant to the moral sense, good taste, or the like; insulting: an offensive remark; an offensive joke.
4. pertaining to offense or attack: the offensive movements of their troops.
5. characterized by attack; aggressive: offensive warfare.
–noun
6. the position or attitude of aggression or attack: to take the offensive.
7. an aggressive movement or attack: a carefully planned naval offensive.

Also, I'm offended by anyone who has the temerity to disagree with me and my world view.
Since of course, I'm right about everything.

This thread brings up a good point.
"offended" is different than being pissed off.
People can get pissed off at anything.
"offended" is reserved for things you don't have to get worked up about, they immediately have a harmful psychological effect.
Using this definition... I agree with fezident and I have never been offended.
Which is odd, because I really thought I had been.
Turns out I was just pissed off.
Of course there are things that offend me, but I sure as hell ain't telling you fuckers what they are.

No.
I am never offended by simple words.
There are people that I work with who are offended by the stupidest things.
For example. I make fun of religion all the time and people get very, very offended.
There are people right here on this board that get offended by a simple opinion on things.
Look at the thread I posted a while back talking about how happy me and my girl were

Great thread Fezident.
Words have never and will never offend me. You can call me whatever the fuck you want. I will respond and I won't let you have free reign over me but you didn't offend me because who the fuck are you? Nobody, that's who.
I fucking HATE when people's "Line" gets crossed. Especially fans of this show and O&A. EVERYTHING is open season and everything eventually gets picked on but suddenly a fan here and there say "You went too far." Who says, you? Fuck you. I say if you can make a good Parkinson's joke at my grandfather's funeral I may not appreicate it but if I know it's not coming from a person looking to hurt me I'll chuckle.
Humor is just as important in my life as music, and I won't ever put limitations on what can be funny.

sr71blackbird
12-31-2007, 08:56 PM
I am usually not offended by things to the point to do much about them, but I draw the line on hurting people who have been taken a beating. Like, if someone was taunting a girl who just lost a loved one or anyone I know who is going through a rough time and a third party were to lace into them I would be offended for their sake. But I'd never get on the bandwagon like you mention, and petition and stuff.
I have a friend that does that stuff though, and it is very nerve wracking when she does it. She speaks her mind about stuff that she feels is wrong and she's adamant about it. I posted about it once too, how she got in the face of a food server in a restaurant we were at about his "attitude".

"Bans" and laws that take away the choices and freedoms of Americans...the smoking ban, the trans fat ban, the "N word" ban, the soon to be "movie volume control" law, sin taxes, luxury taxes, sugary beverage taxes, etc. Not that I used to plan my day around smoking cigarettes while eating trans fatty doughnuts and screaming "nigger", but I used to have the choice.
The only way I cope is by voting (in every election, from town elections to the presidency). At least I can say "it wasn't my fault".

Rosie O'donnel comes to mind. She's constantly offended by comments that others make. Even something that's seemingly harmless (like Kelly Ripas "you don't know where that hand has been" comment to Clay Aiken) gets her soooo fired up. She keeps saying "... and I find that offensive!"
I think the only people that get truly offended by the comments of others are people with an agenda. Or... they're searching for their identity.

I have been offended by many things, things said by friends and strangers, things portrayed on the screen big and small, things sung or rapped, hell I've been offended by Southpark in the past. I think it is important to be offended, at least a little bit, at least about something that you believe in. It makes you question why you (at least for me) are offended, why would someone be offensive, are you being offensive? It should make you consider the context and the source and the target (if any) of the offense. I think offensiveness is not unforgivable and in many cases should simply be brushed off or treated as heated argument easily overcome with time or a few beers.
Yay for being offended you fucking douchebags!!

I said nothing OFFENDS me but that doesn't mean nothing bothers me or annoys me.
I think when you're offended by something, you're deeply & emotionally affected (effected?) by it.
When Sarah Silverman & Don Rickles start cuttin' into the audience, yeah.... I cringe. I still know "tasteless" means.
But even if I'm having a one-on-one argument with somebody I really care about, I've never felt that "how dare you!!?" thing.
98 percent of women get offended if you ask them their age or weight. Even on that superficial level, I can't think of ONE time that I've reacted in that splenetic/indignant manner.

But that seems to be saying "I don't get offended over the little things" as opposed to "NOTHING offends me."
And so many of those bold declarations seem to revolve around the idea that "offended" only applies to attempts at humor, or that nobody can ever actually be offended.

You just keep talking about it like it's some thing that people hae to go out of their way to do. It's a basic response.
Yes, I'm pulling out the dictionary definition just because i seems like people have a diferent perception of "offended" built up as this thing tha people aren't likely to encounter:
1 a: to transgress the moral or divine law : sin <if it be a sin to covet honor, I am the most offending soul alive — Shakespeare> b: to violate a law or rule : do wrong <offend against the law>
2 a: to cause difficulty, discomfort, or injury <took off his shoe and removed the offending pebble> b: to cause dislike, anger, or vexation <thoughtless words that offend needlessly>
transitive verb
1 a: violate transgress b: to cause pain to : hurt
2obsolete : to cause to sin or fall
3: to cause to feel vexation or resentment usually by violation of what is proper or fitting <was offended by their language>
— of·fend·er noun
synonyms offend outrage affront insult mean to cause hurt feelings or deep resentment. offend need not imply an intentional hurting but it may indicate merely a violation of the victim's sense of what is proper or fitting <hoped that my remarks had not offended her>. outrage implies offending beyond endurance and calling forth extreme feelings <outraged by their accusations>. affront implies treating with deliberate rudeness or contemptuous indifference to courtesy <deeply affronted by his callousness>. insult suggests deliberately causing humiliation, hurt pride, or shame <insulted every guest at the party>.
TheMojoPin
01-04-2008, 06:48 PM
I'm just saying that being offended isn't this huge thing that people rarely encounter...if it's something that annoys you or insults you or irks you or pisses you off or whatever on all those varying scales...that's technically being offended. It's not some terrible thing. We all feel that way over different things.

So why bother picking on the cartoon? Shouldn't you have the same dismissive opinion of anything people are offended by? And don't you realize that such a nonmoral approach is in the vast, vast, vast, VAST minority of human opinion? If you want to pretend you feel that way, fine, but don't talk down to people like what they're saying/doing/feeling is abnormal or the exception when all you're doing is basically being a one-note troll to aget a rise out of everyone else.

and you get this information from a poll you did?

Believe me, I'm not pretending.
This is one of the many reasons most people don't like me or agree with my opinions.
It actually works out well, because it keeps people from talking to me. Something that I prefer.
Seems to me that the only person I'm getting a rise out of is YOU. Not EVERYONE.

others right to say things trumps my right to not to be offended. sorry, but its how i see it.
its my personal responsibility to pick/choose what i hear/see.
i think when your offended, you just shut it out- "whatever"
when your pissed off, you retaliate.
yes? no?

I guess this is the part that confuses me the most when people talk about being offended like it's something to be avoided...as if all other forms of expression need to be protected, but offended/insulted/whatever expression does not get the same protection. Why not?

I am tolerant if it is something online or on the radio or TV. I simply ignore it, turn it off etc.. Offend me in person and I will not be silent about it, especially if it involves being disrespectful or hurtful to others.

Yes, we all know the "change the channel/turn it off" option...but why is the expression of offended people something that they apparently don't have the "right" to do? Why do so many talk like the "rights" of all other expression are so precious, but if it's coming from someone over somthing they're offended over, their expression doesn't count?
It seems very hypocritical.

It is hypocritical, but unfortunately that is what society has come to. Whenever I see a thread that makes fun of tourettes I just refuse to read it or participate in it. It is not funny to me because my son has a mild form of tourettes. If I were to post my disapproval in the thread, everyone would just taunt me more trying to get more of a rise out of me. I guess that I just choose my battles carefully.
Since the subject of South Park was brought up earlier, my son had started watching South Park. He would turn it on when I was in the livingroom too. A couple months ago, he was getting ready to watch it and the preview came on and it was going to be about "so and so has tourettes". He just said, "Oh" and switched the channel. He went back to watching it the next day.
I'm sure that I the fact that I have even mentioned the fact that my son has tourettes will make some loser start a joke about it, therefore offending me and I will not participate in this thread any longer.
(on a side note, I use spellcheck on my long posts and it wanted to change TheMojoPin to thumping )

Thumping?
*Thumpthumpthumpthumpthump*
Here's my flipside to the "turn it off" argument...the people putting out the product that somebody should just turn off could have opted themselves to ignore or not listen to the issue that bugs them. They made the choice to deal with something that they don't like/think is ridiculous/etc., just like the people who are potentially offended by the result of THAT choice are choosing to do.
I'm just saying, it's all ultimately different sides of the same coin.

Save it. If you HATE people talking to you so much, why do you keep coming back to an internet message board, which is built around and only exists for people communicating with each other? You're clearly full of shit, and you're just playing a character. If you only want to spout your beliefs and not have people talk back, why not start a site or a blog? Why keep coming to and posting on a public message board?
Maybe you haven't noticed yet, but when you are on a message board you are not actually talking you are typing.
I talk to pretty much no one at work unless it has to do with my job. Even then I'd rather not, but it's required of me.
No character here my friend. What do you want, references? Just go over to my site and ask some of the people over there
that have known me for years, including my girlfriend. She's pretty much the same way I am. That's why we get along so well.
You should really look in to things a bit better before you tell someone they are full of shit. I'm about as real as they come
my friend. That's one of the reasons I hate people so much. They always try to be something or someone that they're not.
Don't believe it? Just try me. Come on over, see how long you last.
You won't though. Most of you big mouth's never do. You're all talk, no action.

Keep spinning.
A message board is built around public communication. If you ACTUALLY couldn't stand people talking to you and didn't want people responding, you wouldn't be posting here. As I said, you'd have your own site or blog where you could spout your opinions and not hae to be burdened with people talking/responding to you. THAT is why you're a "character" and full of shit, because you're a complete hypocrite by trying to pass that off yet continually coming back here to check replies and then respond to them.
And your "challenge" makes zero sense. "Come on over?" You mean try your way of thinking? Why? I know it doesn't appeal to me and my personaity at all. If you're talking about me looking into who you really are, why should I care? All I'm responding to is what you're posting here, and how you're blatantly contradicting your own spelled out persona. But yes, I highly doubt you live your entire life as nonmoral and nihilistically as you claim to. Most people can't unless they're basically complete shut-ins. If you can, hey, bully, it doesn't really matter to me either way. I'm just calling you out because you're pretty obviously trolling for responses with your abrasive comments and attempts at insults with amost every post and then you're suddenly claiming you hate it when people respond to you or talk to you. No different tha the countless other trolls we've had here over the years. Your game was old before you even joined.

If you have your own site, why do post on a forum where people can reply to you IF YOU HATE PEOPLE TALKING TO YOU?!? Answer me that.
And stop with the stupid "challenge." I never "dared" you to start a site or get me to post on it, nor did I say you "didn't have any balls." You just refuse to answer my question ad you're being a blatant hypocrite in the face of your own absurd boast, and that's what's full of shit.

Listen up, Capote...is your issue just with the actual act of talking or people communicating with you? Hell, either way, it's absurdly hypocritical given what you posted to sound so badass. And you're telling me to go to a website because your internet character schtick is so painfully obvious and you want to prove otherwise? You lose.
And stop telling people to go to your website. Now you're just spamming on top of trolling. In the context of this board, yes, you're full of shit and trolling for negative attention with nearly every post.
Please, attempt to shock/insult everyone with your next daring, hyper-critical post. We're done here, troll.

I've never once even brought up my site until YOU mentioned that I should have one
and you're the only one I told to go over there, not "PEOPLE."
No matter. You wouldn't last very long over there. They'd eat you alive.
Not only have I never mentioned it, I've never even posted a link to it.
I wouldn't exactly call that spamming in my book.
Nice try though.

Anyone who knows me, knows I am probably one of the most politically incorrect people you will ever meet, so basically very little offends me. The only things that truly offend me are ignorance and when people pick on those who are not able to defend themselves, in order to make themselves feel better or whatever their motives are. I really dislike bullies, especially weak ass ones who only pick on the people they know can't or won't fight back, in order to impress others.
