A half marathon in VEGAS in December. Runs right down the strip. Very interesting idea that I am seriously considering.

Jesus bro, how quick is a quick 4 miles?? Awesome that youre running so much.

On treadmill I cant manage anything under a 9 min split if Im going for 4+. When I go 3 or less I can do an 8 split but I feel like crap after.

Also running outside is a different animal entirely. Im much muuuuch slower when I dont have the t-mill pacing me

i def. dont mean quick like in the fact that i ran it fast, just that it was shorter than i usually run so it went by much quicker.

It's been a very rough year health wise for me. I'm 5'8". When I was going thorugh radiation, i got down to 115lbs (very bad, very very very bad). Then i put on weight with the help of steriods, cheeseburgers, and lack of sex (125lbs, hoooray!!!!! 130 is ideal to my doc, i liked 125lbs). Got off the steriods. Felt good. Walked the dogs a mile daily, kept to my chicken and veggie routine, with the occassional bag of potato chips. Then i fell through a coffee table. Back on steriods, anti-rejectatories, and 'other'. yeah, i'm 144 lbs now. 8lbs of that is probably bloat because i'm about to bleed, and thusly why i'm so cranky and even bitching about this in the first place. But, steriods really pack on the 'holy hell i have a huge ass' pounds. *sigh* So here I go again on hardcore southbeach (potato chips, i will miss you, cereal, i'll miss you even more....oh cereal...i can't part...i love you...... no, fuck you, look at the size of my ass...buh!) diet. I lost 30lbs in one month when i did SB about 2-3 years ago. So, here marks my last weekend before I return to eating a lot of eggs, avoiding my precious wheat pasta, and instead of walking with my coffee and cigarette for a mile in the morning with the dogs, it looks like i'll be jogging.

why is this so fucking long. Basically:

-I feel fat
-Since i'm off the fattening medication, i should drop weight fairly easy.
-BUT, since I am an inpatient estrogen based being, i'm doing the hardcore southbeach diet because it's worked for me before.
-still no sex, and still no sex toys that fit. must visit creepy store. daily orgasm = faster weight loss. FACT.

Just a quick update... I've been at a steady 205-210 since January. No exercise other than running around with my son (which I'm about to go do now) and the act of copulation (not with my son). I eat decent, but nothing extreme like when I was actually losing the weight. Feel great, look good, very happy. Plus I'm in Chicago now and just got back from Molly's Cupcakes, where I accidentally half-mentioned Ron and Fez and got myself a free cupcake.

Now that I've got a staff gig here in NYC I've started getting back into a gym routine.

Right now I'm just doing cardio (30 minutes on the treadmill...5 min jog, 5 min run, repeat)

Next week I'm going to start working weights into the mix. I tend to build muscle rather quickly so I'm starting to focus on cardio to drop some lbs first.

Feels good to be back into the gym routine again.

Hammer, you run too fast. Just too fast.

I've been hitting the gym, just not posting in this thread for a while.

doing a lot of cardio: elliptical, rowing machine (great new thing for me) and using the spin bike solo with the help of a podcast I found that's pretty great. Cadence Revolution.

Bench pressing at the gym, got a couple of 25 lb dumbbells at home with a swiss ball and mixing that in during the day. I work at home mostly.

Dropped 12 pounds so far and feeling fit. I'm getting back to yoga 2 days a week too, starting tomorrow. Flexibilty.

I've been thinking about fitness and age lately. I'm 43 and I can definitely sense that I'm a good 10 percent off where I was at 25. I was a high school basketball player and always physical, but you know how it gets in your 20's. You feel indestructable, drink like a fish, I smoked 2 packs a day. I still played hoops and was in pretty good shape, but I was coasting on youth and genetics.

About 10 years ago I began that struggle to quit smokes and started running a little, nothing serious, but just enough to keep it moving. My job is more physical than people think, too, so that kept me reasonably fit. For some reason I got it in my head to train for a half ironman triathalon in 2001 - boredom and challenge more than anything else - and man, am I glad I did that.

I can't imagine where I would be if I didn't bank that time and effort in my 30's, because it changes in your 40's, a lot. Weight doesn't come off as easily, soreness is more prevalent. All the things you tweaked and banged before start wearing down a little.

TheGameHHH
10-21-2009, 06:53 PM
thanks Ritilan, im already sore as shit in my late 20's. i figure to not be able to lift anything over 5lbs. by the time im 40 now.

Didn't have much time yesterday so I cranked up the treadmill and pounded put a fast half hour, Hammer-style.

In a half hour I did 23 miles. Beat that, Hammer!

Seriously, it felt good to open it up. I do a lot of cardio, because I want to burn calories and it's also mentally good for me to drain my battery a little bit, so I'm always conscious not to go too all out. I've overtrained before and it's a shitty feeling.

Just came from swimming.

The guy in the lane next to me was kicking his feet on top of the water and making huge splashes like a fucking whale. I had to stop mid lap to fall behind him more because they were crashing in my face.

On Wednesday some guy in a speedo walked in and put on the stereo (which is a no no since it's always quiet). He didn't even have the courtesy to ask myself or the other swimmer until he was getting into the pool.

The best part? I keep swimming and the music comes on, im thinking ok it's a score to a movie or something this is OK but the song is bothering me because it's so familiar. A couple of more laps and i figure it out, this guy has just walked in and put on the Mama Mia! score to the movie and the song playing was "Dancing Queen". I almost fucking died right there int he pool, then the guy "swims" 4 laps and leaves.

still here

189 on the scale last night put on about 6-7 pounds of softness taking the summer off- prolly level off here and start gaining muscle mass slowly again (i.e. don't think there is much more to lose).

Also, back up to pre summer weights on everything but the bench- still have 10 more pounds to go on the bench.

Also, bumped into a chick I used to know way back when. She caught me right at the end of my workout, when I was all inflated and ripped- heh, heh. I love that. "Hey, how YOU doin'?"

Too bad I looked like someone popped a baloon by the time I got home, so my wife got the wet noodle gun show.

So I finished in 1,060th place. Which doesn't sound great until you realize there were 18,000 participants. And I started in the 4th corral. Which means at least 3,000 people started out ahead of me.

833 out of 6505 in my gender. 115 out of 775 in my division. Ran about exactly an 8 min pace.

Very happy with the whole experience. Running down the middle of the Las Vegas strip as the sun was coming up was just breathtaking. Skydivers, bands playing, the volcano at Mirage going off just as I passed. Just awesome and I recommend it to anyone looking for an experience.

I know some of it is diet related to my GF cooking a lot of sauce heavy french food but any exercises that could help firm the area up?

I think its the pectoralis minor and some of the oblique is in there as well, top half isnt a problem and is solid, I just want to firm up the lower half.

Decline presses, dips.

On an unrelated note: the gym is starting to fill up with the Resolution crowd a bit earlier than usual this year. Makes for great people watching, but fucks up my routine more often than not. Wish these people would hurry up and hurt themselves and move on to the next bright idea. :wallbash:

I have been doing cable crossovers since we dont have a decline bench, well a movable one, at my small gym, I have asked for one and the owner told me thats next along with an expansion since they are exploding with members. I guess its the same resolution crowd as you, I see a lot of older women/men now taking up the free weight section going their squat curls with 10lb weights. It is frustrating when you just want to get through the set and move on.....

well, how much is diet related? Are you obese, or just have a little extra floating around. Nate's 2 suggestions will help but like any muscle it can be extremely defined but if its under blubber it is going to be hidden.

Yeah that was part of my first post, the GF likes to cook cream and sauce heavy food, if I suggest more plain chicken, fish, or even try to make my own food then that means I hate her cooking, its a no win situation.

I mainly try to control my lunches and breakfasts, down 3 pants sizes now and the belt doesnt even work its so loose but then I always dropped weight quickly when I got in the gym. The main goal is just to get a slight definition in my midsection.

I also wonder what supplements are good now, its been a while since I have used them, the main thing I take now is a protein powder, I used animal pak but Im just looking for the new great supplements. Anyone know a website that lists the benefits/uses?

Well right now just taking protein and creatine with a multi, Im just hoping to build some more lean mass. I need to get some before the new rules go into effect and alot of products have to get pulled. White Flood (http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/clabs/flood.html) is supposed to be a great pre workout formula but I think its getting pulled come the new year.

Cool thread. I'm down 45 pounds since August 31....I was 5'9" and 204. 159 as of ten minutes ago. I started off in Sept with a strict running regimen to get some conditioning back. Started with the weights in October. I have been combining both at least 5 times a week. Lately I have been doing a lot of HIIT on the treadmill. 30 minutes total. Alternating each minute between 5 and 10 on the mill at an incline of 2. I follow that with 15 minutes at 6 and 15 minute cool down at 3. Altogether you get in about 7.1 miles in an hour. I have seen some amazing results from this over the past 4 weeks. It is way more effective than just jogging for an hour. My strength has gone up tremendously as well. I squatted 185 last week and maxed out on chest at 225 (2 reps). I make sure I do at least 5 minutes of core everyday as well. I couldn't do a 30 second plank when I started this in Sept. I regularly do north of 3 minutes now. I feel like a different person. No back pain, better eating habits, the wife says I don't snore at all anymore...I really hope I stick with this!

Fantastic! Did you talk to someone to set this up for you or did you do your own research?
Eventually you will slide into a maintenance program to keep you at a level your happy with.

I set up my program through past experience and doing some more research on my own. I was very into working out throughout HS and college. I just turned 30 last month and I was sick of getting fat. My metabolism gets worse and worse as I get older and I felt like if I didn't do something about it at 204, I was never going to do it at 254 or 304. I have a very addictive personality. I am a recovering compulsive gambler (12 stepper) and saw myself getting addicted to fried fatty foods and lots of red meat. I also was very addicted to salt. When I saw that I was over 200 around labor day, I made some drastic changes. For my height, that is considered obese. I Went from a 2500 - 3000 calorie a day diet consisting of awful fatty foods, to a 1250 - 1500 calorie diet with no salt, no red meat, and absolutely no fried foods. I have actually discovered that I like vegetables!!

I will say though, as a person who has a gambling addiction, which in my opinion is one of the least understood addictions (some peoople -my inlaws- don't even believe it is an addiction), the addiction to food and lack of exercise in this country is sooooo abundant and so dangerous. Yet, it is so accepted. No one said a word to me (not even my wife) when I put on all that weight. Everyone now says how much different I look and how they were worried about me because of all the weight I put on....thought I was depressed, worried about my physical well being, etc. Not one of them said a thing when I was overweight though!! They all had a lot to say when I was gambling. Everyone has something to say to drug addicts, alcoholics, smokers, even anorexics. But no one wants to hurt a fat persons feelings, even though obesity and related ailments (type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholestoral, arterie blockage, the list goes on and on) are the number 1 killer of people in this country. I just don't get it at all. Obeses people are killing themselves and hurting their loved ones the same as every other addict. Why have we as a country decided that weight is a taboo subject?

In my opinion you nail it. The problem is that we have to eat to live and we as a nation have decided that we would rather have processed blech instead of real food. It looks like you have got it down as far as your plan good luck and keep us in the loop.

OK i have maintained for a number of years and as of late I'm packing on a few pounds. I gotta nip this in the bud before it gets out of hand. Because of my work schedule I rely mainly on diet and excercise is a few situps and pushups. I'm not going to let myself get back to what I was.

great workout today. Rode my bike to the gym and back (2 miles each way). Did an intense shoulder and back workout. Then did 5 circuits of 60 second mountain climbers, 90 second jump rope, bearcrawls, and 25 pushups. Took about a 2 minute rest in between each circuit. Ended it with 30 minutes of HIIT and 35 minutes of a walk at speed of 4 with an 8 incline.

Tonight I tried something new. My gym here in my new home of Chicaaago offers a ton of classes that are included with the membership. My wife does the "power hour" once in a while and I am always reticent to try it. I did it tonight though. What an insane full body workout! I really was drenched with sweat. The instructor barely gives you any breaks throughout the whole hour....3-5 minutes, 20 seconds at a time, tops. I am definitely going to throw 2 of those sessions a week into my routine. I really think it will help me get off that last 10 pounds and get me back to my HS graduation weight of 150.

Bi's and Tri's today. Followed by a lot of core work and 65 minutes on the mill. Some HIIT, Some jogging at 7 and some walking at 3.5 and an incline of 15.

On a side note, has anyone ever tried Intermittent Fasting? I have been doing it for the past couple of weeks and I love the results. It really tricks your body up and you burn a lot of fat. The idea is to mimic what a Calorie Restricted diet does (i.e. 1000 or so calories a day), without any of the negative effects of a CR diet. Like decreased muscle mass, fatigue, headaches, etc....There are a number of ways to do it. The way I do it involves 3 24 hour fasts per week. I know it sounds like it goes against everything we have been taught about eating. Everything we have been taught is crap though. There are extensive studies shown that indicate IF is nothing but healthy. The benefits are endless, among them is a longer life! Your body takes 36 - 48 hours of no calories to start storing fat and go into starvation mode. It will also go into starvation after 4 or 5 days or so of a CR diet at 1000 calories a day. Starvation makes the body eat away at muscle and hold onto fat. IF never lets your body go into starvation, therefore if you are eating enough calories on your eat day and if you are exercising enough (especially on your fast days), your body will be burning a ton of calories everyday, giving you a huge caloric defecit on the fast days. Fat will melt off!! Here is the schedule I use

Sunday - breakfast, lunch, dinner. Eat no later than 7 PM.
Monday - No food or caloric drinks until 7PM. Light dinner. 750 cal or so
Tuesday - breakfast, lunch, dinner. Eat no later than 7 PM.
Wed -No food or caloric drinks until 7PM. Light dinner. 750 cal or so
Thrsday - breakfast, lunch, dinner. Eat no later than 7 PM
Friday - No food or caloric drinks until 7PM. Go crazy. I keep the food healthy, but I will booze it up!
Saturday - I usually graze throughout the day and then eat dinner...and probably imbibe a bit

there has to be a better way to shed your last ten. if this was good then intermittent bulimia should be good too. your metabolism is going to be out of wack. that kind of schedule seems like it would slow it down . id watch more of what i was intaking every day. adding more cardio. skipping meals just sounds like it would have zero positives. its not all about weight loss.

I am still watching what I intake very much. I am eating all "good calories". Whole foods, chicken, turkey, lots of veggies, etc. I really though the same thing as you when a trainer I spoke to sways that he does it. He does it a little differently, he eats everyday but squeezes all his calories into a 4 hour window. My way allows me to eat everyday as well. I encourage you to read up on it; and if you find any negatives, please let me know.

all this diet information is awesome. when i get a few minutes tomorrow night im gonna sit down and read it all, i need a lot of help. I eat very healthy but can't seem to shed the last 10-15lbs that i want to lose. last June i bottomed out at 170 and I wanna get to there or 175 but im kinda stuck around 188. I ate a lot less when i was dieting last year but it was more like starvation rather than a solid diet plan, i dont really wanna go back to starving myself. I have def. put on good muscle weight but for some reason my body still wont drop the little areas of excess fat i have.

tonight i did bi's and tri's along with 3 sets of throwndowns and 1 one minute plank. then I ran for only 35 mins on the treadmill due to some serious stomach issues.

So, I work out like a M-er F-er, generally from 8-9:30 at night, get home and then about an hour after my workout, I am starving and end up making a heaping plate of leftovers at 11:00 - right before bed. Bad idea- so I bought a post workout protein shake, figuring I should give my body exactly what it is looking for and skip all the other shit I've been filling myself up with.

Problem is, I cannot believe how much of this crap they recommend drinking post workout. 4 monstrous scoops of this protein powder to 20 oz. of milk/water to make this almost syrupy shake. It is way too much. Can anyone recommend a post workout alternative?

Yes. For me, the best late night alternative to crap is lots of fiber. Fiber fills you up. You do not really need all that protein after a workout, especially if you are someone who is a meat eater and has protein in his daily diet. Your body is craving calories, but you can trick it by haveing foods with weight, but few calories. Try a whole bag of frozen brocolli, each bag usually has 5 servings at 25 calories per serving. If you don't like the taste of straight brocolli put a few servings of canned marinara (or left over real sauce). And there you have a 125 - 225 calorie meal (depending on if you use sauce), that will fill you up and have virtually no fat.

Trader Joe's sells these bags of broc for $1.79. My freezer is full of them.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with what Terry-c suggests, Broccoli is one f my favorite foods to eat. Its incredibly healthy and low cal. but If you just completed an intense resistance
workout protein is recommended because your muscles are rebuilding and repairing themselves and this is what the body primarily uses protein for.

i hate those shakes, they have alot of calories (unless its a lite shake) and I still feel hungry
afterwards. I make my own shakes, 3/4 cup fat free milk, 1/4 cup fat free greek yogurt, 1/2 cup berries, 2 scoops vanilla protein, 1/2 teaspoon ground flax seed, 1/2 teaspoon chia seed.

I mash it up and drink it down.

Check out fat free chocolate milk, It has a decent amount of protein, no fat, low cal. and you can then eat something else like the broccoli to fill you up.

I think I am going to do half the shake (just to finish the product and keep the protein) and a bowl of broc.

Not really worried about the calories- I'm 6", 190 and have a fairly lean swimmer's shape, which I'd like to keep. I'm also concerned that if I keep taking the recommended amount of shake, I'll start to bulk up more than I want. Don't want to end up like those knuckleheads in the gym who can't put their arms down. A little bulk is OK- too much goes downhill quickly.

Thanks for the advice.

ps- I've also found that these shakes cut my recovery time down significantly- I feel much less sore the next day.

plenty, up your calories and focus your workouts on heavy resistance training.
Do multijoint x r cises deadlifts, squats, push press, thrusters, bench press,
look into creatine and protein supplements.

This is just the tip of the ol' iceberg, pm me if you want some more detailed info I train people for a living so I can help you out.

I willo take your advice and if that does not work then I will PM you. I have to admit I hate squats and probably won;t do them

Squats are extremely good for you. I hate Lunges but I force myself to do them.
