You have what is known as G.A.S.

Gear
Acquisition
Syndrome

I'm here for you if you need to work it out.

I've managed to whittled my collection down to 2 basses...

Gotta tell ya. I can sleep at night, no problem.

watching Greg Howard and Tony Levin play together and both playing the chapman was almost as good as sex. It was magical

gvac said anything more than 2 strings is useless. i know tony levin has a custom made 3 string bass - e/a/d.
i was looking for a pic of that, when i found all the ones with him and the chap.

actually, thinking about it, fieldy from korn is so talented that he only uses 1 string. this could be made into the fieldy special- the ibanez 1 string bass.
this would make it useful under gvac's bar of < 2 strings.

Vic Wooten is a great bass player, but to say he blows them all away is a little crazy.

He is a different kind of player. It's like saying, Kurt Cobain blows away the lead singer of Foreigner.

Just doesn't compare.

I won't sit here and talk trash about Vic, because I love the guy...But he himself will tell you that you are nuts.

Now back to the bass talk.

Mike. Put a limit on your bass buying...seriously, it's a slippery slope!

I don't think your habit sounds as bad as other musicians that I know. I would kind of put you in the category of typical musician, nothing too extreme.

I've been playing guitar for 23 years and can't read a note.

I'm sure you could just as easily pick up the bass.

Go for it Mendy!

I've always said "I don't play Bass. I play SONGS."

After all the phases and trends, it all boils down to a Fender and an Ampeg.

I played a 5 for many years. And I even had a 6 because that's what the guy I was replacing used to play. I've played Chapman Stick, Electric Guitar, and Bass for the Blue Man Group in Toronto. Yada yada yoda.

The best set-up (for me anyway) is my Fender PBass Deluxe. B-E-A-D. Meat & patatas all the way.

When a producer sees a session guy take a $4100 boutique bass out of the case, he'll roll his eyes and, very possibly, send you home.

God how I love a simple Fender.

if i had a $4100 bass, it would never leave the case.

im quite happy with the collection i have amassed.
for my 10th anniversary, i get my upright, and then i think im done.

Best prematurely dead 2 string bass player: Mark Sandman of Morphine.

Mike Teacher
01-14-2008, 06:39 AM
The first time I saw Mike I saw he had a 12-string bass; and knew he was a serious bassist. The 12 -string is a fucking monster. I owned a Hamer 8 and that was insane enough.

I've seen a one string bass built by Mark Warr for Trey Gunn. Mark Warr makes the Warr guitar; a tapping instrument similar to the Chapman stick.

Can you embed YouTube vids here? Beats me, so here's a link for now:

FYI: It's a boring vid; I had just changed strings and was doing a 5/8 pattern over and over on each string to see how the fret buzz would be; so what youre hearing is the same figure; repeated as I go down each string. It's tuned just like a low B 5 string bass; B, E, A, D, G, up fourths for 8 strings. There are 10 and 12 string warrs.

It's just all insane GAS. AS described before.
