I think it's just stupid to start regulating thought. You start going on a slippery slope here and you don't know where it will end up.

Do you think this law would fly in the U.S.? I don't think it would ever come to that but the sick thing is you know that anyone 'against' this would be considered racist themselves and be shunned. Good thing some of the older Senators hates the blacks as it is.

EDIT: Going into depth, I honeslty think that in our current state, the law wouldn't pass because there would be enough people to realize what it 'means' but there would definitely be a group of people who would be for it and they'd build over time. It might be a post-modern Prohibition thing.

Would this mean Racist Vinny would call in from Rahway?

I think it wouldn't have a chance of passing because the ACLU would keep shoving it down the Supreme Court's throat.

Hatred has been around since the dawn of time. Human beings are truly silly creatures: what makes us think a "law" will stop hatred?????

In life, there are feelings and there are thoughts. Sure, you MIGHT be able to change someone's thoughts but you can never change someone's deep-seated feelings. Hatred will always exist. If nothing else, it will just drive it underground. And isn't that what the US is fighting now??

The law doesn't outlaw "hatred," but rather the expression of hatred.

It's akin to when the slaves were freed and then granted the right to vote. The laws were on the books but were not enforced b/c people still hated blacks.

Only when the govt started enforcing laws prohibiting the expresssion of hatred did the blacks finally get their civil rights.

Of course, even the reformation had it's limits. The president even refused to sign an anti-lynching law!

Hate exists. You cannot outlaw what is in the haters mind. You can and should outlaw (and enforce) the expression of that hatred by all means possible.

I suggest dropping a few high yield nukes in Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and every other state that sponsers hate groups like the palestinian murderers.

i'd rather know who the haters are and who they hate rather than have them become all clandestine. we should have a right to speak our mind. I mean I don't support expressing hate in physical ways (eg lynching a black man) but i am willing to accept verbal/written hatred (eg a "blacks suck" pamphlet).

HordeKing and Ikea,

I agree with you! As long as the freedom of speech exists, you *know* who the "enemy" is. If you drive them "underground" then you are making it just that more difficult for the "authorities" (although we should never under estimate the power of the government!!). Such a law is useless!

Also there was a part about hate crimes being more severe. I don't think someone who murders someone out of racism should get a longer sentence. Then you are punishing people for why and not what.
