Would you rat someone out to save yourself

Recently we have been discussing the case of baseball players going to congress to testify and whether or not Andy Petite should tell the truth and in essence rat out Roger Clemens for steroid use.

Which leads me to this hypothetical:

Lets say you are busted for a substantial amount of drugs and face the possibility of a 10 year sentence with no parole in a maximum security prison. However, the DA comes to you and says if you rat out the guy you got it from they will give you 3 years of probation but no prison time.

If the guy you got it from is your friend, would you rat him out to save yourself jail time?

People can do or say whatever they want. But my friends and family dont rat. There have been many situations in my life and no one I know ratted. It is the way we are brought up. Maybe its being Italian and that being taught to me since birth by everyone in my family. Or maybe its understanding that the one who gets caught is the one who got caught. Trust is a big issue in life. I would never do or say anything to someone I didnt trust. Thank God my friends are trut worthy friends and not that type of person!

Im not religious but the Catholic religion doesnt rat. From what I remember you can say anything during confession and the priest wont rat you out!

But, if that somebody was, say, torturing animals or small kids or whatever, I'd go off the fucking deep-end, beat them beyond identification and walk away from the friendship anyway.

There was no child molester in the original situation offered by Knowledged_one.

I would have no problem dime-ing out a child molester. Drug use is an entirely different matter.

The original question is misleading. Petite wouldn't necessarily be ratting out Clemens. He would just be telling the truth as he should since he will be under oath.

However, the scenario you described would be telling the truth for personal gain.

But to answer the question, I probably would.
