That's it let's have it out.

Jim Morrison is the most overrated piece of shit to ever hit the music industry. His music is generally bullshit "poetry" from a drugged out clown. Just because you try to appear to have depth & intellect doesn't mean that you have it.

Am I wrong? Prove it jerkface.

I agree. The Doors always sounded like circus music to me; I never really understood the raving over the Doors and Morison. It's definitely one of those things a lot of folks seem to be into that I just don't like.

The blonde one was called freedom
The dark one, enterprise

Seriously, Scott Stapp writes better lyrics than that.

Follow me across the sea
Where milky babies seem to be
Molded, flowing revelry
With the one that set them free.
Tell all the people that you see,
It's just me,
Follow me down.

I can do this all night.

Admit defeat now.

Moe makes sense here. There's some good Door's tunes, but I think the majority of their stuff isn't anything special.

My gf is in love with Jim Morrison and The Doors. I tried to relate by going to a book store and looking through his poetry. I cannot get into it at all, though I'm not big on much poetry.

If you want to talk about a great lyric writer, look no farther than Joe Strummer.

I just think Jim was a big star at the time and because he died while still huge his legacy will live on for a LONG time. I kinda get a douche chill when I hear people call him "The American Poet" because I don't think it's anything special.

But the fact that his legacy lives on and grows isn't his fault and you shouldn't get pissed at Jim Morrison for it. He died young which always seems to help your legacy. Don't forget that the record company wants to make as much money off them as possible so they release and re-release the few studio albums and live shit that exists. Then throw in a few Fanboys at radio stations and in record stores and boom: You have an overrated rockstar.

Again, Jim is good but not as good as people say, and maybe not even as good as Jim thought he was but that's besides the point.

Jim Morrison has that je ne sais Iriquois that causes nerds to argue his greatness 40 years after his death. Being one whose greatness is arguable is a kind of immortality which IS greatness. Nonetheless, Val Kilmer is way better.

I've never been a Doors fan... seemed like a bunch of rambling nonsense to yours truly.

On a sidenote, when I was being given the tour at UCLA, the tour-givers stopped at a locker covered with stickers and told us that this was Morrison's locker. The stickers were supposedly imbued with LSD and Jim would lick them before going to class. It was, much like their tale of nude water polo on top of one of the dorms, a complete fabrication, but it made for an entertaining tour.

One of my favorite sentences ever written down:

No eternal reward will forgive us now for wasting the dawn.

This entire past week, i've been in doors mode, and have been playing nothing but a playlist of my 25 favorite doors songs.

 I love the Doors and and I love what Morrison brought to the group. (and yes, i also love val kilmer).

There is no universally loved music. Every musician that has ever sung, played, or written a note, has fans, and people who dont like or dont get it-- even Mozart. So for someone who wasn't a fan in the first place to decide if someone was 'overrated' is a little bizarre to me.

Sure dying young adds to your popularity. You get the whole 'romance' aspect of living hard, dying young, plus its the ulitimate "leave them wanting more" tactic. You cant overstay your welcome the way aging bands do. But that doesn't make the popularity any less legitmate.

Wow, I can't believe you fuckin' haters are too self obsessed and stupid to realize the Godlike importance of Jim Morrison, whose artistic existence was ESSENTIAL to providing Echo And The Bunnymen with the People Are Strange song to cover, which only heightened the already excellent Lost Boys movie. Still, I prefer Jim's brother Van.

P.S. Lost Boys II is coming out soon. Maybe even direct to DVD. Sharpen your stakes...

I just don't "get" Pink Floyd (it's hyped like it's so impressive, and I just don't see what the big deal is).

I fucking hate Led Zeppelin. The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion of their day.

As much as I'm not a fan of the latter two, putting the Doors up there with them is an insult to both groups. I can at least respect or appreciate aspects of PF or LZ even if they're just not for me...The Doors were just wanky hacks.

It's not as if it actually MAKES them shit. We're all just random people on the internet just spouting off about what we like and dislike. It should be obvious that these comments, especially the more scathing ones, are just personal opinion and hyperbole. It's not like you can't like them if other people don't...nor do those four groups sum up what "the masses" should or shouldn't like. Someone could not like all four and still love tons of mainstream or "legendary" musical acts.

OMG...the idea of this thread alone is ridiculous.

Morrison was a Music Legend, and beyond that, a Poet.

Granted The Doors, from a musical perspective, weren't an amazing band, but the band as a whole, fronted by this lyrical genius, is one that is unlike any other band before it, and the basis for many bullshit bands after it.

And be advised: Just cause you got ears to listen, and eyes to read, dont make your opinion on music right. You need soul.

Something that the naysayers on this thread seriously lack.

Correct yourselves.

The only way Jim Morrison could be more insulting to "soul" is if he raped soul's mom and then spelled out another on of his shity "poems" on her back with his demon seed.

He's a wannabe beat poet no better than the parade of coffee house hacks and charlatans before and after him...he just had a better backing band and was prettier in tight pants.

Just because something is largely ambiguous, meaningless or abstract doesn't automatically make it poetry or "soulful." Sometimes it is just the meaningless drivel of a self-important manchild who wanted a way to get drunk, high and laid and nothing else.

The difference I see is between tearing down or defending a musical act or instead falling back on attempting to insult the people with the opinions.

Uh, yes, because the artist is a public figure who is fair game for both praise and criticism. The "critics" in this case are posters on a public message board that you are also on...it's the equivalent of having a discussion with a group of people. You're really gonna start insulting people and pulling out meaningless "credentials" in that context over a stupid rock band?

You're not "offending." You're just going out of your way to be insulting over something really trivial.

How could anything on either side be "ignorance?" Look, we can dress it up all we want...at the end of the day, it's just pop music. We all have ears, tastes and brains that we use when we listen to this stuff that forms our opinions. It's pretty much impossible to be "ignornant" about music when it comes to personal tastes. It's not like people are spouting off cluelessly about the technical aspects of the music...we're talking about personal tastes. Those can't be "ignorant." That's a ridiculous declaration. And just because he's YOUR idol doesn't make him some kind of sacred cow that's off limits to anyone else to make fun of or criticize. Why get personally offended over a public figure that there's never going to be a general public consensus over? There's always going to be differing opinions over pop culture.

Moreover, my credentials ARE in fact meaningful, and i take pride in the time and effort i put into UNDERSTANDING how literature works. I wouldnt take a mechanic's opinion over a dentist's if i had a toothache, ya dig?

Except you toss them out there as if they automatically make your opinion unimpeachable and the "right" one. What about all the people who have "literature backgrounds" who no doubt can't stand Morrison? Their opinions are negated because other people who majored in lit or english or love to read (all of which are me, FYI) like him? How does that work? It's pointless to try and make this a dick-swinging contest as if either side can somehow "prove" that their right. I can't prove the Doors suck...you can't prove that they don't suck. It's totally subjective. Comparing it to something concrete like dentsitry or auto repair isn't aplicable at all. The arts are the arts and trades are trades. Art is all in the eye, or ear, of the beholder. "Credentials" are meaningless when it comes to personal tastes about things like music.

I've noticed Jim Morrison is an icnredibly polarizing issue. People who love him will bite your head off for not liking him or 'understanding' his genious. People who hate him will fight you senseless as well.

Then there are those of us who just don't really give a fuck about him or The Doors. Some good songs, others not so good.

And I want to take a stab at poetry in vain of Morrison.

Hellish cities on ice
Dispersing cold fire in the night
Mosaic of faulty power lines
Tasting sparks to feel alright
Alligators bleeding through their scales
Poets ridiculed with their own tales
Harbor ships setting their sinking sails
Hold my head up cause she won't fail

I wrote that on the spot. What do ya think?

ok, you lil shit...i tried to make nice, but you wont have it.

Well, here it is. That whole "art is in the eye of the beholder" nonsense is applicable to a certain extent. I find it to be a cop out for those who cant express WHY something is good or not.
Some types of art (i.e. literature) is not entirely subjective. For example, Shakespeare, Yeats, Donne, Kafka, Poe - to name a few- are renowned for being great writers. Why? Not because alot of people like them, but bc they understood and profoundly utilized the technical mechanics of language. This is why they are heralded as great writers.

From your reasoning, what is popular (people's personal tastes) somehow translates into what is good. Extend that to today's music and you'll have us believe that Hannah Montana is the greatest artist of all time.

That is where your ignorance lies....there are technical aspects of proper literary form.
if i were to write something like:
Train puddle of is weather
sprout are kitchen to spent.

...its total bullshit. But by your reasoning, my opinon as to its greatness would weigh as much as Hemmingways opinion that it sucked.

Mojo is completely right in his statements regarding liking or disliking Jim Morrisons poetry/lyrics.

Just because you have a background in litterature and english doesn't mean that a person who disagrees with you is ignorant. It simply means that they don't like the way the specific piece was written.

What can i say, but "Wow, some people"....your playin a game of semantics, and frankly, its regressing to childish banter. The thread is whether something (or someone) sucks or not. Something that sucks, generally (actually by ALL accounts) is something that is not good. You see, when you take the time to think things out, things start to make sense. Try it. Its fun.

I say this b.c. statements like Morrison sucks implicitly means that Morrison is not good. Your clearly not a literature buff, so maybe a math problem will help:
Sucks= Not Good
Morrison=Sucks
Morrison= Not Good.

You see there, its not so hard. Its called the transitive property. It actually popped up on a post earlier today. Quite popular for explaining things to stubborn people.

So before we expend anymore energy on this, do us both a favor and take a deep breath, think long and hard about what you want to say, then, think long and hard about whether or not what your gonna type will actually convey the idea your are trying to express, and, finally, decide to keep yer trap shut and take this one on the chin.

I've been watching this from afar, and you seem to be the one splitting hairs on semantics. In the simplest and basest terms -- good is a subjective term. People have divided opinions as to what is and isn't good. Your so-called expertise does not make your own opinion any more valid.

Liking or disliking Jim Morrison has absolutely zero weight as to whether or not someone is actually a "literature buff." Jim Morrion is not some kind of gauge that universally determines someone's intelligence or appreciation of literature. Someone starting a thread about something sucking on an internet message board isn't the kind of thing people typically take to be a declarative statement as to whether or not something ACTUALLY and DEFINITIVELY sucks. Me saying he sucks doesn't mean he ACTUALLY sucks. You saying he's great doesn't mean he's ACTUALLY great.

You see there, its not so hard. Its called the transitive property. It actually popped up on a post earlier today. Quite popular for explaining things to stubborn people.

How am I being stubborn? I'm one the one saying over and over again that everyone's opinions here are ultimately valid on something as subjective as popular music. You're the one trying to narrowly define what is good or bad, as if there are universal standards that must be adhered to, or what "literature" actually is based on precise determinations and how only some people are allowed to comment or have opinions on it. But yeah, I'M clearly the one being stubborn and narrowminded.

So before we expend anymore energy on this, do us both a favor and take a deep breath, think long and hard about what you want to say, then, think long and hard about whether or not what your gonna type will actually convey the idea your are trying to express, and, finally, decide to keep yer trap shut and take this one on the chin.

Just stop trying so hard. We get it...you love Jim Morrison's work. Not everyone else feels the same way. That's life.

I never liked Hemmingway. Does this make me ignorant?

Mojo is completely right in his statements regarding liking or disliking Jim Morrisons poetry/lyrics.

Just because you have a background in litterature and english doesn't mean that a person who disagrees with you is ignorant. It simply means that they don't like the way the specific piece was written.

I don't like Morrisons lyrics. I LOVE Joe Strummers.

I don't like Ernest Hemmingway. I LOVE Edgar Allan Poe.

it doesnt make you ignorant. Not liking someone is different than saying they suck.
If you were to say hemmingway sucked (or, in the alternative, was a shitty writer) then yes, you would then be ignorant.

There are certain things in life people should feel comfortable discussing. They generally feel comfortable discussing things they are knowledgable about- not just things they have an opinion about. For instance, i would not feel comfortable giving a speech at a Douchebag Convention, whereas someone like, well, lets just say Mojopin would feel right at home.

I say this to illustrate the point that Opinions are indeed very much like assholes, in that everyone has one. But pleeeeeeeeaaasssee spare me this 14th amendment "equality" bullshit that everyone's opinion is ok, that everyone should be given the same amount of deference, and its safe to talk out of one's ass.

Its not.

It's also ironic that you're accusing other people of being childish when you're the one who can only reply to people's ridiculous comments about a famous singer with personal insults towards other posters here over and over again.

Actually, everyone was having fun making abusrd declarations about Jim Morrion and the Doors. You're the one that felt the need to take it personally and try and turn something done to bust some balls, like 99% of everything else here, into something faux-academic and personal.

It's not an issue of "equality." We're talking about personal tastes in music. How can you possibly expect for such a thing to all fall a certain way?

You dont like something fine.
But making blanket statements like "______sucks" is just ignorant.

By that logic, a blanket statement in favor of Morrion would be just as "ignorant." This all boils down to you not liking someone else's opinion. "Jim Morrison sucks" is an opinion. "I don't like Jim Morrison" and "Jim Morrison sucks" are ultimately the same thing. They're both subjective opinions. Just because someone says the latter as a declarative staement doesn't actually give it any more meaning besides being someon's an opinion...it's just someone using hyperbole for a dramatic and/or humorous effect.

We all have our biases, and of course mine colors my statements.

Were all of his writings brilliant? Far from it....but some of them were....and by brilliant, i really mean brilliant (not in the overly used british sense of the word)

But Morrison was more than a poet- i think (and it may very well be substantiated) that he was the precursor for how we now define rock stars. Smart, funny and mischevious, he blended so much with an air of mystery that, b/c of current pop culture (vis a vis MTV Cribs) will never be seen again.

His name shouldnt be "besmirched" (if i may be so bold) by people who dont get it. the man is dead, but his name lives on. Much more then any of us can say about any of us on this message board.

All of this is just a respone in general...thinking outloud, I guess...

Couldn't it be just as easily argued when you're talking about something as vague and varying as "getting it," maybe the people who are pro-Morrison are the ones who don't "get it?" I'm not saying that that is the case...it's just very easily flipped that way and arguably has the same amount of meaning, which is, ultimately, nothing.

the man is dead, but his name lives on. Much more then any of us can say about any of us on this message board.

Well, that doesn't really prove anything. There's plenty of awful people who are going to be infinitely more famous or remembered than anyone here.

I'm really not taking shots or anything with this response...it's just that those kind of points don't really prove anything for or aganst Morrison.

To answer this honestly for a change, Jim Morrison was a kid who grew up smoking pot, drinking, and dropping acid in LA in the 1960's. He was dead at 27.

Was he an incredible lyricist and songwriter? No. Could he have been? We'll never know. He was, however, one of the most unique and charismatic front men in the history of rock 'n' roll and has been emulated dozens of times by countless bands.

Badly, I might add.

I think people need to remember the Doors first album is 40 fucking years old! It was recorded in 1966 and released in 1967.

I think some of his lyrics weren't exceptional but a lot were damn good.

And as a comparison I copied these lyrics from a thread on the Raconteurs new album:

I'll readily admit I like the White Stripes, but I think they're hugely overrated, similar to the Doors...the difference I see between the two is the Doors had a deluded sense of self-importance to their music on top of all the hype people were throwing at them, and that's what drives me nuts most about them.

I wrote that on the spot. What do ya think?

Morrison, at this moment, is probably my favorite musician (well the Doors really), but I have no problem whatsoever with someone who doesn't like them. But to say they're overrated or shit definitely will get a major defensive reaction. Its just kind of ignorant to say that someone whose music you may not 'get' or be into-- is therefore shit. And to explain away the millions of devout fans who disagree with you by saying the band is overrated is a little weak.

ok, you lil shit...i tried to make nice, but you wont have it.

I think my point is made. thank you very much. :smoke:

but are there really scientifically defineable terms that make a writer or artist great? or does all that still come back to-- the prevailing experts really liked him/her?

how many writers that we now perceive to be brilliant were unappreciated in their own time? its no different with musicians or painters.

i could care less what the experts say.....

if you have some shitty garage sale painting universally believed to be shit, but you love it, and it brings you joy-- then that painting has merit. and who gives a shit if the pianist is not regarded to have any brilliance, or the guitarist isn't a technical genius or if the singer doesn't have .....well you get my point...if your music reaches people, and touches them in some way....you've created beautiful music.

Long story short.......(too late i know) you can't ever be overrated, because the measure of how good of an artist you are...is how many people love the art you've created.

wow, when did i start sounding like such a hippie?

The Clash-Death Or Glory (lyrics by Joe Strummer)

Every cheap hood strikes a bargain with the world
And ends up making payments on a sofa or a girl
Love 'n' hate tattooed across the knuckles of his hands
The hands that slap his kids around 'cause they don't understand

How death or glory becomes just another story
How death or glory becomes just another story
'N' every gimmick hungry yob digging gold from rock 'n' roll
Grabs the mike to tell us he'll die before he's sold
But i believe in this-and it's been tested by research
That he who fucks nun will later join the church

From every dingy basement on every dingy street
I hear every dragging handclap over every dragging beat
That's just the beat of time-the beat that must go on
If you been trying for years-then we already heard your song

Better than the best Morrison ever wrote.

im not going to argue which lyrics were better. the very idea of that is absurd to me. i dont even think you CAN determine that. and even if one were better in some measurable fashion, that wouldn't make the other less worthy.

whatever. i love jim. i love his lyrics. i love his poetry. i loved his performances and i loved whatever it is i hear in his voice when he sings. i love his style. i love the sound of his voice. i love the band. i love their sound. i love the music they created. i love the way they gelled and were able to follow him and his travels through a song. i love his attitude. i love his story. i love the 'feel' of the music, and i love the feeling i get when i listen.

Ok, so going by board response in two different threads:

Daniel Johnson - genius
Jim Morrison - overated hack

Madness I tell you..madness.

I think you have to take into context the time period that the Doors became poplular also. They came along at a time when the country was very unsettled and the majority of musical acts were still relatively clean cut. Then along comes this drugged up/drunk frontman who was capable of blurting out anything at anytime including live television. Voila..a legend is born.

I would be interested in finding out how many of you that consider Morrison a hack would give Kurt Cobain a genius label. They are both legends partly because they left before we found out thier true potential.

It was my opinion. Also in my opinion, I like lyrics that can be abstract but also have a very direct meaning. IE, loads of Strummer's lyrics were political. Morrison's, to me, were abstract for the sake of being abstract and didn't have any real meaning. For a lot of them anyway.

And of course we can't be friends.

Kidding of course. I just get to chose the music when we drive together:innocent:

I usually lsiten to Gregorian Chants on my way to school. I'm trying to bring it back.

I think you'd enjoy what I like to lsiten to while driving. Lately it's been a lot of dub from the likes of King Tubby and Mikey Dread.

who?

Gregorian Chants were popular back in the time of Pope Gregory. I don't really listen to them. It's basically a series of moans and speech.

King Tubby was from Jamaica and as big on reggae and more so dub. He was shot and killed after leaving his home because he thought someone was breaking in.

Mikey Dread was also Jamaican and was big on playing reggae on the radio and giving life to the underground reggae scene. He was influential in the life of Joe Strummer and coproduced some songs on The Clash album Sandanista!. He died last saturday at the age of 54.

It's very relaxing and great music to listen to while driving through New Brunswick or Plainfield or any 'ghetto'.

ok but given what you just said....wouldn't it follow that you must think the millions and millions who adore and adored them are just morons who wouldn't know good music if it fell on them? or delusional? or uneducated?

That's what I was trying to say earlier...if a band or act is as popular as the Doors, Led Zep or even someone like Hannah Montana for that matter, there has got to be some redeeming value to them, even if we personally do not see it.

Call me Petey Positive, but it seems counterproductive to spend all sorts of time sitting there listening to music you hate just so you can deconstruct it and present reasons why you hate it. If I don't like someone's music, I can't even tell you why, because it would never get a second spin.

Then your name is Mojo and you are referring to 98% of music that people enjoy.

Jim Morrison is the most overrated piece of shit to ever hit the music industry. His music is generally bullshit "poetry" from a drugged out clown. Just because you try to appear to have depth & intellect doesn't mean that you have it.

There is a moment on one of the Doors live albums where Jim starts talking to the crowd about astrology and how he is a Sagittarius (I don't recall which album) but you hear a girl yell out "So am I!" and that she's a believer and whatnot. Then Jim says "I think it's all a bunch of bullshit" and you hear the girl scream "So do I!"

You all wish you had that power.

I have the shittest taste in music that's why I love the Doors. Particularly Morrison Hotel and Waiting for the Sun albums. What the fuck's wrong with me, I don't even like the album with twentieth century fox on it or the trademark songs that they play 50 million fucking times on 104.3!?!?!?!?!@?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! CCC needs-a-public-stonin' that commy fag

On the other side o' arguments, in defense of the Doors' greatness, HTG said millions can't be wrong but eh... them dudes in 1930's Germany were heinously wrong and there were millions of happy Nazi sympathizers who believed the shit they were shovelin'...

Millions of people to this day refuse to believe in evolution...which, from my point of view, means millions are motherfuckin' wrong....

And millions of people actually somehow cared (for at least a short period of their lives) about Britney Spears' "music". Again, FUCKING WRONG.

But wrong's in the eye of beholder. Lots of anti-semites in the world today who would disagree with my first point, plenty of Earls who disagree with #2, and you get the idea. Fuck #3 I don't give a shit about her ever.

Btw, I said I like the Doors.

She knows I'm not big into him or the doors and when I said I thought he was overrated the mood quickly shifted into disbelief from her. She didn't mind that I disagreed with her, but she just doesn't get it. She did mention the fact I never tripped could be why I don't get it. Apparently when I do it will all make perfect sense.

I don't think that to call someone a genius you need to be under the influence. That's being a genius only under certain circumstances. But hey, to each their own.

I have my idols who I look at being awesome and I know people will disagree with me. It's what it is.

I'm very surprised that this thread is 10 pages long and only 9 votes. I haven't read the whole thing so if my post is just a repeat of what other had said, sorry.

I voted that Jim "Sucks not at all". I enjoy the music and I like his voice. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics. I am pretty sure his writing isn't as deep as some people think. I think he was running a bit as far as that is concerned. But The Doors had a great sound and he was an interesting frontman that kids still listen to today.

I don't think that to call someone a genius you need to be under the influence. That's being a genius only under certain circumstances.

I agree with you. I would not call him a genius. That word gets thrown around way too much for musicians and actors. I would call him talented.

Wow....i left this thread 2 days ago, and people are still going on and on.....gotta love the internet!

Clearly, the participation on this thing goes beyond jim and is actually more about personal tastes (although i think the thread should really have been titled "Do you like Jim Morrison", rather than "Does Jim Morrison Suck", b/c the latter asks the reader to make a definitive statement about his talents instead of asking the reader about thier particular tastes)

So we should just let it go.
