Ok, imagine it's the middle of the night, you're in the woods and you hear that noise. And then you hear it getting closer. Are those legs? Where's the head!?

That thing is f'n creepy.

Un.

Freaking.

Real.

That was an absolutely astounding demonstration. That is some amazingly advanced movement. The "natural" balance and fluidity of movement was unlike anything I have seen in a robot.

I was watching that and kept thinking about the robotic horses from Vampire Hunter D (I know - uber-geeky). I always thought they were really cool, but now they are one step closer to reality.

Completely amazing.

I saw this video last week and it freaked the shit out of me. Imagine what they could do with that thing if the could find a way to silence that whine? Scary.

That will happen soon enough. Every married man in America is looking for that technology...

I agree. Very cool...and very creepy.

But am I the only one who thinks it looks less like a deer and more like a 4 legged fly?
Especially with that buzzing noise....those big bug "eyes".

I didnt notice the eyes but I did notice that somewhere across the screen it said this thing can carry about 200 pounds!!

Watch it again and pay attention to the part where it starts galloping and then jumps!!!!

That "thing" has way better balance than I do. That ice patch would have busted my tailbone. Im going on a diet so I can ride one of those bitches to the top of Everest.

[insert Stepford Wives reference here]

They certainly are getting there with the technology.

I remember when Jurassic Park was first being conceived for film, one of Speilbergs idea was to do what he always wanted to do with the shark in Jaws: build working robot dinos that can walk as real as anything alive. That way, you can lessen/completely avoid CGI, since you have a real thing running around the set. But he wanted real; real movements, not the stilted Frankenstein walk we all know.

What Speilberg found out real quick: the technology still doesnt exist. And they told him developing it would be so costly blah blah... so we got CGI.

The study of biped walking is amazing, you find out walking is improbable at best; two legged walking is so insanely complex and subtle with so much input from so many areas, and we do it as if it was nothing at all.

[When we are walking we are actually in a constant state of falling, you are always falling forward with each step and catching yourself with the next; hence an unseen bump/rock an inch high can put us right on our asses. Dont take walking for granted. ever.]

Four legged walking? Well, the state of the art is what you see in the vids. Very very impressive; but what everyone else said, its gotta get more efficient, quicker, smaller, lighter. It will. Its inevitable.

There's a great Laurie Anderson song on her 1st album about this!!!

"Walking & Falling

I wanted you.
And I was looking for you.
But I couldn't find you.
I wanted you.
And I was looking for you all day.
But I couldn't find you.
I couldn't find you.
You're walking.
And you don't always realize it, but you're always falling.
With each step you fall forward slightly.
And then catch yourself from falling.
Over and over, you're falling.
And then catching yourself from falling.
And this is how you can be walking and falling at the same time."

I think they should program it to defend itself and go after that guy who kicks it!

I didn't really get it when Ron was talking about it... what's so scary about a robot deer?? When I saw this... I GOT IT. That is not right.

It's so lifelike I felt bad for it when the guy kicked it.

I think this is a horrible idea. Robots should have to take any shit we give them, the last thing I want is a robot that can fight back.

Well, as their slogan states: "Nothing insect-crawls like a Deere."
