I went in for some chest pains last november. My doctor thinks it was a combination of heartburn and eating too fast, such that my esophagus was raw. I've been changing how I eat since then to avoid that.

I lived in China and Taiwan for five years and I found Americans abroad not only were just as culturally sensitive as other Westerners (if not more) but a higher percentage could speak Chinese than other foreigners. Of course, this is just my own experience but I do think the Ugly American is a tired, old stereotype. I'm sure you can still find crusty old Americans speaking English loudly, slowly, and aggressively to Parisian waiters but I find younger Americans are some of the most considerate travelers out there.
