So, I got engaged, moved to Phoenix, and apparently this signaled my dormant chickenpox that it was time to have a party on my nerves.

I've lived as a medical mishap since birth. I'm ok with it, as in, i deal with it, in other words, when life gets boring, you walk around with a insulin syringe sticking out of your backside or arm to see what type of reactions you get. My thyroid ate itself, my adrenals occassionally pull a magic disappearing act, my uterus is swiss-cheese (not edible), i know about a large majority of medications, their generics, their formulas down to their chemical compounds. I went to med school, not because i wanted to help other people.... no, i'm a selfish ass and just wanted to help myself. Right. I'm 27 and have more organ functionality issues than your grandmother....and she's dead. Ok, i'll admit to it, i have a auto-immune-disorder. No, not AIDS, not HIV. auto immune, as in, instead of those magical cells in the body fighting off bad stuff, they got a little overzealous and destroy...everything. There's a party in my body, why am I the only one not having fun?

Sooooooo. How are the buddayyyyyyyyysssss doing? I'm about 3 hours behind regularly scheduled east coast programming, so i've been a bit out of the loop for....3 months. Oh, and i got this really nasty allergic reaction. I thought it was hives, but it was more blistery looking than mosquito bite looking. Yeah, so these hives spread and itched pretty bad...then they burned....then i had a 102 fever and thought 'this is some allergic reaction, best i party on over to the doctor'. *blinks* Now that i've suffered the pain of bringing a prescription for Valtrex (think giant barney purple pill) and vicodin to the pharmacy to be filled, and rabidly exclaiming "it's shingles, not crotch cooties!".... i think i have a word of advice for the RF world:

Shingles suck. If you've had chickenpox, you can get Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster (not an STD and not contagious). Thusly, if you have had chickenpox, you should party your ass on over to the happy doctor man and get a herpes zoster vaccine. Why? Shingles suck. Blemishes and itching isn't the end. There's pain. I can't explain the pain, but i daily feel rather black and blue and having a bed sheet on me hurts.

I'd beg for death, but I companied myself with a much bleaker fate: i purchase a computer with Vista home Premium on it. Did i mention that HP's only come with 200w PSU, and MINIMUM req'd PSU to just run vista is 200w? Pardon me, but i have about a billion things to plug in those magical little usb ports and, um, then random blue screen with POWER DRIVER FAILURE annoys the shit out of me. Does anyone at HP know anything about PSU's? of course not. oh well, it's a good machine, i just have to rip out the PSU and replace it with something....more powerful than a 200w hamster. All this because my XP shuttle died, which led to getting a external shell to rip out the HD and make it usb to get 5 years of stuff i should have backed up off it and thank the dear lord of technology and grace that I did recover my crap.

fuck vista, and fuck the shingles.

ps:

it's SO cold in phoenix...that 70 degrees under the shade of the palm tree is killing me. *grins*. I also weight a suave 126lbs from 176lbs back in october. I might be in pain, but at least i'm feeling pretty sexy, minus the pox.....

Nice to hear from you Skellington... so sorry about the shingles. My Dad got them a few years ago and I was shocked how much pain he was in. Hope you recover quickly.

So you and David Letterman have one thing in common (one more thing in common?).
Sorry about all your troubles. Phoenix is pretty cool, though. My sister just moved back to DC from Phoenix, so I don't know if i'll ever be out there again.

On another note I just got a new job literally around the corner from DuClaw in Fell's. I'll raise a glass the next time i'm in there (hopefully soon).

Skellington, I hear ya. I have shingles right now. One minute I feel like someone is stabbing me in the back, the next minute I am being stabbed in the ribs. Once the stabbing sensation goes away, it starts to burn. Sleeping and sitting both suck. I wouldn't wish shingles on my worst enemy.

please take care of yourselves..... Skelly and Holes.... shingles are no joke.

if the pain is truly unbearable, some medications can provide relief. check with your doc to see if you are a candidate for Lidocaine patches, or a tricyclic antidepressant which can also help combat the pain.

hang in there!

Funny story.

When I was 21, I had shingles very bad. So I go to the doctor for some meds, some ointment, SOMETHING! He gives me some shit, then tells me that shingles usually occurs in middle aged men, and he's concerned thAt my IMMUNE system might be DEFICIENT.

He says I should get an hiv test at a private doctor (he doesnt do them), or I could go to the gay men's health crisis center and get one for free. Now, this is when AIDS was still pretty new, so I dont blame him for guessing me gay... but then he says, "It's your own choice if u wanna get the test. Personally, I wouldnt wanna know. I mean, if you dont have it--good news! But if you do, your life's ruined. I would rather not know"...

This is a DOCTOR saying this!!

Anyway, I went back to work on the train, and just felt I had aids and my life was over. What do I do? Where do I go to die? Why didnt I start having sex sooner? Now its all over. I got dizzy and had to get off the train and throw up. I was in a panic for about a week, went to a private doctor, and I think it took 2 weeks to come back negative.

So...uh...the moral of the story is, if youre under 40 (and a male..not sure about females), and get shingles... get an aids test for fun.

Meanwhile, Skelly and Holes... get well soon. It's not only painful, it's gross!!!

Jeez, Skelly...if it's not one thing it's another huh?

Sorry to hear about the health issues and the Vista nightmare. I hope everything resolves itself soon.

As far as the vaccine - I was unaware that there was one available for people who previously had chicken pox. I do know that my 12 year old niece is currently recovering from a brutal case of Shingles, which is hitting more and more young children because they're all getting vaccinated for chicken pox. Kind of a catch-22.

I'll look into the pros and cons of the herpes zoster vaccination.

Poor Skellington! Shingles SUUUCCKKK! I know exactly what you mean about a bed sheet hurting. I had to wear baggy hippy dresses for 3 weeks because I couldn't stand clothing to touch me and couldn't wear jeans. The only good thing about my case was I had them around the nerve in my lower back. Poor David Letterman had them follow the nerve in his head and around his eye! That had to be horrible. I hope your shingles aren't in the same spot!
I hope you feel better soon. Hang in there--they go away eventually.

Doing good Skell. Please take care of yourself, and try to post more now that you've got a box. Vista sucks. Can you reinstall XP, using the license from your old machine?

I'm hoping for you to have a speedy recovery, and can start enjoying Phoenix soon. I've been there, it's a great place.

Yay! Someone doing good!

I have waged war with Vista. I finally cleaned it up enough that everything is running, i'm recording, and nothing is crapping out or loosing power. While doing this, I started a MAC savings, formatted my other box, and am learning Linux. I just read that Microsoft is dumping Vista in about 2 years and releasing Windows '7'. Right. I'm done. It's time I got even more computer saavy and beat this bitch with hit.

There is not much to enjoy in Phoenix, but I have enjoyed Tucson, Sedona and Jerome very much! Also hit up Superstition, where the movie 'U-Turn' was filmed.

All in favor?

I didnt know that so many people had shingles. I thought it was this archaic disease that no one got anymore. Hang in there skelly. Rock those painkillers like youve never rocked before.
