Easily one of the most overlooked Motown singers around. I have similar feelings about Solomon Burke, but not as strong as for Sam Cooke.

Overlooked?
He's widely been regarded as the best and his 'hits' catalog is unreal.
Overlooked?
Nahhh
He's the man and he isn't Motown at all.

Soul and/or rhythm and blues singers. Motown is a very specific term applied to artists on the Motown label, and at least up until the early 70s, there was a very specific Motown sound.

Gvac has no actual soul himself, but he fakes it with impeccable taste.

Not necessarily. It's really about acts signed to the Motown label given the Motown instrumental backing and production.

Mikeyboy is right. Sam Cooke didn't need Motown and Motown didn't need him. He's a Southern Soul Singer and never signed with the label at Motown.
He's the black Jim Morrison.
