While in the past, you had 10 kids so that 4 or 5 would live. Now you're having 10 babies and 10 of those are living. In the US and in Europe this happened, but people started having less kids, and eventually most 1st world countries are at a 0% or negative growth rates. But in the 3rd world, they aren't at that point. And certain presures *coughReligion*cough may keep them growing at the current rates. (this does not apply to China, of course)
