Until Mollys opened, i had never heard of the website www.yelp.com and when i started searching for Molly's yelp kept coming up.

I was completely shocked to learn that they are HUGE even in NY, and I had never heard of them, and i still never hear anyone talking about them.

They are a site for regular people like you and me to review everything-- but mostly its taken off with restaurants and stuff. I now yelp several times a day-- to review restaurants, to see what people think of restaurants I'm going to and even to find new places to go.

One of the best features is their search for restaurants. I love that you can click on a map to exactly where you are and set a radius from that exact spot and then click on the type of restaurant you're interested in, and price range. Its great for in the city. Other sites let you search by town, or even neighborhood, but half the time in NYC im in between neighborhoods. Like if you're at 57th and 7th, you dont want midtown east, or midtown west, or the upper west side-- you want to know the restaurants in the 10 blocks around where you are to grab something for lunch, in all directions.

Also, they have a dorky little friend aspect to it where you can befriend people whose reviews you like, put up pictures of yourself, comment on other peoples reviews, and even send silly little hugs and waves to people you like. Its a cute little community there.

So my question is, do you guys know about this and have you been using it? Or is it just me? and if you are...lets be friends!!!

Never heard of it before, but it looks like it will come handy when I travel for work. I always have a hard time finding a decent place to eat when I'm out of town.
Thanks.

Cool site HTG. Even for my non-big ciy area, there are 13000 listings.

I just got back from South San Francisco (not the same as San Francisco) and my GPS was great for showing restaurants around the area, but I had no idea if they were any good or not. Now all I have to do is check with yelp.com for suggestions, and if it turns out the food stinks I can blame HTG.

I Yelp in Boston as much as possible, but I usually get lazy and don't write reviews.

Also, my friend's company just launched Zeer.com, which is like Yelp, only for just organic stuff, I think.

If you haven't heard about Yelp Elite yet, it supposedly the best. Some of my friends are "elite". Yelp throws special Elite parties with free booze and food like every month.

awww maaaaaaaaaaaaaan you have to be invited to be in yelp elite. sure i can pass for someone who people listen to for advice but it turns out you have to be irreverant and funny too! dammit! ok everyone start marking each others reviews useful and funny!!!!!!

oh and i dont know if this is new or i just never noticed before, but now when you do a search by city or zip or location or whatever, it gives you an option of what kind of distance radius you want to use--

birds eye view of x miles, driving distance of x miles, walking distance 1 mile, or what I call im fat and lazy and need someting here and now distance (4 blocks).

This is awesome...I have lived in my crappy midwestern city for like 6 years and we are always looking for something that is NOT a chain resturant which is hard to find here because there is an Applebees on every corner. There were a lot of resturants for my city so thank you for posting about this I definately think you should receive the elite yelper status.

That's a great site Kathleen. One of my favorite sites is Roadfood.com (http://www.roadfood.com/) It's a little lacking for some states, but it gives me an idea for places to try when I'm travelling around the country. They always welcome suggestions for new places to try and review. Click on "Restaurants" at the top and use the drop-down box to choose a state -- or use the state menu at the bottom of the page.

HollyEats.com (http://www.hollyeats.com/index.html) is kind of a similar site. Check out the topics/areas on the left hand side of the page.

i never run out. there's always more. hotels, parks, movie theaters, bars (love doing that, cuz i hate not knowing which theaters are good when im away from home), even websites (i just reviewed hopstop.

i've started doing searches in different areas i want to go to, and bookmarking places i want to visit and that usually unearths some place i'd forgotten i've been and i review it.

why is this so addicting? i can't believe i found a new way to be a total dork.

Madam's Organ was originally a combination art gallery punk/New Wave club further south on 18th St. In 1992 it reopened as a blues and bluegrass bar. Madam's Organ moved to its present location in 1997 after a temporary closure.

Madam's Organ was originally a combination art gallery punk/New Wave club further south on 18th St. In 1992 it reopened as a blues and bluegrass bar. Madam's Organ moved to its present location in 1997 after a temporary closure.

Huh. I didn't know that. I haven't been to Madam's Organ in years.

Huh. I didn't know that. I haven't been to Madam's Organ in years.

I was there maybe 5 years ago. Not all that impressive anymore.

There is sometimes a bit of punk at Asylum next door. And then i've played a few shows down on U Street, at the U-Turn (now something else), DC9, and Velvet Lounge.

Yesterday I went to New Hope, PA with friends. After a couple of hours of walking (and not buying anything. Budgets you know!) we decided to go to a mexican place (http://www.thebluetortillarestaurant.com/) on North Main Street. It was awful and SUCH a rip off.

This morning my friend sent me a Yelp link for the restaurant. Bad reviews for the most part. I joined and typed a sternly worded review about said restaurant. Now the William Foster (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106856/) is coming out in me and I want my voice to be heard!!!

I'm so behind the times!!!

Indeed. I've had some great experiences and some very bad ones too. The beauty of Yelp is that you can either promote the good or warn against the bad.

Ditto. And as I told HTG before I wish she lived down here because she has a knack for scooping a variety of good places. When I go up to NYC, her reviews will be my guide.

The bad thing is that when I first joined up, I immediately listed all my favorite places right up front with not very compelling reviews. I may have to go back and update those to better make the case for them.

I found the chicken place talked about on the show through HTG's yelp. I was in the neighborhood, but I didn't get a chance to go. It was out of my way.

I just went to look at her yelp page, and I have to say, I think it's pretty funny that she reviewed Falling Water, probably one of the most famous houses in the United States.

"Hey, when in Paris, check out a painting called the 'Mona Lisa'. And I'll tell you one thing, that 'Eiffel Tower' sure is tall."

They definitely yelp strip clubs. One thing leads to another. I love when the reviews says that the girls "earn" their money. LOL

What a scam. I'm guessing Yelp will be over very soon.

Yelp Is Now Pissing Off Internet Pioneers (http://gawker.com/5496622/)

Indeed, Yelp's dependence on a cadre of regular users is a "tough" break for many businesses besides Greenspun's flight club. It places disproportionate influence in the hands of a limited group of people with plenty of money to spend in restaurants, bars and shops; with time on their hands to write reviews; and an inclination to work free at advancing Yelp's bottom line, without getting so much as a full-name byline in return. Restaurants and other merchants feel obliged to wine and dine this group at Yelp-sanctioned "Yelp Elite" events and less formal contexts, leaving ordinary users to guess at which reviews have been influenced by payola and which haven't.

Then there are merchants who, like Greenspun, can't get Yelp reviews from their happy customers to stick, and don't feel like paying Yelp to get a "favorite review" moved to the top of their Yelp listing, a favor Yelp openly acknowledged selling to customers ("clearly marked"). Said merchants have been suing like mad; since February 24, when we posted a veterinarian's class-action lawsuit alleging Yelp extortion, a spa owner filed yet another class action, nine other business filed a class-action and a furniture restorer filed his own suit.

ha! point taken but I was also reviewing the tour which you're forced to take, which is a bit pricier than seeing the eiffel tower, and pretty time consuming. and since almost nobody would have a reason to happen to be in that neighborhood (its an hour south of pittsburgh) i definitely think people would want to know if its worth it to make a long trip there, pay a good amount of money, and spend over an hour with their guides. for me, it was. but if it had been a shitty tour, i might have bailed on the whole idea.

also, i wish i had known before i headed out there that there are other wright buildings nearby to check out (some that you can even rent and spend the weekend in) and that you kind of have to carefully plan out your day if you want to hit more than one.

Yelp Is Now Pissing Off Internet Pioneers (http://gawker.com/5496622/)

Outside of the favorite review thing, it seems like they are a victim of their own concept. It is really impossible to be fair when it comes to the weighting of the ratings, or to prevent the whole "yelp elite" pampering that apparently goes on.

Im not sure i get the criticism there. I have no idea whether any of the lawsuits have merit-- if the allegations are true that part would be a genuine criticism, but the rest of that story really looks like the writer is just trying to find problems.

I have a hard time seeing the Yelp Elite Events as payola. The reviews of those events end up in an 'event' thread where anyone reading them knows that its not the restaurant being reviewed...but the party.

The restaurants who host or contribute to those events are hoping that the 'elite' reviewers will like the place enough to come back and check it out for real. Ive also seen people be brutally honest in their reviews of the events, sometimes negatively, so Im not sure the big payola fear is genuine.

Besides its not like yelp reviews are some official city rating. Anyone who uses it knows these are regular people writing the reviews who are subject to all the biases that can affect anyones opinion on anything.

When I read reviews with that in mind, I find they've been REALLY helpful, not only in finding new places to go, but in figuring out what are the best things to order at some places and at figuring out where not to go. Its not perfect, but it is a great resource.

A.J.

I can see where the Elite thing might be a bias. But for the most part, those folks seem to be pretty impartial.

The problem with YelpDC is that it seems that you see the same few places reviewed over and over again.

Maybe I'm just jealous that my own stellar reviews are being overlooked. :glurps:

It really depends on what area of the city you are in. Some places have a night life, and other places die once the work crowd goes home.
