I have to admit, Im a little embarrassed of being an american these days.
Lately I just feel a tiny bit ashamed of this once great country of ours.
Its no wonder we are the laughing stock of the world. Obsessed with money and talentless celebrities.

We live in a reality tv world. Our society has become obsessed with bullshit.

Seriously, what is there to really be proud of these days?

The hot dog eater? Who proudly holds up the american flag with a mouth full of franks?

We are just as evil as the next country. we just hide it better.
This is a land of robotic sheep. Artificial pride.

Give it up america. You have jumped the shark.

how do we hide it
we are blatant in our portrayal of ourselves as the biggest douche bags in the universe
we couldnt fucking care less about the environment
we drive 3 ton diesel trucks to buy milk(and milk is fucking evil)
we fucking rob who ever we like of their civil liberties
we are completely intolerant of our points of view

we are almost at the top of the asshole pyramid and we fighting to stay there

People seem to expect America to be this perfect "shining city on the hill". We're not perfect and we never have been.

So if you've lost faith or feel ashamed of America well thats on you my friend. Maybe if people didn't pretend America was this flawless nation they wouldn't constantly feel "let down" or "embarrassed" of what we really are.

i'm still proud to be an American, warts, scars, skid marks and all.

(Cue patriotic music and giant American flag)

I love this country for the principles it espoused and freedoms it created.....and i will ALWAYS love the country.

Dont deride the country, deride the leadership.

America is bigger than the Bush's and the Clintons and the VH-1's and the like....

True, the condition of the country is ailing, and continues to do so, but you dont hate your body for harboring cancer, you hate the cancer.

You know, I was having lunch a while back with a table full of foreigners: a German, a Kiwi, a Brit and a Mexican. (I know, it sounds like a joke but it isn't)

The typical American bashing started up as it always does - especially with the Europeans - and I pretty much took over the table. I'm an American, and I'm really fucking cool. I'm not a Fox News Republican nutjob. I'm a photographer and I live in Queens with my wife and we're really fucking cool in a manner that I would call American. We're open to things, creative, and we live a great life that we made ourselves.

Basically I said, Hey, I know the people you're talking about and I'm not so crazy about them either, but there aren't any fat lazy stupid people in Germany or Britain or Canada? Of course there are, but it's easier to point fingers at fat stupid Americans. But most of us aren't. We don't wave the flag every day. We don't chant anthems every morning. But we're cool interesting people and we're American and there's nothing wrong with that. Why do I have to be responsible or representative for the yahoos in this country? I don't.

I'm me, I'm cool and I'm American. Whoop de damn do.

The current leadership of the country may be a bunch of clowns, but you don't think that other countries haven't had clowns running them at one time or another. Hopefully the next administration, no matter who gets elected, can straighten out some of the problems we're facing, and get the country moving forward again. It's fine not to agree with the current leadership, and to let your feelings be known, thats one of the things that makes America great.

I'm ashamed because most of the people in this country think that either the Republicans or Democrats are looking out for our best interest.

Neither political party is looking out for our best interest. To see so many people think that electing a Democrat will change everything and fix our country is sad and frustrating.
The right and left work hand in hand to fuck us over. Remember all the promises from the left 2 years ago? "If you elect us into power, we will fix everything and bring the troops home immediately". They haven't changed a damn thing.

Example:

Freedom of Speech. The right has a problem with sex. The left has a problem with everything else. Neither side wants freedom of speech.

People seem to expect America to be this perfect "shining city on the hill".

Did you mean to be ironic using that phrase? "City upon the hill" was coined by John Winthrop talking about the New World being the example set for the rest of the supposedly post-millenial world (millenial in the Biblical apocalyptic sense and the post-Reformation Protestant idea that the final millenium, in a broad sense, was upon us). American was basically founded and expanded with the explicit idea that it was the "ciy upon the hill." Millenial thinking has influened America since day one in the regard.

I'm just SO embarrassed by Bush:

"Mission Accomplished"

And the whole CIA operative debacle

And, to be honest, he's come off as so uncouth in international situations it makes our country look so bad.

I liken him to George Costanza and his most famous quote, "It's not a lie if you believe it."

Right now I am seriously thinking this is the beginning of the end of the US as a super power. I'm HOPING Obama can turn this mofo around. If not, I blame Bush for running this country into the ground, much like the oil company (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbusto_Energy) he had.

The dollar is the weakest it's ever been. There are many NYC stores that have signs in their windows stating, "We accept euros."

God damn, GW fucked up this country in a MAJOR way! And, at this point, HE HAS NOTHING TO LOSE hence is little good bye to the G8 summit (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/politics/bush-to-g8-goodbye-from-the-worlds-biggest-polluter-863911.html). Arrogant fucking prick. You know you are on your way out. Have SOME dignity you asshole!

It's almost he ran for the presidency on a dare from his old frat bros.

Sorry, I'm just so peeved right now. I'll NEVER get to sleep!

I don't know how people get caught up in this patriotic bull. Just because you were born on a certain piece of the earth you're supposed to be a loyal American or Italian or German.

I take a much bigger view of things. I consider myself a human from the planet Earth along with everyone else on this planet.

As a wise musician once sang:

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people

I love my country, and our mostly proud history, especially towards the beginning.

However, I am ashamed and embarrassed of the majority of present-day Americans, and by 100% of our current government and legal system. We are so far off the fucking tracks, that nothing but revolution will fix it.

However, I have no desire to die for hundreds of millions of retards who don't even know they're retarded, so fuck revolution, and I am going to leave the country permanently before the end of the decade.

It hard not to hate the US. I mean I was born in Pittsburgh PA where you are told from birth, to be proud, to be a family that supports it's Gov't and to put your trust in the Gov't that has been elected.

I ended up leaving the US 4 days after Bush was re-elected. I decided to move, because I wanted fairer drug laws, and I didn't want my phones tapped and my emails read and I didn't want to be fearful of saying the wrong thing and being arrested for it.

How can you be proud when the country's PEOPLE put Bush into office. I mean it's not like the leadership grew there or where transported into power. Individuals went to voting places and elected that fucker and his whacked out buddies. People that just wanted to make each other richer at the cost of our troops and the cost of our reputation to the rest of the world.

And to top it all off the 25% of those PEOPLE still think that Bush is aces with them. Bush has done so much damage to our position in the world that we have fallen behind in Medical advancements, Educational standings, Fuel preservation, Environmental causes, and so on.

Think about that 25% of the population of the US are happy with how things are. That is criminal not something to be proud of.

It is like the US is stuck back in 2001 and all the shit is piling on top of it.

I honestly am not sure what there is to be proud of, I am sure that there are individuals that feel their life is great , and their are families that don't give a crap about what is going on outside of their bubble of the world, but I guess there will always be people that are happy to stick their head in the sand and suck up anything that the country throws at them because they don't want to know better.

Yeah, I'm with you on that. I just don't understand being proud because you happened to be born somewhere that you had no choice over.

Well this is a difficult question sometimes, do you support family just because you are related to them is somewhat similar. I guess we should say that its nice to be in a place where you have the option of voting for the same thing but a different face every couple of years as opposed to Zimbabwe or other countries that have the same "elected" dictators. Once again I gotta say that the problem is not with the politicians but more so with the people that elect them. When there truly is no good choice a non vote (no confidence) is better than electing the best option. Stand up, demand more and if it isnt there do it yourself.

I am still part of it. I give to Amfar, I donated 2 times to Obama, I donate my time to efforts that benefit recycling programs. I give to the arts.

Just because you leave a country it doesn't mean you leave it behind. I left to feel safer, I still vote, I still write letters to congressmen and senators. I probably do more then the average american living there. So please don't tell me what I can and can't do because I left.

So many people say theyd leave, but when it comes to it, they stay. Hypocrites!
Seriously, you felt compelled to leave, and you did. I hope it's worked out for you and that therell come a day when you feel "safe" enough to come on back.

That said, I disagree with your reasons for leaving, but obviously it's an individual choice, so I wont discredit you on that other than to call you a quitter. I'm glad you still consider yourself an American, and are still active in her politics.

http://z.about.com/d/lost/1/0/D/O/-/-/jack-locke.jpg

I am actually ok with the quitter title because I realize that is what I did. I do hope to return to America some day. Currently my Canadian life if great. I have health care that I am paying for with my tax dollars, my weed comes to me in the mail. My husbands company is thriving and personally I feel that Montreal matched my personal and political philosophy.

The reason I still write letters, and still take part in groups and community efforts in the US is because I am hoping to return sooner rather then later. I do miss America. America is great in theory but the current principle of the place just isn't great to me.

I highlighted the word 'change' in reference to Obama and the Liberal party who are somehow able to convince people like you that America is an awful place.

Please find where I wrote America is an awful place. Direct me to the Liberal party while you're at it; maybe they'll have a candidate I could actually support.

Go to these other places that you feel laugh at us and get back to us all on how bad we have it here.

I know Pin, but I do find it offensive as an American when I hear the uniformed speak that way. Having an opinion is fine and I love the debate, but the original poster could at least have had some facts when making a statement like that.

Hey TeeBone hates the troops!

I think Furie's Mark Twain quote is spot on.

Similar to Ritalin's multicultural teaparty, through work I often have the chance to interact with people from other countries (mostly Europe). They really hate Bush but the smarter ones are able to distinguish between the government and the governed. If there's drinking involved, sometimes there's somebody who pipes up about how Bush and America are ruining the world, blah, blah. The argument that I've thus far disarmed them with is that if you really hate American cultural/political/economic/etc. "imperialism" than you should love George W. Bush because everything he has done has had the effect of lessening America's influence in the world.

At risk of oversimplification, I'll think we'll be a lot happier as a society once we are no longer the alpha dog of the planet. Once we relinquish the idea that we have to be the world's solo policeman and market forces stop us from using such an outsized share of the world's resources (though that process is and will continue to be painful) we'll be able to go about our business (getting & spending for most, enjoying the freedoms that we still have for the rest) without the responsibility that goes with being "The MAN", although we'll still have moral responsibilities as a rich & powerful nation. Our reductions in defense spending will cover up a lot of problems we have now, including the out of control debt.

Here's my rant. Sorry if it's too serious for some people.

I'm embarrassed of some people in my country, I'm embarrassed of some elements (or right now all) of the government, and I'm embarrassed of the general bullshit American viewpoints of entitlement, vindictiveness, and the 'quantity over quality' corporate mentalities that you see now and then... I'm not much for arrogance either, which I've seen displayed plenty of times by my countrymen. But I don't judge the country on the basis of individual groups I dislike.

As such, I am absolutely not embarrassed of this country. Who the fuck am I to look up to? England? Gee, I do believe they fucked that Africa continent up right good and could've given two shits about that. Come to think of it, much of the resentment that America is receiving from the Middle East today was built up from the colonization and imperialism of Western European empires in the 19th+ 20th century... when did America really get involved with all that? A little bit when oil was discovered in the 30's? Anyone who says America's been imperializing the Middle East have no idea what the definition of imperialism is. If we were such imperialists, I'd imagine the Suez Canal Crisis would have ended a tad differently (though threat of Soviet annihilation gives the most ardent war hawks pause I suppose so that's an open debate...)

Ok ok ok...Turkey? We don't ban headscarves and have riot police beat women who do, while universities blacklist them. How about Japan? Oh... the burakumin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burakumin) still exist as the untouchables class of Japan... Everyone knows about China...

Belgium. I do believe they organized legionaire armies that made a sport of hunting the pygmies to near extermination. France. Funded alongside Italy a nuclear reactor for Saddam Hussein during the Iran-Iraq war in the 80's- similar financial interest is what's caused them to cry out in such indignation in 2003- money, not moral human disagreement. Egypt? Ask the Copts how fun it is to try and criticize the government or publicly promote their political views.

So honestly, while America has plenty of vices it is guilty of, I do believe they lack in the degree and depth that 'cultured' nations have plunged into from time to time. That we have shown restraint in our actions speaks volumes. That this nation is capable of self-criticism and people like dirtybird who can honestly say they are ashamed of this country, that is a strong statement to how great it is.

This country had a guilty conscience for what it did to the American Indian less than a century after the unforgivable crimes that were committed against their people... Didn't the Australian government just acknowledge and apologize to the Aboriginies? They sure dragged their feet on that one, silly gooses.

Ok Ok... I'll give it up to Pago Pago + Canada. You guys have been pretty free of committing crimes against humanity far as I know. Plus, Canadian forces were part of D-Day, betcha no one thinks about that! You guys get the CCC moral gold star. 'Gratz.

So yeah. I'm embarrassed by elements of America. But not embarrassed of this country as a whole. And I'd never imagine that the other nations are morally superior to us in any way shape or form- though Americans may have much to learn from other countries, that does not mean they are better than us on the moral totem pole.

Actually, Canada is in the midst of stifling free speech (http://www.dailyinterlake.com/articles/2008/06/20/columns/columns01.txt) for the sake of being politically correct, so Pago Pago wins!!!

This seams as good a place as any to put this. There's a middle school here named after one of the greatest heroes in the Revolutionary War, Daniel Morgan. They are the Daniel Morgan Riflemen (as was Morgan's men). A friend of mine's daughter is a cheerleader there. She told me today, that they aren't allowed to say "Riflemen" in their cheers.

OK. I can sort of see why the Washington Bullets changed their name, because of the reputation of gun violence in DC. How is it bad to say "rifle" in a cheer, when it pays tribute to an American hero?:wallbash:

Originaly i was angry at the original poster and wrote quite the tirade then i changed that to im sad for u. I had thought that this post had died but somone has posted to it again and brought it back into my mind. These are the things that i am embarrassed about.
Im embarrassed:
That my son corrected me for saying cowboys and indians.
That i have to use a gimp parking sticker
that i get free access to state camping sites
that i recieve a discount on my hunting and fishing licenses
That if i wanted to i can't smoke inside a restaraunt of my choosing (I don't smoke any more)
That if i mispeak in a public place or forum i may upset the apple cart and loose my ability to support my family and provide them with what they need.
That I can no longer take my family to a football or baseball game because i can't aford the 70 dollars a ticket for standing room only for my family of 4.
That if i utter a thought or an argument that might be contrary to the bleeding heart libaral stance that Im labled either a racist a schovanist (SP?) or some other term outcast from my social group and looked down upon by those around me.

I had to give this some thought.

I served and now I am a disabled veteran. although I have many frustrating moments that can turn to hours or occasionally a day or two I have not lost the love for my country and what it stands for.

I am frustrated at many of our politicians, illegal immigration, the minority who bitch that social services is not giving them enough money to sit on their ass because they refuse to work, the overwhelmed VA system, People abusing emergency rooms because they lack proper health insurance and knowledge, the under education of our young, jeez I can go on.

One thing I know from living and spending more than just a few days in other countries is that IMO this is still the best country to live in and this justifies my pride.

Did he say it should be cowboys and Native Americans?

Next time let him know that "Native Americans" refer to themselves as Indians. I've read a couple books on their history and even today almost all refer to themselves as Indians. Native American is just a term used in the media and fundraisers.
