Do you think this is a little condescending? In racist way?
I'm at dinner in a Chinese restaurant with some acquaintances.... they're not friends, not like co-workers.. we all practice Aikido so there's a common bond but not really a familiar/friendship thing b/c we're not all from the same dojo either. But I know them.. I've practiced with them for about 2 years.
Anyway, there's one girl ... well-to-do background, intelligent of Chinese descent, yet who is entirely American, who remarks on how MSG is put in food all over Asia and how it "must be a Caucasian thing" at how people tend to have a bad physical reaction to it here. Mono Sodium Glutamate produces an allergic reaction of some sort in (apparently) the Caucasian population.
The thing is - she dropped it in a flip way where it seemed she was aware that it would be controversial .. but also didn't give a shit. I couldn't give a fuck if people want to get wrapped up in that bickering.. especially if it's simply the truth. But there seemed to be some shifting around and uncomfortability at the table afterward.
Dude!

I'm highly offended. I didn't choose to be so sensitive to Mono Sodium Glutamate.
I DIDN'T CHOOSE THIS DAMMIT!

If she was Japanese I'd have the perfect come back but the only thing I know about the chinese is that they think its HILARIOUS to go pee pee in my coke.
If it bothered you then you should have called her out on it.

I'm just saying - it's a grey area. What do you think? It didn't bother me. I titled this thread Racist Bitch? b/c for some reason a thread needs a title - call me crazy but I agree... when that prompt came - I went a little sensational.

So you're Asian? (I kid, I kid...it was a soft ball, I swung, I'm sorry)
I don't know if its as much racist as it is stupid, but often the two go hand in hand.

No - but I can also shovel MSG away with the best of them and am considered caucasian.
I too realized the softball but I'm glad you swung at it. Hup hup! (<--I don't know what that means but it seems appropriate)

Asian-American and in shape, yeah?...sounds hot; Cut her some slack.
It's strange she called it a Caucasian thing, because if anything, it could be an American thing. I'm torn... I hate when I'm supposed to be offended but I'm not.

She might actually have a point. I don't know if there is any racial correlation to MSG allergies. I remember seeing some TV prime time news report about it a decade or so ago. There were some people who were VERY affected by it. The story focused on how hard it was for them to shop, because (since MSG is natural) it didn't always have to be listed in the ingredients label. It could be listed in the "other natural ingredients" category.
All of the people featured in the segment where Caucasian. That could mean one of two things. Either it's an allergy that mostly affects Caucasians, or the producers of the news program were only interested in talking about white people.
Maybe there should be a survey. How many Blacks (you can only include blacks who have no Caucasian blood), Hispanics, Asians, (I'm not going to try to list all of the possible races) etc. have a problem with MSG allergies. Anyway... I don't think it was racist at all. I haven't met her, so I can't agree with, or rule out the "bitch" part.

According to 1995 (http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~lrd/msg.html) it sounds like its all over blown. I dont know enough about it to give any real response though.
You should have said "maybe eating all that dog meat built up an immunity that Caucasians lack".

the awesome chinese restaurant near my university put MSG in some of their dishes.
they had a warning on the menu and everything.
my friends and i ate there regularly and never had a reaction... but I do know people who wouldn't eat the dishes known to be high in MSG out of fear.
this girl sounds more like an idiot than a full-on racist to me. :)

My wife works the counter at a gym and this weekend a man walked up to the counter and asked her to change the music to something less niggerish, the only thing was that it was rock that was on. WTF?

I make remarks around friends all the time that are absolutely controversial... I usually watch it around people of different ethnicities and try to keep it tame, because I like to make people laugh but I don't like to be hurtful... this sounds kind of tame. Maybe she was just trying to be funny but her joke bombed.

Am i the only one who is offended by the word Caucasian when it's used by someone who is obviously not?
That may sound weird but i always feel insulted when someone says it.

I felt more uncomfortable when I was called "white boy". I got that a lot when I was living in DC.
When someone calls me Caucasian, I say that my ancestors didn't come from the Caucasus region of Europe.

It's such an alien sounding word i guess, i don't know.
This typically only happens with Spanish people, or Latinosssssssssssss.
Why can't they just say White? Is it a PC thing, like African American?

Well let's be honest, i would be scared if an African American lady or gentleman called me "white girl".
Those words aren't usually laced with gentleness.

I never understood why the PC term for black people is African American when so many are of Caribbean or some other descent.
It just seemed like a silly term... with the potential to make a person feel stupid when they are corrrrrrrected.
I like to call my white friends "people". Oddly enough, that's what I call my black friends too.

You could have said that Americans seem to love milk but it "must be an Oriental thing" that people in Asia have a bad reaction to it.
But I think her comment sounds innocent enough, just ignorant. Mainly because maruchan ramen's third ingredient is MSG.................. and everyone eats that shit
racist.

Different.
I wouldn't be surprised if the same people who are "allergic" to MSG are the same people who are "allergic" to wireless networks.
If you had an uncomfortable reaction to what the lady said, I'd say you were being way too sensitive.

The thing is - I like this person a lot... I even respect her intelligence and knowledge to a point where I'd hold back comment before hitting a few medical journals and finding out if she's just trying to ignore the socially acceptable bullshit to make a controversial yet biologically based statement of fact.
What bothered me was the later realization that a white male would never get away with a statement like that. We live in virtual reality. Ignorance has been programmed in as strength ... freedom as slavery and you better get on board or you're not making it to the next level of the game regardless of reality reality.
I really like people against censorship b/c it's an attempt to step out and try to choke out the programmer. (excuse the Matrix reference but that movie is dead on)
That said - I am comedy cancer and I too appreciate Sue Bender's reference.
