When I was in college, I stopped caring what my parents thought. I wanted them to stop asking, so I flat out started giving them honest answers. I will never forget the day my mother stopped asking questions (circa 1996):

I wonder how much of this is because of Ronnie's "recovery"- and the idea that he needs to take responsibility for his issues- gives him that point of view

saying "its a choice" would even way simplify that. If you think that alcoholism is a "choice" you still would need to agree that certain people are more biologically susceptible than others.

I can't understand how that works. What gives them the right to give peoples money away to shareholders whose private company made bad decisions.

It wasn't even contested by the public, I know they're acting like it's 100% necessary to save the economy from depression, but did it? Compared to the size of the GDP it's nothing. Wouldn't things have naturally recovered? It looks more like free money for corporate friends.

A lot of foreign money (Chinese, Japanese, Arab petro dollars, etc.) has gone into holding the debt of Fannie & Freddie under the assumption that there is an implicit (if not legal) government guarantee. Since the $ has been sliding and foreign holders of US Govt. bonds have been actually losing money (in their native currencies) holding them, a decision has apparently been made that we can't piss off our creditors by not paying them at all thereby endangering the current & future loans we'll be accepting from them to keep the REAL hard times at bay.
