Some geologist/seismologist allegedly predicted the world series earthquake based on a spike in lost cat/dog reports to a LA paper. I hear he is saying there will be another one there soon. I only heard this in passing so cannot speak for its veracity.

"What is it, boy? Fire? Earthquake? Hippies? Somehow, the animals are always the first to know."

A powerful earthquake hit Myanmar Thursday near its borders with China, Thailand and Laos, the U.S. Geological Survey said. (http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/03/24/myanmar.quake/index.html?hpt=T2)

The quake hit in eastern Myanmar, about 55 miles (89 km) north of Chiang Rai, Thailand, the survey reported.

It had a magnitude of 6.8, the survey said, revising the estimate down from an initial reading of 7.0.

It was a relatively shallow quake, which can be very destructive.

Tokyo (CNN) -- A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Thursday, triggering a tsunami warning for one prefecture.

Workers evacuated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant following the quake, the Tokyo Electric Power Co. said. Tokyo Electric said it has communication with the plant and the power is still on. There were no immediate reports of damage, it said.

The quake's epicenter was off the coast of Miyagi in northeastern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Public broadcaster NHK reported a tsunami warning for Miyagi prefecture, saying people in that area should evacuate away from the shore to a safe place.

NHK also reported a tsunami advisory for Iwate prefecture, saying a tsunami is expected to arrive in coastal regions there as well.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said based on all available data, "a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is not a tsunami threat to Hawaii."

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered 41 miles (66 kilomemeters) from Sendai -- one of the areas worst hit by last month's 9.0-magnitude quake -- and 73 miles (118 kilometers) from Fukushima, where a crisis has been under way at the nuclear plant since last month's tsunami.

The quake was centered 207 miles (333 kilometers) from Tokyo, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

It was 15.9 miles (25.6 kilometers) deep, the agency reported.

It took place shortly after 11:30 p.m. local time (10:30 a.m. ET).

I'm wondering about what the people were trying to pull up the hill, at the 5 minute mark (in the lower left corner of the frame). They almost got washed away trying to save whatever (or whoever) it was. Very scary shit!

As for the sound... I'm just glad I don't understand their language.

In my mind I assumed it was someone helping an elderly person or someone who was too scared to run.

The one person kept repeating the same phrase, so I wonder if it was along the lines of "oh my god". Not a fun listen.

When I was a teen, we had a family move in across the street who were from SoCal. The mother had never seen snow until the blizzard of '82. She acted like I was retarded for shoveling my driveway every hour or so while the snow was falling. She said, "It just seems silly to not wait until the snow stops falling". I enjoyed watching her try to shovel three+ feet of snow.

I work at an adult day care and we had to evacuate the building because the emergency exit door alarm was tripped due to the 'quake. A co-worker felt her chair move and I felt nothing.

For the record, it's very interesting watching how people react in a 'crisis'. The alarm sounded and another co-worker started screaming that we had to get out of the building and ran to the door. You know, not helping get elderly/developmentally challenged people out of the building.

Yeah, but we would do that anyway, quake or no quake. You big babies.

Umm, I'm not trying to start anything but wasn't it just a few weeks ago that Left Coasters were looking (unsuccessfully) for virgins to sacrifice because a highway had to be shut down for two days to be repaved?

OK, maybe I am trying to start something. :innocent:

When I was a teen, we had a family move in across the street who were from SoCal. The mother had never seen snow until the blizzard of '82. She acted like I was retarded for shoveling my driveway every hour or so while the snow was falling. She said, "It just seems silly to not wait until the snow stops falling". I enjoyed watching her try to shovel three+ feet of snow.

To be honest I do neither. I let that shit fall then pay the neighborhood teens like $30 to clear it out once its finished.

There's kids who come to my house when it snows and they want to shovel. I don't let them but I do see if they're dealing or if any of their friends are. You can never have too many contacts.

Oh Holy Mother of God!!!!!

in fairness, this list is kinda skewed. If you look at the locations, alot of them were one big earthquake and then all the aftershocks and ripple quakes in near by islands or whatever. Its not like there was that many different spots having seperate unrelated quakes

StanUpshaw

If there's one thing this stupid earth of ours knows how to do -- it's quake.

Snoogans
08-24-2011, 07:19 PM
also, it should be added that this is possibly good, depending on the nature of the quakes. For example, the one in Rado and the one in DC and im sure a bunch of others were just plain fault line quakes. Thats actually good if there is so many, cause its releasing tensions without doing MAJOR MAJOR damage. Most of the places have come out pretty ok, and it helps prevent major quakes in the future by stopping stress build up

the way it could be bad is if some of the places are very close to or made up of volcanoes. That could be a result, (and possibly in colorado too because of the yellow stone shit) of magma rising under the surface and causing it to rise and stress and causing faults to release. If thats the case, it means eruptions are coming.

There was a interesting thing about Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius i saw on either history or nat geo where they showed how the buildings were at a time underwater. The early early buildings. They were built on stone stilts so when the tides came in it wouldnt flood, and when the tide was out there was sand under, kinda like piers. Anyway, in the 5 years before Vesuvius, the level of the land underneath started to bulge with magma and the buildings ended up being as much as 12 feet above high tide in the weeks before it blew

alot of those were deep underground, which doesnt cause alot of damage, but shows possible volcano shit

it's also fairly common. i don't think there is any increase in quakes. if you printed this data for a different time period, you'd get similar results.

Exactly. The Peru 7.0 would never have been covered by CNN let alone be a front page article if we didn't just have one recently on east coast. Now its quake mania and every one will get reported until people get bored.
